Marathon running involves complex mechanisms that cannot be measured with objective metrics or laboratory equipment. The emergence of wearable sensors introduced new opportunities, allowing the continuous recording of relevant parameters. The present study ...

Accurate measurement of knee kinematics during functional activities suffers mainly from soft tissue artifact (STA): the combination of local surface deformations and rigid movement of markers relative to the underlying bone (also called rigid STA movement ...

A measurement system (3) for a wearable item (2) comprising a pressure sensing system including a plurality of capsule chambers (22) each filled with a fluid, and pressure sensors (28) connected to the capsule chambers configured to measure a variation in ...

This paper describes the development of a polyimide-based MEMS strain-sensing device. Finite element analysis was used to investigate an artificial knee implant and assist on device design and to optimize sensing characteristics. The sensing element of the ...

The recent advances in wearable inertial sensors opened a new horizon for pervasive measurement of human locomotion even in aquatic environment. In this paper we proposed an automatic approach of detecting the key temporal events of breaststroke swimming a ...

We propose a new minimal wearable system and a classifier for physical activity recognition. The configuration is solely based on two force sensors placed anteriorly and posteriorly under the feet. To find the optimal sensor configuration, we estimated the ...

This paper describes the development of a sport watch, as well as the software and hardware required to design an integrated solution for getting feedback during and after walking and running activities. The developed system is autonomous, so that neither ...

The aim of this study was to extract multi-parametric measures characterizing different features of sit-to-stand (Si-St) and stand-to-sit (St-Si) transitions in older persons, using a single inertial sensor attached to the chest. Investigated parameters we ...

The aim of this study was to determine outcomes of total hip replacement (THR) with the Lemania cemented femoral stem. A total of 78 THR patients were followed and compared to 17 "fit", healthy, elderly and 72 "frail" elderly subjects without THR, using cl ...

Dual-task-related gait changes among older adults while they perform spoken verbal tasks have been reported frequently. The authors examined whether the type of walking-associated spoken verbal task matters for dual-task-related gait changes in 16 older ad ...

Body accelerations during human walking are recorded by a portable measuring device. A new method for parameterising body accelerations is introduced. The parameters are presented to a Kohonen neural network classifier and the feasibility of identification and dissociation of level and walking on a gradient is demonstrated. The most important and original aspect of this classification is its ability to identify the gradient of walking performed in free- living conditions from walking trained on a treadmill.

High stride-to stride variability and the inability to walk and talk at the same time have been associated with an increased risk of falling (1;2). The aim of this study was to compare stride-to-stride variation in stride length and velocity beween community dwelling older and young adults under dual-task condition

Two methods to fuse a 3D gyroscope with a 3D accelerometer in order to measure rotations are presented. They are compared with a method requiring only a 3D gyroscope and assessed with a reference system. The good reported accuracies make this system suitab ...

Pacing tactics in the swimming bout notably influences the overall triathlon performance. Besides, the swimming velocity affects the energy expenditure (EE). Based on our previous works to estimate the swimming velocity, here we propose a system to measure ...

Activity monitoring in daily life is gaining momentum as a health assessment tool, especially in older adults and at-risk populations. Several research-based and commercial systems have been proposed with varying performances in classification accuracy. Co ...
