A constitutive model that couples elastic-plastic and damage theories is developed to predict the mechanical behavior of a shale from the Mont Terri rock laboratory (Opalinus Clay). The framework of continuum damage mechanics allows to predict the degradat ...

The water retention mechanisms play a major role in either fluid trapping due to the capillary forces present in low permeability formations, as in the case of shale gas reservoir, or in the resaturation of shale formations after ventilation, as in the case of deep geological repositories. Moreover, the permeability and the swelling/shrinkage behaviour of shale are related to suction, or the degree of saturation variations. The poster presents experimental techniques and results related to the analysis of t

Slow movements of natural slopes are quite frequent in mountainous or hilly areas. They may display occasional crises, mostly related to the increase of pore water pressures induced by exceptional climatic conditions. A methodology consisting of combining the hydrogeological analysis and the geomechanical analysis is presented for the analysis of these phenomena. The evolution in space and time of pore water pressures obtained from hydrogeological modelling is used as input data for finite elements geomecha

A large exploration campaign was executed for the final phase of the Swiss site selection program for a deep geological repository of radioactive waste. Nine boreholes were drilled, penetrating the 100 to 120 m thick Opalinus Clay shale host rock at depths ...

This paper presents a comprehensive methodology for analysing the compression and consolidation behaviour of shales. An apparatus was designed to perform oedometric high-pressure tests by applying a maximum vertical total stress of 100 MPa and simultaneous ...

Cracking is a most unwanted development in soil structures undergoing periodic drying. Desiccation cracking arises in the apparent absence of external forces. Hence, either an internal, self equilibrated stress pattern resulting from kinematic incompatibil ...

The behavior of a pile subjected to thermo-mechanical loadings was studied in situ with the aim of quantifying the thermal influence on the bearing capacity of heat exchanger piles. A pile situated in a building under construction was equipped with a chann ...

This paper presents a unified thermo-mechanical experimental study on a remoulded unsaturated sandy silt and brings a contribution to the understanding of the fundamental mechanics of unsaturated soils in non- isothermal conditions. The experimental progra ...

The buffer-rock barriers system is widely proved to be one of the most promising options for isolating high-level radioactive waste from the human environment. To certify the efficiency and provide the additional development regarding design and assessment ...

Thermal effects are an important component in the analysis of geologic carbon storage because the injected CO2 reaches the storage formation at a lower temperature than that of the reservoir rock. The main fear is related to the possibility that the shear ...

An effective stress concept for active clays is formulated to improve the modelling of these materials under a variety of environmental conditions. In particular, the mechanical effects induced by a change in the chemical potential of pore water associated ...

There is a need to reduce the economic cost of the energy geostructures and increase the efficiency of such systems, which will also rationalise the environmental impact.

Shales are among the most commonly considered geomaterials in current energy-related geomechanical investigations, as they are involved in engineering applications such as the unconventional extraction of natural gas, CO2 sequestration and nuclear waste ge ...

This paper presents a three-dimensional elastic viscoplastic model that can describe the time-dependent behaviors of soft clays. The constitutive model is formulated based on the nonstationary flow surface theory and incorporates new developments, includin ...

The design of energy pile is hampered by the complex interaction between the piles and the slab subjected to thermal loads. Although finite element analysis is used to account explicitly for the interactions, this method is mainly considered as a research ...

The analysis of the volumetric behavior and the consolidation of shales require the involved materials to be tested under high confining stresses. The paper presents the apparatuses and the techniques that have been developed recently for testing shales un ...

The operation of energy pile in summer can expel excessive heat of the buildings into the ground by the use of a heat pump. Despite of having been implemented for decades, the design of energy pile still relies heavily on empiricism as there is still limit ...

This paper addresses an advanced and unified thermo-mechanical constitutive model for cohesive soils. Based on experimental evidence showing the non-linear and irreversible thermo-mechanical responses of saturated soils, the constitutive equations of the d ...

This paper aims to identify and quantitatively evaluate various critical mechanisms associated with the processes of desiccation shrinkage and cracking in drying silty soils. A previously developed 1D bundle-of-tubes model is refined to simulate the variou ...
