This study focuses on the derivation of a semi-analytical approach for the evaluation of surface uplift and caprock deflection induced by underground injection of CO2. The adopted methodology includes the development of a mathematical model that incorporat ...

The potential of underground CO2 storage relies on the sealing efficiency of an overlaying caprock that acts as a geological barrier. Shales are considered as potential caprock formations thanks to their favourable hydro-mechanical properties. In this work ...

The involvement of shales in engineering fields such as the extraction of shale gas or the nuclear waste geological disposal is mainly driven by the low permeability and the high retention properties of these geomaterials. The high capillary forces develop ...

To date, no field data referring to various operating energy piles over time-scales of practical applications had been made available to investigate the thermally induced “group action”. This paper presents the results of a full-scale field test and a thre ...

Shales are among the most considered geomaterials in current energy-related geomechanical investigations; they are involved in engineering applications such as the unconventional extraction of natural gas, CO2 sequestration and nuclear waste geological sto ...

Besides the so-called conventional features of behaviour of unsaturated soils, in-situ analyses evidence complex constraining and confining conditions for media submitted to wetting drying cycles. In an effort to simulate the hydro-mechanical coupling effe ...

The testing procedure and results on saturated samples of Opalinus Clay in the work of Schuster et al. (Rock Mech Rock Eng https://doi.org/10.1007/ s00603-021-02474-3, 2021) were conducted and presented using strain rates two to four orders of magnitudes h ...

Natural soils and rocks are usually structured at various levels starting from the scale of the particles, pores and their networks up to the field scale. The particular structure in these materials, as often represented by the combination of fabric and bo ...

This paper aims at characterization of thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of MX-80 granular bentonite obtained from an innovative double-cell triaxial system. The system has been mainly developed to perform suction controlled tests on unsaturated geomateria ...

Desiccation cracking of soils is of great importance to geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering as it affects the soil physical integrity. Yet the mechanisms of drying cracking in soils, and the ways to control or avoid it, are still elusive. This pa ...

This study investigates the effect of non-linear soil deformation on the displacement interaction among energy piles. The work is based on interaction factor analyses of full-scale pile group tests, whose results are compared with experimental evidence. Th ...

Retaining structures often interact with soils in unsaturated conditions and their performance is influenced by environmental actions. Currently, geotechnical analysis and design approaches mainly consider the soils either totally dry or totally saturated. ...

This study investigates the effect of reinforced concrete cracking on the performance of thermo-active piles subjected to traction force. A newly developed finite element code that is within the framework of the load-transfer approach is employed to simula ...

Experimental evidence shows that the chemical composition of the liquid inside the pores and its variation over time can have significant implications on the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of clayey geomaterials. The magnitude of these implications depe ...

The hydro-mechanical behaviour of shales is becoming one of the most important issues in modern geomechanics, largely driven by petroleum industries (i.e., the extraction of shale gas), the sequestration of CO2 and the nuclear waste geological storage. In ...

In unsaturated soil mechanics testing, total volume change of the specimen is related to both water and air volume changes and cannot be measured with the same techniques as in conventional saturated soil mechanics. Over the years, several methods have bee ...
