Creating interactive characters is one of the most challenging tasks of videogame design. In order to facilitate such an endeavor, we introduce a decisional and behavior synthesis architecture integrated in the game engine Unity3D. A distinguishing feature ...

In this research paper, we conducted a study to investigate the connection between three objective measures: Electrocardiogram(ECG), Electrogastrogram (EGG), and Electroencephalogram (EEG), and individuals' susceptibility to cybersickness. Our primary obje ...

We present the disambiguation canvas, a technique developed for easy, accurate and fast selection of small objects and objects inside cluttered virtual environments. Disambiguation canvas rely on selection by progressive refinement, it uses a mobile device ...

The subjective experience of embodying an avatar when immersed in virtual reality (VR) is known to support the sense of presence and to help with the interaction in a virtual environment. Virtual embodiment is often thought of as the consequence of replace ...

The use of expressive Virtual Characters is an effective complementary means of communication for social networks offering multi-user 3D-chatting environment. In such context the facial expression channel offers a rich medium to translate the on-going emot ...

We introduce a new method for computerized real-time evaluation of femoroacetabular impingement (FM). In contrast to previously presented stress analyses, this method is based on two types of predictions of penetration depths for two rotating bodies: curvi ...

In immersive Virtual Reality (VR), users can experience the subjective feeling of embodiment for the avatar representing them in a virtual world. This is known to be strongly supported by a high Sense of Agency (SoA) for the movements of the avatar that fo ...

In combination with the rapid technical improvements of computers, building large virtual scenes has become a popular field in computer graphics. Often, within a real reconstructed city, a building that has disappeared, or a virtual town, virtual humans populating these scenes are expected to provide a feeling of real life. Our specific aim is to populate these scenes with virtual humans in order to offer assistance in decision making concerning urban infrastructures. In this view, we have to integrate the

We present a model to predict and represent human fatigue in a 3D interactive system. A fatigue model has been developed for the fatigue assessment of several joints of the human body within the static case hypothesis. The model incorporates normalized torques, joint strength and maximum holding time as parameters. Fatigue evolution is predicted taking into account how these variables evolve over time. The fatigue model is embedded within an Inverse Kinematics engine that tries to achieve user-defined goals

Over the past few years scientific research has opened up to the idea of using digital games for human-based studies. Fields such as Neuroscience, Medical and Affective Computing are currently using games to study human-based phenomena. Even though a vast ...

We extend the range of inverse kinematics by integrating mass distribution information to embody the position control of the center of gravity of any articulated figure in single support (open tree structure). The underlying control architecture of main and secondary behaviors (or tasks) is used to associate this new approach to other behaviors. We evaluate the use of these techniques for motion control and we present cascaded control as a way of hierarchically combining balance and other goal oriented beha

Despite the large success of games grounded on movement-based interactions the current state of full body motion capture technologies still prevents the exploitation of precise interactions with complex environments. This paper focuses on ensuring a precis ...

We are interested in developing real-time applications such as games or virtual prototyping that take advantage of the user full-body input to control a wide range of entities, from a self-similar avatar to any type of animated characters, including virtual humanoids with differing size and proportions. The key issue is, as always in real-time interactions, to identify the key factors that should get computational resources for ensuring the best user interaction efficiency. For this reason we first recall t

Hands deserve particular attention in virtual reality (VR) applications because they represent our primary means for interacting with the environment. Although marker-based motion capture works adequately for full body tracking, it is less reliable for sma ...

In this paper, we propose a hybrid postural control approach taking advantage of data-driven and goal-oriented methods while overcoming their limitations. In particular, we take advantage of the latent space characterizing a given motion database. We intro ...

We present a system to analyze the reachability of the human body. The inverse kinematics technique is employed to find which regions of space are reachable using a certain reach strategy. This information is stored in a data structure called volume approximation tree (VATree). This tree has proven itself to be an appropriate data structure for two reasons: it provides an efficient representation of the reachable volumes and it reduces the number of inverse kinematics simulations necessary for its construct

Achieving effective facial emotional expressivity within a real-time rendering constraint requests to leverage on all possible inspiration sources and especially from the observations of real individuals. One of them is the frequent asymmetry of facial exp ...

3D displays are becoming available to mainstream consumers, offering the ability to view and interact with 3D content without wearing AR/VR glasses. This paper reports the findings of a user study that compares the performance of a range of different input ...

Rendering and animating a multitude of articulated characters in real-time presents a real challenge, and few hardware systems are up to the task. Up to now, little research has been conducted to tackle the issue of real-time rendering of numerous virtual humans. However, due to the growing interest in collaborative virtual environments, the demand for numerous realistic avatars is becoming stronger. This paper presents a hardware-independent technique that improves the display rate of animated characters b

In the recent years medical diagnosis and surgery planning often require the precise evaluation of joint movements. This has led to exploit reconstructed three-dimensional models of the joint tissues obtained from CT or MR Images (for bones, cartilages, et ...
