The Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, is deploying a flexible learning scheme for selected pilot courses in engineering education. In such a scheme, traditional lectures and written exercises are combined with addition ...

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing traumatic events, such as death, serious injury, or threats to oneself or others. Affecting 5–10 % of the population, PTSD is often underreported due t ...

The use of interactive tools combined with remote laboratories has shown to be very useful for students when offered in a MOOC. The EPFL hands-on Control MOOC enables students to switch back and forth between control and observation on a remote laboratory, ...

Due to the huge exposure of personal information in social media, a challenge now is to design effective privacy mechanisms that protect against unauthorized access to social data. In this paper, a trust model for social media is first presented. Based on ...

In the Go-Lab European project, we are investigating an online lab portal that enables students to perform personalized scientific experiments with online labs. To protect sensitive student data, such as user activity data and learning preferences, this pa ...

Deploying remote laboratories at a large scale is the next challenge in remote experimentation. It is referred as Massive Open Online Labs (MOOLs). Being able to sustain a massive number of users accessing a specific resource concurrently is a complex task ...

The widespread use of bots to support software development makes social coding platforms such as GitHub a particularly rich source of data for the study of human-bot interaction. Software development bots are used to automate repetitive tasks, interacting ...

eLogbook is a new Web 2.0 social software framework developed in the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland) to provide collaborative Web services in an open academic environment for higher education. Several cross platform We ...

With the wide availability of mobile devices and the growing interest in social media, numerous applications have emerged to support student engagement in the classroom. There is conflicting evidence, however, on whether the engagement benefits of such app ...

The aim of the workshop is to foster a synergetic collaboration between engineers/industry professionals and educators, teachers and students, with goal to address STEM education gaps related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Engineers and scienc ...

Go-Lab is an European project devoted to promote STEM education by means of pedagogical guidelines based on blended Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL), authoring tools for rich open educational resources, and online labs. In such a framework, we have analysed the orchestration needs of expert teachers in inquiry learning and STEM, and provided a set of Learning Analytics (LA) apps to address them. This document reports on three LA apps -Online Users, Student Time Spent, and Submitted Reports- which, based on the

Student participation in class is an important aspect of the learning experience, and can provide valuable feedback for teachers. However, getting students to interact in large classrooms is challenging. This paper presents SpeakUp, a mobile temporary soci ...

Over the past decade, the use of chatbots for educational purposes has gained considerable traction. A similar trend has been observed in social coding platforms, where automated agents support software developers with tasks such as performing code reviews ...

This contribution presents a remote laboratory project with a new business model that aims at bringing physical experimentation back into the learning arena, where remotely operable laboratory experiments used in advanced education and training schemes are made available to a global market. This is done via the Internet using a set of e-commerce and advanced information and communication technology solutions. The project will add online remote experimentation to distance learning techniques. This creates ne

The concept of an ePortfolio was introduced in 1999 as an electronic learning record and further developed to overcome the limitation of learning management systems lacking persistent storage for learning artifacts. Nowadays, educational platforms have evo ...

Improving face-to-face (f2f) interaction in large classrooms is a challenging task as student participation can be hard to initiate. Thanks to the wide adoption of personal mobile devices, it is possible to blend digital and face-to-face interaction and in ...

Augmented Reality enhances the user perception by overlaying real world information with computer-generated information. In this paper, we study the user experience in Augmented Reality for the deployment of real-time adaptation. In the context of thin-cli ...

The European Go-Lab project offers Inquiry Learning Spaces (ILSs) as open educational resources to support Inquiry-based Learning (IBL). To successfully exploit ILSs and implement IBL, proper support for orchestration is needed. Researchers have highlighte ...

Although a plethora of Web 2.0 applications exist today, there is little literature reporting on experiences, concrete recommendations or best practices when developing such applications. The scarcity of such records makes it difficult for developers to de ...

In this paper we introduce a new decentralized navigation function for coordination of autonomous vehicles at intersections. The main contribution is a navigation function designed for vehicles with predefined paths that uses expected time to intersection for collision avoidance. In such way, deadlock situations are avoided. Different inertias of the vehicles are taken into account to enable on-board energy optimization for crossing. Heavier vehicles that need more energy and time for acceleration or brakin
