In this paper, we propose a distributionally robust chance constrained (DRCC) optimization problem for the operation of an active distribution network (ADN). The ADN's operator uses the proposed problem to centrally optimize the dispatch plan of his resour ...

Physics-based models of electrochemical cells are of great interest for the future battery management systems (BMSs), due to their accuracy and capability to predict cell physical states. One of their main disadvantages, when compared to equivalent circuit ...

With a continuously growing share of non-dispatchable renewable energy sources in the power mix, flexibility in hydropower provision is becoming fundamental. The major role played by hydropower in frequency regulation in the last years has underlined the p ...

Frequency response and voltage support are vital ancillary services for power grids. In this paper, we design and experimentally validate a real-time control framework for battery energy storage systems (BESSs) to provide ancillary services to power grids. ...

This paper introduces a microelectronic emulation approach for high-speed power system computation. First, the problems of existing power system simulators are detailed. This shows that microelectronic emulation is a possible solution for the speed problem ...

Accurate models capable to predict the dynamic behavior and the State-of-Charge (SoC) of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) is a key aspect for the definition of model-based controls in electric vehicles and in power grid applications of these energy s ...

This paper proposes a scalable stochastic optimization model and a Markov chain-based scenario generation method to benefit from an active distribution network's (ADN's) flexibility. The optimization variables are the dispatch plan, such as the active and ...

The power flexibility of the proliferating distributed energy resources located in distribution networks could be aggregated and provided to the transmission system. Considering the lack of a framework to help transmission system operator (TSO) to benefit ...

The paper presents a network partitioning strategy for the optimal voltage control of Active Distribution Networks (ADNs) actuated by means of a limited number of Distributed Energy Storage Systems (DESSs). The proposed partitioning uses a linear programmi ...

This paper proposes a methodology to optimize the dispatch and reserve between multiple units in a Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) that makes use of the Hydraulic Short Circuit (HSC) operating mode. HSC allows for the simultaneous generation and pumping fr ...

Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) will have an important role in the optimal operation of Active Distribution Networks (ADNs). Within this context, this paper focuses on the problem of ESSs optimal siting and sizing. Following similar approaches already propos ...

In this work an extension of the well-known DC power flow method is presented. A normal DC power flow of the system is executed to determine voltage angles and a novel derivation of voltage amplitudes is devised. The latter is rigorously formulated and eig ...

Energy storage systems can improve the performance of home energy management systems and also provide ancillary services in electricity markets. However, the economic and technical insufficiency of individual home storage units, makes employing them ineffi ...

This paper presents a distributed shadow dynamic consensus (DSDC) framework to address the generation company (GENCO) strategic bidding problem in the independent system operator (ISO) operation. First, each sub-group is defined according to the communicat ...

Energy balance and ancillary services provided by distributed storage systems to active distribution networks represent two aspects of a single problem that needs to be properly treated in view of the typical distribution networks parameters. In this conte ...

An application of fuzzy logic based control for power systems governing multiple flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) devices is described here. Sufficiently accurate relations have been derived to determine setpoints of FACTS devices u ...

In this paper, a blackout risk assessment method is proposed considering the effects of cascading outages, the active power and frequency response of the system. Here, the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) is used to analyze the risk of blackouts by generating ...

This paper deals with a DC-segmentation of interconnected power systems which represents a relatively new and interesting approach that could be a potential solution for mitigation of the cascading outages effects. The DC-segmentation is defined as the use of DC links to split large AC grids into sets of smaller asynchronously operated AC segments. By implementing grid segmentation, it should be plausible to improve the controllability of power flows, to limit the propagation of disturbances, to reduce the

This paper focuses on the problem of the probabilistic optimal day-ahead scheduling of energy resources in Active Distribution Networks (ADNs). These resources include both dispersed energy storage systems (DESSs) and volatile renewable embedded generators ...

Large horsepower induction motors play a critical role in the operation of industrial facilities. In this respect, the distribution network operators dedicate a high priority to the operational safety of these motor loads. In this paper, the induction moto ...
