Background: Understanding the association between motor capacity (MC) (what people can do in a standardized environment), mobility performance (MP) (what people actually do in real-life) and falls is important for early detection of and counteracting on fu ...

A portable data logger is designed to record body accelerations during human walking, Five subjects walk first on a treadmill at various speeds on the level, and at positive and negative inclines. Then, the subjects performed a self-pace walking on an outdoor test circuit involving roads of various inclines, The recorded signals are parameterized, and the pattern of walking at each gait cycle is found. These patterns re presented to two neural networks which estimate the incline and the Speed of walking. Th

Knee implant loosening is mainly caused by the weakness of the prosthesis-bone interface and is the main reason for surgical revisions. However, pre-operative diagnosis is difficult due to lack of accurate tests. In this study, we developed a vibration-bas ...

Assessment of locomotion through simple tests such as timed up and go (TUG) or walking trials can provide valuable information for the evaluation of treatment and the early diagnosis of people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Common methods used in clinics a ...

This study is aimed at the determination of the measurement properties of the shoulder function B-B Score measured with a smartphone. This score measures the symmetry between sides of a power-related metric for two selected movements, with 100% representin ...

This study proposes three simple approaches to estimate the stride count and frequency during walking and running using an inertial measurement system on the wrist. The approaches were based on a time-domain, frequency-domain and autocorrelation analysis, ...

In this work we present the smart knee prosthesis designed for in-vivo kinematics measurement and its validation in two knee simulators, i.e. a robotic knee simulator to provide realistic condition, and a manual simulator with more degrees of freedom. The ...

This study compared the outcome of total knee replacement (TKR) in adult patients with fixed- and mobile-bearing prostheses during the first post-operative year and at five years' follow-up, using gait parameters as a new objective measure. This double-bli ...

A measurement system for a wearable item comprising a capacitive pressure sensing system (5) including a plurality of capacitive sensors (6) comprising a deformable insulator layer (32a, 32b) and at least first and second electrodes (30a, 30b, 30c) on oppo ...

Objective: To examine the relationship between falls efficacy and the change in gait speed and functional status in older patients undergoing postacute rehabilitation. ...

Quantifying daily physical activity in older adults can provide relevant monitoring and diagnostic information about risk of fall and frailty. In this study, we introduce instrumented shoes capable of recording movement and foot loading data unobtrusively ...

Context Long-term adherence to physical activity (PA) interventions is challenging. The Lifestyle-integrated Functional Exercise programmes were adapted Lifestyle-integrated Functional Exercise (aLiFE) to include more challenging activities and a behaviour ...

Front crawl is an alternating swimming stroke technique in which different phases of arm movement induce changes in acceleration of limbs and body. This study proposes a new approach to use inertial body worn sensors to estimate main temporal phases of fro ...

Dual-task related gait changes have been previously reported for healthy older adults, suggesting that gait control requires attention. Compared to balance control, the involvement of attention in the control of the rhythmic stepping mechanism, as reflecte ...

Ligament balance is an important and subjective task performed during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedure. For this reason, it is desirable to develop instruments to quantitatively assess the soft-tissue balance since excessive imbalance can accelerate ...

Introduction: Gait speed is a simple and safe measure with strong predictive value for negative health outcomes in clinical practice, yet in-laboratory gait speed seems not representative for daily-life gait speed. This study aimed to investigate the inter ...

Introduction The European population is rapidly ageing. In order to handle substantial future challenges in the healthcare system, we need to shift focus from treatment towards health promotion. The PreventIT project has adapted the Lifestyle-integrated Ex ...
