There is a significant need to examine precisely the conditions of concrete road bridges because of the increasing traffic and axle loads and the fact that most existing bridges were not designed with respect to fatigue. In-situ investigations are challeng ...

Examining structural safety requires hypotheses on several properties of the bridge structure, such as material properties, boundary conditions, and self-weight. The traditional approach relies on conservative assumptions for each structural property, foll ...

Ultra-High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composite (UHPFRC) is becoming popular in designing lightweight and durable structures. UHPFRC structural elements remain crack-free and waterproof under service conditions, significantly improving durab ...

Two full-scale PC box girders with typical damage were derived from an in-situ bridge that was in service about 20 years, to understand the strengthening effects of prestressed CFRP plates for the entire bottom slab, casting of a RC layer in composite acti ...

An effective method to strengthen existing Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures is to add a thin layer of Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced cement-based Composite (UHPFRC), with or without steel rebars, over the concrete slab to create a composite ele ...

The historic Port Weir Bridge over the Nidau-Buren Canal in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, was inaugurated in 1938. This multi-purpose structure serves as an important road bridge, a mechanised weir, a lock for canal boats, as well as a hydroelectric pow ...

‘Structural UHPFRC’ stands for Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Composite material, that is, complemented by reinforcing steel bars forming a R-UHPFRC layer with the goal to enhance the resistance and durability of structural elements i ...

The use of Reinforced Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composite (R-UHPFRC) materials in the strengthening of existing infrastructure has been more broadly exploited in recent years, although the main domain of application pertains to t ...

The addition of an external layer of reinforced ultrahigh performance fiber-reinforced concrete (R-UHPFRC) on top of reinforced concrete (RC) floor slabs and bridge decks is an emerging technique for strengthening RC structures. As an additional reinforcem ...

Because of its high tensile strength and deformation capacity, UHPFRC (Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious composite) can theoretically be used without any reinforcement bars or prestressing. However, for more economical design and for rea ...

Reinforced concrete being the most applied construction material today performs very well in most applications but still lacks durability under severe environmental conditions. Especially existing structures built decades ago show degradation. Using Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) to improve durability is a promising option seen the extraordinary performance of this material when applied in a composite section. Restrained shrinkage of the overlay plays an important role in this typ

High Performance Cement-based composites such as some UHPFRC or SHCC exhibit a tensile strain hardening response associated to the progressive formation of finely distributed microcracks. Strain Hardening (SH) - UHPFRC with suitable fibrous mixes have a de ...

The effect of different curing temperatures (from 20 to 40 °C) on the compressive strength and hydration of Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) have been investigated between 3 and 28 days, using the loss on ignition test (LOI) and th ...

The tensile fatigue behaviour of ultra-high performance fibre reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) under constant amplitude fatigue cycles is presented. Three series of uniaxial tensile fatigue tests up to a maximum of 10 million cycles were conducted with the objective to determine the endurance limit of UHPFRC that was supposed to exist for this material. The fatigue tests reveal that an endurance limit exists in all three domains of UHPFRC tensile behaviour at S-ratios ranging from 0.70 to 0.45 with S being the

This paper presents experimental results on creep and relaxation of UHPFRC at early age (3–8 days), under low to high tensile stresses (1.2, 2.7, 5.4, and 8.1 MPa—estimated as 13, 30, 60, and 90% of the tensile strength, respectively) up to the strain hard ...

The key to extending the service life of a historical masonry bridge is an accurate examination of its actual performance. This paper presents a risk-based safety approach which introduces a risk matrix illustrating the risk presented by a structure as a f ...

Ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) can be implemented in combination with steel reinforcing bars to enhance the performance of UHPFRC elements subject to shear stresses. This paper presents an experimental investigation into the behavior of a UHPFRC web element in shear. Two I-shaped beams are constructed out of UHPFRC, with longitudinal reinforcing bars in the tension flange. One of the beams includes transverse bars in the web; the other contains no transverse bars. When loaded to f

A novel monitoring scheme oriented towards the structural examination of reinforced concrete slabs subject to railway traffic action is presented. Monitoring is based on the measurement of the mean axial strain profile variation in the cross-section of the ...

The addition of a thin overlay of reinforced UHPFRC (R-UHPFRC) to a reinforced concrete (RC) element creates a composite member which can be used for the strengthening of an existing structure and in the design of new structures. With its strain hardening ...

Due to ever increasing traffic demands the fatigue safety and service life of the bridges of a railway line in Brazil need to be examined. Conventional assessment methods using load models and approaches as suggested in codes lead to conservative results r ...
