Virtual Reality (VR) has the capability of fully immersing users into a wide variety of gaming experiences where the sole focus of the user is on that experience itself. One problem that often occurs when it comes to VR experiences is that of simulation si ...

Objective. A key challenge of virtual reality (VR) applications is to maintain a reliable human-avatar mapping. Users may lose the sense of controlling (sense of agency), owning (sense of body ownership), or being located (sense of self-location) inside th ...

We introduce a constraint-based motion editing technique enforcing the intrinsic motion flow of a given motion pattern (e.g., golf swing). Its major characteristic is to operate in the motion Principal Coefficients (PCs) space instead of the pose PCs space ...

Pressure sensitive inputs are an important feature for many XR design and creativity applications. This is typically accomplished using the trigger input on the default platform 6DoF controller. This paper reports the findings of a pilot user study that co ...

Motion capture techniques are rarely based on orientation measurements for two main reasons: (1) optical motion capture systems are designed for tracking object position rather than their orientation (which can be deduced from several trackers), (2) known animation techniques, like inverse kinematics or geometric algorithms, require position targets constantly, but orientation inputs only occasionally. We propose a complete human motion capture technique based essentially on orientation measurements. The po

Performing motor tasks in virtual environments is best achieved with motion capture and animation of a 3D character that participants control in real time and perceive as being their avatar in the virtual environment. A strong Sense of Embodiment (SoE) for ...

Presents a human walking model built from experimental data based on a wide range of normalized velocities. The model is structured on two levels. On the first level, global spatial and temporal characteristics are generated. On the second level, a set of parameterized trajectories produce both the position of the body in space and the internal body configuration. This is performed for a standard structure and an average configuration of the human body. The experimental context corresponding to the model is

The sense of embodiment in virtual reality (VR) is commonly understood as the subjective experience that one's physical body is substituted by a virtual counterpart, and is typically achieved when the avatar's body, seen from a first-person view, moves lik ...

We explore an approach to full-body motion edit- ing with linear motion models, prioritized constraint-based optimization and latent-space interpolation. By exploiting the mathematical connections between linear motion mod- els and prioritized inverse kine ...

In this article, we present a parallel prioritized Jacobian-based inverse kinematics algorithm for multithreaded architectures. We solve damped least squares inverse kinematics using a parallel line search by identifying and sampling critical input paramet ...

In this paper, we present an interactive motion deformation method to modify animations so that they satisfy a set of prioritized constraints. Our approach successfully handles the problem of retargeting and adjusting a motion, as well as adding significan ...

In this paper we introduce a real-time steering controller ensuring the reach of a (possible mobile) target position and orientation, without requiring to build/update the full trajectory to that target. We name it the funnelling control. The final orienta ...

This paper describes preliminary results of a research performed in the framework of the Enactive project (EU IST NoE Enactive). The aim of this research is to improve believability of a virtual character using qualitative analysis of gesture. Using techni ...

The current approach to train Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is to employ a mannequin device replicating the physical properties of a real human head and torso. This aims to ensure a correct transfer of the cardiac massage location, amplitude and freq ...

In this paper, we propose a method to achieve effective facial emotional expressivity for embodied conversational agents by considering two types of asymmetry when exploiting the Valence-Arousal-Dominance representation of emotions. Indeed, the asymmetry o ...

The perception of one’s own body is a complex mechanism that can be disturbed by conflicting sensory information and lead to illusory (mis-) perceptions. Prominent models of multisensory integration propose that sensory streams are integrated according to ...

In this paper, an interactive tool is proposed for the visualization, editing and manipulation of multiple track sequences. A sequence is associated with an articulated figure and can integrate different motion generators such as walking, inverse kinematics, and key framing within a unified framework. The TRACK system provides a large set of tools for track space manipulations and Cartesian space corrections. This approach allows an incremental refinement design combining information and constraints from bo

In this paper we propose a simple model for the coupling behavior of the human spine for an inverse kinematics framework. Our spine model exhibits anatomically correct motions of the vertebrae of virtual mannequins by coupling standard swing and revolute j ...

An interactive tool is proposed for the visualization, editing, and manipulation of multiple track sequences. Multiple tracks sequences can be associated with an articulated figure and may retain motion issued from different motion generators such as walking, inverse kinematics, and key framing within a unified framework. The TRACK system provides a large set of tools for track space manipulations and goal-oriented corrections. This approach allows an incremental refinement design combining information and

This paper presents a human walking model built from experimental data based on a wide range of normalized velocities. The model is structured in two levels. At a first level, global spatial and temporal characteristics (normalized length and step duration) are generated. At the second level, a set of parameterized trajectories produce both the position of the body in the space and the internal body configuration in particular the pelvis and the legs. This is performed for a standard structure and an averag
