In this paper, an analytical noise calculation is presented to derive the impact of process and design parameters on 1/f and thermal noise for a low-noise CMOS image sensor (CIS) readout chain. It is shown that dramatic noise reduction is obtained by using ...

The Gm/ID approach has proven to be an efficient technique for the design of low-power analog circuits. Until now it was mostly demonstrated on older CMOS technology nodes. In this paper we will show that the Gm/ID methodology still holds for advanced tech ...

This paper presents a fast and accurate way to design and optimize LC oscillators using the inversion coefficient (IC). This methodology consists of four steps: linear analysis, nonlinear analysis, phase noise analysis, and optimization using a figure of m ...

We compare the noise performance of two optimized readout chains that are based on 4T pixels and featuring the same bandwidth of 265kHz (enough to read 1Megapixel with 50frame/s). Both chains contain a 4T pixel, a column amplifier and a single slope analog ...

In this paper, a solution to realize local oscillators (LO) for a low power super-heterodyne receiver is presented. The first oscillator uses a bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonator with high Q-factor. A quasi- harmonic quadrature relaxation oscillator with l ...

This paper establishes the close relation that exists between the Fano noise suppression factor F and the Gm/ID FoM showing that F is proportional to the product of the thermal noise excess factor γn and the normalized Gm/ID function. Taking advantage of t ...

This paper highlights some of the challenges faced for the modeling of MOSFET devices for operation at cryogenic temperature (CT). A special focus is given on the modeling of the threshold voltage V-T and the subthreshold swing SS. The significant increase ...

The current trend towards embedding more and more light sensors in portable and wearable devices is calling for higher integration and reuse of the sensor interface electronics. In many applications, the light needs to be generated locally, which becomes t ...

After decades of research on non-invasive glucose monitoring, invasive devices based on finger blood sampling are still the predominant reference for diabetic patients for accurately measuring blood glucose levels. Meanwhile, research continues improving p ...

This work presents a new method for kTC noise calculation in periodic witched capacitor circuits. Two basic applications are overviewed. Namely the switched capacitor low-pass filter and the N-path band-pass filter. Analytical noise calculation using the new method is performed for both examples. The obtained analytical results are confirmed with SpectreRF Pnoise analysis and ELDO transient noise simulations.

In all-wireless networks, minimizing energy consumption is crucial as in most cases the nodes are battery-operated. We focus on the problem of power-optimal broadcast, for which it is well known that the broadcast nature of radio transmissions can be explo ...

The PLL based frequency synthesizer has been the main impediment to achieve a low energy dissipation in the radios employed in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN); in spite of duty cycling. This is due to the crystal oscillator reference in the frequency synthesizer which dissipates significant energy during its long wakeup phase. To address this issue and thereby obtain the full advantage proffered by duty cycling, an overview of FBAR based synthesizers which can wake up in just 5 μs is presented. In addition,

This paper suggests several approaches for determining the transient stability of a power network by using an analog VLSI chip for simulating the system behavior. The main advantages of using this method are the much shorter computation time and lower complexity compared to the existing methods that are based on numerical calculations or discrete analog emulators

In this paper, a comprehensive charge-based predictive model of interface and oxide trapped charges in undoped symmetric long-channel double-gate MOSFETs is developed. The model involves essentially no fitting parameters, but first-principle calculations o ...

The complexity of radiofrequency circuit design comes from the large number of parameters to be adjusted. Constant node shrink in CMOS process and variation of technology skills significantly contribute to this complexity. The paper reports on a reliable a ...

This paper presents the design of a 60GHz Quadrature Digitally-Controlled Oscillator for a low-power Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave radar System-on-Chip. The accurate detection of vital signs requires 1 and Q demodulation of the received signal. The q ...

Using the Y-function method, this paper experimentally investigates the effects of total ionizing dose up to 1 Grad on the channel mobility of a commercial 28-nm bulk CMOS process. ...

This paper presents the two main circuit techniques, namely autozeroing (AZ) and chopper stabilization (CS), that are used to reduce the 1/f noise and offset in amplifiers typically used in sensor electronics interfaces. After recalling their main properti ...

This paper characterizes and models the effects of total ionizing dose (TID) up to 1 Grad(SiO2) on the drain leakage current of nMOSFETs fabricated with a commercial 28-nm bulk CMOS process. Experimental comparisons among individual nMOSFETs of various siz ...
