On the one hand, it has been observed that liquefaction- induced shear deformation of soils accumulates in a cycle- by-cycle pattern. On the other hand, it is known that heating could induce plastic hardening. This study deals with the constitutive modelli ...

The presented experimental study focuses on the hydro-mechanical characterisation of a shale caprock (Opalinus Clay) in contact with carbon dioxide. The objective of this paper, consists in the evaluation of the material's sealing capacity in terms of entr ...

Elastic properties of gas shales are fundamental for the geomechanical characterization of unconventional reservoirs. Due to the presence of microcracks, a non-linear elastic behaviour with hysteresis is usually exhibited when gas shales are subjected to u ...

Currently, the suitability of centrifuge testing for capturing the thermal-induced mechanical behavior of full-scale energy piles has not been established, yet, despite their increasing worldwide development. Looking at this challenge, this paper investiga ...

Opalinus Clay shale is under consideration to serve as the host geomaterial for the underground storage of nuclear waste in Switzerland. Water retention behaviour and anisotropic behaviour represent two main features of this geomaterial; however, a compreh ...

The Opalinus Clay shale is the selected geological formation for the construction of a deep geological repository in Switzerland. The geomaterial will experience cyclic drying and wetting paths during different stages of the repository lifetime. The shale, ...

First experimental results on Opalinus Clay from shallow depth (< 30 m depth) are presented and compared to results on cores from Mont Terri Underground Rock Laboratory (~ 300 m depth). Samples were tested in one dimensional condition using an advanced exp ...

This study proposes an analysis of the multiphysical phenomena and mechanisms governing the thermo-mechanical behaviour of energy piles. The analysis is based on the results of a series of full-scale in-situ tests, laboratory experiments and numerical anal ...

The paper presents an experimental and modelling approach for the soil water retention behaviour of two deformable soils. The objective is to investigate the physical mechanisms that govern the soil water retention properties and to propose a constitutive ...

The aim of this paper is numerical analysis of the consolidation processes in soils due to high temperature. A fully coupled finite element model for non-isothermal elasto-plastic multiphase materials at high temperature is therefore developed in the frame ...

The field of soil bio-improvement, through microbial-induced calcite mineralization, has gained significant momentum in scientific literature in the past years. The phenomenon, which is inspired from natural environments, has been extensively applied at la ...

The paper presents a collaborative piece of research undertaken by seven research teams from different universities within the ‘Mechanics of Unsaturated Soils for Engineering’ (MUSE) network. The objective is to benchmark different approaches to constituti ...

This chapter deals with the effects of water on the mechanical behaviour of pavements. The analysis is based on constitutive considerations. Constitutive models devoted to both routine and advanced pavement analysis and design are introduced and both the resilient behaviour as well as the long term elasto-plastic approaches are presented. As soon as the approach considers the material as a two phase (solid matrix and a fluid), the introduction of the effective stress concept is required. In the last section

In a few years, safe and definitive solutions should be ready to manage large quantities of high-level radioactive waste. Deep geological repository involving a multibarrier system constitutes one of the most promising options to isolate such waste from th ...

Over the past two decades, a substantial amount of research has investigated the effects of thermal loads associated with the geothermal operation of energy piles on their mechanical response. Based on this research, consensus about the need for considerin ...

The use of concrete geostructures for energy extraction and storage in the ground is an environmentally friendly and easy way of cooling and heating buildings. With such energy geostructures, it is possible to transfer energy from the ground to buildings b ...

Displacement measurement device (1) for borehole in situ stress measurement comprising a displacement sensor (11) including one or more measurement probes (12) a housing, and electronics (17) mounted in the housing and connected to the one or more measurement probes. the housing is an annular housing (10) comprising an outer radial wall (13a) and an inner radial wall (13b), the inner radial wall surrounding a central passage configured to allow a coring tool (4) and a pressure tool (2) to pass therethrough,

This paper introduces the Enhanced Anisotropic Damage Plasticity (eADP) model, a novel engineering constitutive approach tailored for tunnel analyses in Opalinus Clay – the designated host rock for the Swiss radioactive waste repository. The model's key in ...

A deep geological repository involving a multi-barrier system constitutes one of the most promising options to isolate high-level radioactive waste from the human environment. In order to certify the efficiency of waste isolation, it is essential to unders ...

The paper presents a benchmarking study carried out within the ‘Mechanics of Unsaturated Soils for Engineering’ (MUSE) network aimed at comparing different techniques for measurement and control of suction. Techniques tested by the eight ‘Mechanics of Unsa ...
