Single-use aluminum foil-based laser desorption/ionization (LDI) target plates have been developed for mass spectrometry (MS) analysis and provide detection results comparable to those of commercial stainless steel plates while offering a convenient way to ...

Oral cancer poses a serious threat worldwide owing to its soaring case-fatality rate and its metastatic characteristics of spreading to the other parts of the body. Despite the recent breakthroughs in biomedical sciences, the detection of oral cancer at an ...

Here we present the detection of ultralow concentrations of biomolecules in a device made from a polycarbonate membrane containing a network of gold nanowires and using a “contactless” impedance tomoscopy technique. The sensor comprises a thin dielectric l ...

The surface plasmon enhanced hyper-Rayleigh scattering light collected from an aqueous solution of gold nanorods is reported. A non negligible part of the signal is attributed to a photoluminescence background attributed to the electron–hole recombination following multiphoton excitation of d-valence band electrons into the sp-conduction band. This radiative relaxation process is likely favored by the presence of the organic species adsorbed at the surface of the nanorods. The absolute value for the hyperpo

Bacterial typing is of great importance in clinical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, food safety analysis, and biological research. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) is now widely used to analyze bacterial samples ...

The search for highly active earth-abundant elements and nonexpensive catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction is a vital and demanding task to minimize energy consumption. Transition metals incorporated into molybdenum sulfides are promising candidates f ...

The nonlinear optical properties of coumarin 343 (C343) dye-attached TiO2 nanoparticles in the size range 5-8 nm adsorbed at the interface of water/1,2-dichloroethane have been studied by using the surface second harmonic generation technique. No second ha ...

Bloodstream infections rank among the most serious causes of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients, partly due to the long period (up to one week) required for clinical diagnosis. In this work, we have developed a sensitive method to quickly and ...

We perform in this paper a kinetic study of the photoelectrochemical responses of nanoporous thin photoactive films. The films were fabricated by by a layer-by-layer assembly of positively charged polyelectrolytes (poly-L- Lysine, pLys) and negatively char ...

Gas bubble accumulation limits mass transport in porous electrodes during alkaline water electrolysis at high current densities. Herein, synchrotron-based operando micro-CT and microstructure-resolved lattice Boltzmann method simulations are employed to unveil how porosity and geometric structure govern hydrogen bubble detachment and two-phase transport in alkaline water electrolysis. It is found that porous electrodes with a rationally designed ordered pore architecture enable efficient mass transport by m

The coupling between open channel-based microchip electrophoresis and mass spectrometry via electrostatic spray ionization is proposed for in situ detection of fractionated analytes. Electrophoretic separation is performed in an open channel fabricated in ...

Electrostatic spray ionization (ESTASI) mass spectrometry imaging (MSI), recently developed to profile spatial distribution of chemical and biochemical molecules on an insulating surface under ambient conditions, has been applied to identify and quantify c ...

Multi-layer inkjet printing is applied to prepare microchips that consist of up to eight three-electrode sensors comprising a carbon nanotube (CNT) working electrode, a silver/silver chloride quasireference electrode and a CNT counter electrode. Optionally, the sensors contain micro-wells to measure sample volumes as small as 50 μL. The implementation of inkjet printing allows the flexible design and highly reproducible fabrication of batches of various electrode shapes and dimensions. The usage of CNTs as

Fluoroquinolones are a group of synthetic antibiotics with a broad activity spectrum against mycoplasma, gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Due to the extensive use of fluoroquinolones in farming and veterinary science, there is a constant need in t ...

The capacitance of monolayer-protected gold nanoclusters (MPCs), CMPC, in solution has been theoretically reconsidered from an electrostatic viewpoint, in which an MPC is considered as an isolated charged sphere within two dielectric layers, the intrinsic ...

Capacitance measurements of a polarised liquid|liquid interface show that the capacitance of the interface increases in the presence of an adsorbed monolayer of citrate-coated gold nanoparticles. This unusual observation can be explained by an increase of ...

The self-assembly of the oppositely charged watersoluble porphyrins, cobalt tetramethylpyridinium porphyrin (CoTMPyP4+) and cobalt tetrasulphonatophenyl porphyrin (CoTPPS4−), at the interface with an organic solvent to form molecular “rafts”, provides an excellent catalyst to perform the interfacial four-electron reduction of oxygen by lipophilic electron donors such as tetrathiafulvalene (TTF). The catalytic activity and selectivity of the self-assembled catalyst toward the four-electron pathway was found

This work introduces trifluorotoluene as an alternative organic solvent for studying charge transfer across liquid vertical bar liquid interfaces. In comparison with the most popular organic solvents in this field, 1,2-dichloroethane and nitrobenzene, trif ...

Oxygen reduction catalyzed by cobalt(II) (2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octaethylporphyrin) [Co(OEP)] at soft interfaces is studied by voltammetry and biphasic reactions. When Co(OEP) is present in a solution of 1,2-dichloroethane in contact with an aqueous acidic s ...

A miniaturized polymer electrospray-type interface is used to study metal-ion chelation with model peptides. Taking advantage of the intrinsic electrochemical behavior of electrospray, a sacrificial electrode is used to generate at the same time electrospr ...
