The objective of this paper is to assess the capability of existing lighting simulation methods to predict the performance of Complex Fenestration Systems (CFS), whose potential in daylight and sunlight control make them an increasingly popular alternative ...

The built environment is one of the major contributors of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To tackle climate change, global targets have been set for this sector. Although life-cycle assessment (LCA) methods are typically used to evaluate a building project ...

Daylight has an undeniable value in various aspects of architectural design, ranging from energy efficiency and user comfort to our experience of space. Even though there is substantial evidence of the positive effects of daylight access on occupants, we h ...

This interdisciplinary research aims at addressing a question common to the fields of architecture, building technology and psychophysics: are there objective relationships between perceived comfort, occupant response patterns and lighting conditions? The prospect of getting a grasp on these relationships immediately opens up new opportunities for improved workspace design – towards higher productivity and performance – and for further investigations on well-being in built spaces and a deeper understanding

The building sector is known as a major contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy consumption. These impacts are commonly evaluated by life cycle assessment (LCA), which assess the potential impacts of a building from the construction to the ...

This study investigates the effect of short exposure to coloured light on thermal perception. To give the impression of natural daylight passing through coloured filters, but avoiding the drawbacks of conducting an experiment with daylight, continuously changing due to daily and seasonal variations, and to weather conditions, we investigate the use of Virtual Reality as a means to control the visual conditions, creating a hybrid environment with thermal and visual stimuli from the real and virtual world, re

In accordance with the Paris agreement, the Swiss Climate Strategy (SCS) defines the net-zero target to be reached before 2050, which demands for a thoughtful carbon budget allocation between the different contributors. Ongoing normalization tasks are curr ...

Maximizing daylight access while maintaining a glare-free indoor environment is an ongoing challenge for daylighting design. Glare is a discomfort sensation that is produced as a result of greater variation of luminance across the visual field than the one that the eye is adapted to. This type of discomfort sensation is one of the main drivers for building users' interaction with the façcade setting, which consequently can change the building's performance over time. Optimised integration of glare-free dayl

The influence of color on discomfort glare from daylight remains unknown, despite its known effects in electric lighting. This gap limits the ability to predict and mitigate glare in environments with colored glazing and filtered daylight. To address this, we conducted experiments in a controlled daylit office where 56 participants were exposed to four glare conditions induced by the sun visible behind the colored glazing. The conditions differed only in glazing color (red, blue, green, and neutral) towards

This Recommended Practice conveniently gathers the basic data and techniques which help those concerned with the design of buildings and lighting systems understand and appreciate the opportunities and constraints inherent in daylighting. Daylighted buildi ...

Visual comfort is one of the main concerns for the integration of daylighting strategies in workspaces. Depending on the occupants’ seating position, light distribution in the field-of-view (FOV) can range from interesting highlights to visually discomforting situations which makes visual comfort highly dependent on dynamics of occupants’ view direction in the room. These undesirable situations, known as discomfort glare, have also been recognized as being the main drivers to change the façade setting. Cons

The Cradle to Cradle (C2C) paradigm is emerging as an important regenerative design approach. C2C is aiming to create a positive footprint of the built environment, beyond carbon neutrality. However, there are very few studies that address the application ...

Evaluation of solar heat gain and daylight distribution through complex window and shading systems requires the determination of the bi-directional transmission distribution function (BTDF). Measurement of BTDF can be time-consuming, and inaccuracies are likely because of physical constraints and experimental adjustments. A general calculation methodology, based on more easily measurable component properties, would be preferable and would allow much more flexibility. In this paper, measurements and calculat

The Unified Glare Rating(UGR) was introduced by the CIE as a simpler alternative to the CIE Glare Index(CGI) for predicting discomfort glare from electric lighting, using background luminance(Lb) instead of vertical illuminance(Ev) for adaptation. With the rise of image-based luminance measurements, CGI’s complexity is no longer a limitation, prompting renewed comparison between the two models. This study evaluated UGR and CGI under controlled electric lighting with multiple glare sources, building on findi

This paper presents a new workflow for the generation of color and luminance calibrated high dynamic range (HDR) images. By investigating the relationship between some of the key generation steps along the path from light entering the camera to a pixel in the final image, the important sources of uncertainty are identified and mitigated as much as possible. This paper shows how adjustments to the HDR pipeline and additional calibration steps will lead to more consistent results that are robust across a wide

Daylit architecture is perceived as a dynamic luminous composition, yet most existing performance metrics were designed to evaluate natural illumination for its ability to adequately illuminate a two-dimensional task surface and avoid glare-based discomfor ...

For field research of non-visual effects of light, accurate measurement of personal light exposure is required. A consensus framework for light-dosimetry could improve non-visual field research and ensure comparability between studies. Here, we present a r ...

For some time the building industry has been in need of a comprehensive reference that describes new and innovative technologies for utilizing daylight in buildings and assesses the performance of these systems. This information is of particular benefit to building design practitioners, lighting engineers, product manufacturers, building owners, and property managers. This book is the result of a coordinated international effort to gather the most up-to-date information available about the application and e

Windows play a vital role in occupants’ well-being, yet quantitative methods for analysing how people interact with window views remain limited. This paper introduces a novel computer-vision framework for assessing both movement and gaze dynamics in window views. First, we analyse real-time eye-tracking data from 84 participants viewing 35 high-resolution window-view recordings, revealing a clear hierarchy of attention drivers: semantic and social objects dominate viewing patterns (57.3% importance), follow
