Visual inspection of existing bridges is the main source of information to prioritize mainte- nance. This qualitative examination is thus a critical part of civil infrastructure management. In Switzerland, main inspections are typically made every five yea ...

So-called “non-load bearing” parts of (railway) bridges increase the stiffness and decrease the stresses in short span bridge structures. The rail track, consisting of ballast, sleepers and rails, has a non-linear behaviour and its rigidity depends on the ...

The conceptual designs by Christian Menn of four landmark bridges are presented: 1) a 350-m span cable-stayed bridge with jointless deck girder, 2) a cable-stayed bridge with a single “spindle-shaped” pylon, 3) a bridge with an arch reaching high above the ...

Material characterization tests of an Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) were performed at various ages. A linear relationship was obtained between the mechanical properties and the degree of hydration. In parallel, the influence of ...

Knowledge of the mechanical properties, i.e. strength, stiffness and deformation capacity, of cementitious materials at any arbitrary time is fundamental for operations such as removal of formwork, prestressing or cracking control. This paper presents a st ...

e numerical simulation of concrete dams subjected to earthquake loading requires realistic material laws which take into account seismic loading conditions. Dynamic tests were performed in order to examine the effect of initially applied compressive loading on material properties of a dam concrete at high tensile deformation rates. The test results show that no important fracture property is reduced at high deformation rates; the tensile strength and the specific fracture energy GF show a high rate sensitiv

This paper investigates the high cycle tensile fatigue behavior of steel rebar reinforced − UHPFRC elements, at a fatigue load ratio, i.e., R-ratio of 0.3, representative for structural applications. Prior to testing, magnetoscopy is conducted on each spec ...

The notion of Baukultur marked a fundamental step towards a comprehensive definition of the built environment. The idea that landscape, architectural heritage, and all the existing built context could converge to portray the richness and complexity of our habitat now points to a collective and strategic approach to design. In this perspective, the value of architecture arises essentially as a tool to convey the emerging culture of Transition within the existing Baukulturen. Architecture revalued structures

• Tensile fatigue under repeated two-level block loading is first studied, representing simplified service loading. • Partial recovery of deformation and stiffness during the lower stress cycles is first identified, analogous to damage-retardation mechanism in steels. • Fatigue cycles below the constant amplitude fatigue limit can be damaging. The tensile fatigue behavior of Ultra-High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced-Cementitious Composites (UHPFRC) is critical for the long-term performance of UHPFRC structure

Ultra High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composite (UHPFRC) is increasingly popular for new structural designs thanks to its high resistance both in tension and compression. When UHPFRC is complemented with steel reinforcing bars or prestressin ...

Ultra High Performances Fibre Reinforced Concretes (UHPFRC) are characterised by an ex-tremely low permeability and outstanding mechanical properties. These characteristics make UHPFRC suitable for locally “harden” reinforced concrete structures subjected ...

The transfer of technology from research to structural engineering and construction practice is illustrated using two cases of the implementation of innovative engineering methods and technologies in the renewal and 'upcycling' of existing bridges, namely ...

A framework to engineer existing structures, in particular bridges, and novel engineering methods and technologies are presented to extend the service duration of existing bridges while meeting the requirements of modern use. Accurate determination of brid ...

The purpose of this paper is to explore the UHPFRC time-dependent behavior under sustained tensile loading at very early age (3 days) and to highlight its sensitivity to the level of loading by laboratory testing and numerical analysis. Uniaxial creep and relaxation tests were performed at 3 days age at various stress levels by means of a Temperature-Stress Testing set-up (TSTM). Under low tensile stresses, the material exhibits a linear viscoelastic behavior. Under high tensile stresses the creep response

At early age, ultra high performance fibre reinforced concretes (UHPFRC)undergo significant volumes changes (thermal deformation and autogenous shrinkage)related to their composition. These deformations can be restrained by different elements respective to ...

Ultra high performance fibre reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) early age viscoelastic behaviour under tension was investigated. The tests results showed a high creep potential due to the high volume paste (88%). This result is of major importance because the vi ...

An experimental study on a series of composite beams combining a 250 mm (9.84 in.) deep reinforced concrete (RC) element and a 50 mm (1.97 in.) thick reinforced ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (R-UHPFRC) element is presented. The specimens ...

The behavior of reinforced-concrete structural elements under moving loads involves many complex parameters related to material properties, vehicle loading, environmental changes and structural response. It is difficult to generate the real conditions of l ...

With the occurrence of higher and more frequent axle loads, bridges are more solicited by fatigue loading. Bridge elements like deck slabs are subjected to a high number of stress cycles at relatively small stress magnitudes. The application of Fracture Me ...

Ultrahigh-performance concrete (UHPC) offers significant potential to address a variety of needs in bridge design, construction, and performance enhancement. Bridge owners have shown willingness to embrace novel solutions that could address specific challe ...
