The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of altitude and distance on uphill vertical speed (VS) and the main spatio-temporal gait parameters during an extreme mountain ultra-marathon. The VS, stride height (SH) and stride frequency (SF) ...

In this work we designed and tested an in-vivo measurement system of prosthetic knee joint angles. The system included a small permanent magnet in the femoral part and three magneto resistance sensors placed in the polyethylene part. The sensor configurati ...

Presented is an accurate swimming velocity estimation method using an inertial measurement unit (IMU) by employing a simple biomechanical constraint of motion along with Gaussian process regression to deal with sensor inherent errors. Experimental validati ...

Variable definitions of outcome (Constant score, Simple Shoulder Test [SST]) have been used to assess outcome after shoulder treatment, although none has been accepted as the universal standard. Physicians lack an objective method to reliably assess the activity of their patients in dynamic conditions. Our purpose was to clinically validate the shoulder kinematic scores given by a portable movement analysis device, using the activities of daily living described in the SST as a reference. The secondary objec

This study proposed a new metric to assess the arm mobility based on the monitoring of daily activity using inertial sensors. Forty-one healthy participants and 21 patients suffering from rotator cuff tear disease were evaluated using a clinical questionnaire and one day measurement of the arm kinematics. Arm movements were detected from inertial data, and characterized by their velocity. Cumulative distribution of the velocities of each patient was compared to the reference distribution of controls, using

Distinguishing sedentary from dynamic behavior is essential in addressing disease conditions that are influenced by mobility. Event-based activity recognition algorithms essentially rely on accurate classification of siting and standing postural transition ...

Upper limb assessments in children with hemiparesis rely on clinical measurements, which despite standardization are prone to error. Recently, 3D movement analysis using optoelectronic setups has been used to measure upper limb movement, but generalization ...

Time periods composing stance phase of gait can be clinically meaningful parameters to reveal differences between normal and pathological gait. This study aimed, first, to describe a novel method for detecting stance and inner-stance temporal events based ...

For the purpose of gaining a deeper understanding of the relationship between external training load and health in competitive alpine skiing, an accurate and precise estimation of the athlete's kinematics is an essential methodological prerequisite. This s ...

Here we present a low-power magnetic measurement system based on only two Hall-effect elements and a permanent magnet integrated into a smart knee prosthesis to accurately measure knee flexion-extension. The smart prosthesis was tested in a robotic knee si ...

Gait speed as a powerful biomarker of mobility is mostly assessed in controlled environments, e.g. in the clinic. With wearable inertial sensors, gait speed can be estimated in an objective manner. However, most of the previous works have validated the gai ...

A new method of monitoring physical activity that is able to detect walking upstairs using a miniature gyroscope attached to the shank is presented. Wavelet transformation, in conjunction with a simple kinematics model, was used to detect toe-off, heel-str ...

An ambulatory system for quantification of tremor and bradykinesia in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) is presented. To record movements of the upper extremities, a sensing units which included miniature gyroscopes, has been fixed to each of the fore ...

Activity monitoring in daily life is gaining momentum as a health assessment tool, especially in older adults and at-risk populations. Several research-based and commercial systems have been proposed with varying performances in classification accuracy. Co ...

This study aimed to validate a wearable device's walking speed estimation pipeline, considering complexity, speed, and walking bout duration. The goal was to provide recommendations on the use of wearable devices for real-world mobility analysis. Participa ...

In clinical settings, the cervical range of motion (ROM) is commonly used to assess cervical spine function. This study aimed at assessing cervical spine mobility based on head and thorax kinematics measured with a wearable inertial system (WS). Sequences ...

Purpose: The aim of this study was to provide a theoretical model to predict the vertical loading rate (VLR) at different slopes and speeds during incline running. ...

An ubiquitous assessment of swimming velocity (main metric of the performance) is essential for the coach to provide a tailored feedback to the trainee. We present a probabilistic framework for the data-driven estimation of the swimming velocity at every c ...

The biomechanical analysis of swimming always faced impeding factors of measurement in the aquatic environment. Our current knowledge of swimming locomotion is very much owing to employing video cameras to capture the body kinematics. Nevertheless, the rec ...

The purpose of this study was to assess the potential of using a sacrum-worn inertial measurement unit (IMU) for performance evaluation in each swimming phase (wall push-off, glide, stroke preparation, and swimming) of national-level swimmers in front crawl technique. Nineteen swimmers were asked to wear a sacrum IMU and swim four one-way 25-m trials in front crawl, attached to a tethered speedometer and filmed by cameras in the whole lap for validation. Based on the literature, several goal metrics were de
