Topology optimization is increasingly used to automate design processes and explore innovative geometries. This study extends this method to motor windings, focusing on coreless electrical machines that allow greater design freedom by eliminating restricti ...

This article presents the first closed-loop magnetic bearing and angular velocity experimental results of a reaction sphere actuator for satellite attitude control. The proposed reaction sphere is a permanent magnet spherical actuator whose rotor is suppor ...

The paper presents an optimization design of an in-wheel BLDC motor for a kick scooter. The optimization is performed using a genetic optimization tool combined with a FEM commercial software. The new contributions of the paper are: (i) introduction of three operating modes for which the motor is optimized with a reduced number of FEM simulations and (ii) new approach to simultaneously maximize the energetic efficiency, minimize the cogging and respect the thermal constraint.

This publication presents the characterization of self discharging Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) in order to give place to low duty cycle applications, during which a DEA must remain actuated for long periods of time. DEAs typically present a low c ...

Soft Magnetic Composites (SMCs) possess promising electromagnetic characteristics and attract intense research and application interest in the engineering community. Fabrication of composites with customized architecture is feasible due to the recent advan ...

In modern robots and industrial machine tools, acceleration times begin to prevail over cruising times. This paper demonstrates the important relations between acceleration shape and the various characteristics of a drive system. These characteristics are mainly power dissipation, speed and mechanical lifetime. An electrical model gives an easy and direct way to analyse various systems

This paper describes a new method to estimate the standstill position of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM). The method is based on the anisotropic properties of permanent magnets and is therefore referred to as Magnetic Anisotropy Method (MAM). The MAM method differs significantly from all standard standstill position detection methods previously presented in the literature. The proposed method is totally independent of saliency and saturation effects and can therefore be used in many types of PMSM

Traveling wave generation in a ring type stator has been studied. The basic working principle to create traveling wave has been modelled by the superposition of two orthogonal standing waves. Theoretical analysis shows that the length to radius ratio affec ...

In this paper, the case of a battery charger for electric vehicles based on a wireless power transmission is addressed. The specificity of every stage of the overall system is presented. Based on calculated and measured results, relevant capacitive compens ...

In some applications, it is interesting to know the position of a BLDC Motor at standstill. This paper propose one solution using the saturation property of the motor. Principle, simulation and measures are presented. The results of industrial applications are exposed and discussed. Several preview works has been done on this subject. The purpose of this paper is to present a new method allowing to enhance the precision up to 2°. Furthermore, the method can be applied to all type of brushless DC motors,

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators (DEAs) require ultra high voltages in the order of several kilo volts to operate. To supply such voltages, a DC-DC flyback converter topology was selected. One of the main advantage of using such a structure is the possibilit ...

The control strategy to discharge a capacitive load such as a dielectric elastomer actuator charged to several kilo-volts is critical to obtain a safe and reliable actuation. In the case of this publication, an ultra-high voltage bidirectional flyback conv ...

Designing actuators or motors requires analysis of a lot of parameters such as length, temperature, efficiency, and weight. A global analysis to evaluate these parameters is possible. Three methods can be used: 1) an analytical method, allowing parametric study and parameter sensitivity analysis; 2) a finite-element model, which makes it possible to take into account nonlinearities, including the fringe effect; and 3) the analytical method, followed by a process of optimization, which makes it possible to r

The ironless inductive position sensor is a linear position sensing structure, which exhibits intrinsic immunity to external magnetic fields since it is characterized by air-cored windings. This new solution may be of major interest for applications where ...

This paper describes an analytical model developed to simulate and optimize an ultrasonic transducer to be used for spinal tissue ablation. Necessary elements for the construction of the transducer are described and then combined in a complete transducer model. Simulation and Optimization results for the separate elements, and the transducer as a whole are presented. © 2006 IEEE.

Ultrasonic motors (UMs) have emerged as a leading solution for actuators in biomedical equipment, aerospace applications, and other fields, owing to their distinct advantages, such as compact structures and self-locking ability. The operating principle of ...

Electromechanical implantable device for actuating a patient's eyelid (11), comprising an actuator (2) for activating the opening or closing of the eyelid. the actuator is a dielectric elastomer actuator. the device may comprise a rod (3). the actuator is intended to be implanted under the skin of the patient's forehead, and linked to the eyelid via said rod.

The paper presents a detailed analysis and comparison of two types of non-axial windings used for slotless permanent magnet (PM) motors: zigzag and rhombic ones. The motor mathematical model is verified by 3D FEM software. Finally, the motor prototype is presented.

Electroactive polymers show promising characteristic such as lightness, compactness, flexibility and large displacements making them a candidate for application in cardiac assist devices. This revives the need for quasi- square wave voltage supply switchin ...

Inductive Coupled Power Transfer (ICPT) is a widely used technique to transfer electrical power from a power supply to one or more load(s) without any physical link. Even with large airgaps between primary and secondary coils, a very high power transfer ef ...
