in finite sample studies redescending M-estimators outperform bounded M-estimators (see for example, Andrews et al. [1972. Robust Estimates of Location. Princeton University Press, Princeton]). Even though redescenders arise naturally out of the maximum li ...

Most researchers want evidence for the direction of an effect, not evidence against a point null hypothesis. Such evidence is ideally on a scale that is easily in- terpretable, with an accompanying standard error. Further, the evidence from iden- tical experiments should be repeatable, and evidence from independent experiments should be easily combined, such as required in meta-analysis. Such a measure of evidence exists and has been shown to be closely related to the Kullback-Leibler symmetrized distance b

Multistage carcinogenesis models describe the evolution of the cells in an individual's organ from a normal stage to a pre-neoplastic stage to a neoplastic stage. The triggers for the passage from one stage to the next one are presumed to be genetic alterations, which are not only governed by purely random events but also by individual environmental and genetic factors. We generalize existing models of carcinogenesis to populations composed of heterogeneous individuals, thus taking the environmental and gen

The functions of many eukaryotic genes are still poorly understood. Here, we developed and validated a new method, termed GeneBridge, which is based on two linked approaches to impute gene function and bridge genes with biological processes. First, Gene-Mo ...

Robust statistics has multiple goals, which are not always aligned. Robust thinking grew out of data analysis and the realisation that empirical evidence is at times supported merely by one or a few observations. The paper examines the outgrowth from this ...

An important question in neuroscience is to reveal the relationship between individual performance and brain activity. This could be achieved by applying model regression techniques, in which functional connectivity derived from resting-state functional ma ...

When many (m) null hypotheses are tested with a single dataset, the control of the number of false rejections is often the principal consideration. Two popular controlling rates are the probability of making at least one false discovery (FWER) and the expected fraction of false discoveries among all rejections (FDR). Scaled multiple comparison error rates form a new family that bridges the gap between these two extremes. For example, the Scaled Expected Value (SEV) limits the number of false positives relat

Given the large number of papers written over the last ten years on error controls in high dimensional multiple testing, it would be worthwhile to consider a single comprehensive technique that allows user flexibility in error control when dealing with big ...

The authors achieve robust estimation of parametric models through the use of weighted maximum likelihood techniques. A new estimator is proposed and its good properties illustrated through examples. Ease of implementation is an attractive property of the new estimator. The new estimator downweights with respect to the model and can be used for complicated likelihoods such as those involved in bivariate extreme value problems. New weight functions, tailored for these problems, are constructed. The increased

A hypothesis is an unverified assumption about a phenomenon, formulated and judged to be plausible by knowledgeable persons. Studies involving carefully planned and executed experiments play a leading role in the verification process. The methods used in the analysis of the data generated in such studies have been developed by statisticians and significance tests are a part of this branch of statistics. The idea at the core of this type of tests has a lot of appeal among experimental scientists, but has aro

On the basis of the Neyman-Scott process a model is proposed to generate rainfall at two sites simultaneously. This model takes into account the correlation, which is produced by generating bivariate correlated variates. The cross correlation between the sites has been computed in order to estimate the parameters. Finally, the model is validated for three pairs of stations situated in the Swiss Plateau region.

This paper presents a method for detecting and nominating outliers based on the multihalver, or the delete-half jackknife. Since considering all possible half-samples is unpractical and unfeasable even for a moderate sample size, we present an algorithm for choosing a good set of half-samples. We also present an outlier detection method based on this algorithm. Simulations are given to show the effectiveness of our method and an example is also presented. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. Context.Gaia's readout window strategy is challenged by very dense fields in the sky. Therefore, in addition to standard Gaia observations, full Sky Mapper (SM) images were recorded for nine selected regions in the sky. A new software pipeline exploits the ...

That the conclusion based on a data analysis be robust and stable is not merely a desirable feature, it is essential. To merit this quality label, a conclusion must be supported by strong data-based evidence and not simply be a discovery gleaned from a pre ...

Some equivalence tests are based on two one-sided tests, where in many applications the test statistics are approximately normal. We define and find evidence for equivalence in Z-tests and then one-and two-sample binomial tests as well as for t-tests. Mult ...

A weight of evidence is a calibrated statistic whose values in [0, 1] indicate the degree of agreement between the data and either of two hypothesis, one being treated as the null (H 0) and the other as the alternative (H 1). A value of zero means perfect ...

In multiple testing, a variety of control metrics have been introduced such as the family-wise error rate (FWER), the False Discovery Rate (FDR), False Exceedence Rate (FER), etc. We found a way to embed these metrics into a continuous family of control me ...
