Examination engineering (short: "Examineering") of existing bridges comprises accurate determination of structural behavior and targeted use of advanced materials for improvement of structural behavior with the ultimate goal of limiting construction interv ...

Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concretes (UHPFRC) combine outstanding protective (extremely low permeability) and mechanical (high tensile strength and significant tensile strain hardening) properties. These materials can be used in composite UHPF ...

Proper test and analysis methods are necessary for characterizing the tensile behavior of strain hardening Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (UHPFRC) accurately and representatively. In this paper, the direct tensile tests (DT ...

This paper presents an investigation of the influence of vehicle transverse in-lane position on bridge traffic load effects. To analyze the influence, both finite-element analysis and statistical analysis methods are used, and various technical aspects are ...

Because of its high tensile strength and deformation capacity, UHPFRC (Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious composite) can theoretically be used without any reinforcement bars or prestressing. However, for more economical design and for rea ...

Decisions regarding the management of civil infrastructure are becoming more crucial as a large share of bridges is presently approaching what is often considered to be the end of their theoretical service duration. Evaluating existing structures using a d ...

Aging bridges of the German federal road network often cannot be rehabilitated or replaced timely due to insufficient funding and complex regulations of building laws. Consequently, novel building materials and alternative solutions get the opportunity to ...

Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concretes (UHPFRC) present outstanding mechanical properties and a very low permeability. Those characteristics make them very attractive for the rehabilitation of existing structures and the conception of new struct ...

In recent years, monitoring has offered a viable complement or even alternative to traditional analytical safety verification approaches. However, there still remains a lack of guidance for the use of monitored data in safety verification work. Limited res ...

A reliable novel monitoring approach is developed to assess the structural condition of reinforced-concrete bridge elements. The approach is based on combining acoustic emission technique and strain gauge measurements, and it is illustrated by a case study ...

The numerical simulation of concrete dams subject to earthquake loading requires realistic material laws which take into account material properties as effected by seismic action. Experiments under simulated seismic action were performed to examine the effect of rapid compressive loading on the fracture properties of mass concrete at high tensile deformation rates. Loading histories, representing typical seismic action, were applied to the specimens. Fracture properties have been investigated by two types o

In the last decade, Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced cement-based Composites (UHPFRC) have been increasingly implemented for rehabilitation and strengthening purposes, rendering outstanding results. The ease of application, along with their superior ...

Road traffic loading is a highly variable process with a wide range of complex variables to consider. Consequently, various simplifying assumptions are required to efficiently model heavy traffic events for bridge safety verification, which reduce the accu ...

A numerical approach, named TransChlor, is proposed to simulate transport phenomena of various substances in concrete. This approach is a theoretical model based on finite elements and finite differences methods. The model consists of coupled nonlinear par ...

Fatigue safety verification of existing bridges that uses ‘‘re-calculation’’ based on codes, usually results in insufficient fatigue safety, triggering invasive interventions. Instead of “re-calculation”, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) should be used f ...

Recently, fiber reinforced cementitious materials with novel properties have been developed. Here, novel properties mean “high tensile strain capacity with strain hardening and multiple fine cracks” and “high durability due to dense matrix with extremely l ...

Ultra high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites (UHPFRCs) have demonstrated their outstanding efficiency as structural materials. Determination of the bending resistance of members combining UHPFRC with steel reinforcement bars (R-UHPFRC) u ...

With the occurrence of higher and more frequent axle loads on roads, in particular bridge deck slabs are more severely solicitated by fatigue loading. To avoid heavy interventions for strengthening of deck slabs, an improved building material is used, name ...

Quenched and self-tempered (QST) steel reinforcement bars (rebars) are manufactured by Thermex or Tempcore processes. Characterization studies of QST rebars are mostly limited to reveal the hardened outer layer and some improved mechanical properties compa ...

This paper discusses the influence of fiber orientation on elastic limit tensile stress of ultra-high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites (UHPFRC). An original model relating elastic limit tensile stress to fiber orientation is proposed, a ...
