We briefly categorize and compare parallel goniophotometers, which are instruments capable of simultaneously measuring the far-field distribution of light scattered by a surface or emitted by a source over a large solid angle. Little is known about the acc ...

The need for adequate instruments to support practitioners toward achieving sustainable and energy-efficient architectural and urban design has long been acknowledged. Motivated by identified shortcomings of building performance assessment tools for concep ...

Two pairs of identical experimentation modules are being developed within the framework of a collaborative initiative named NOMAD – Network of Optimization Modalities in Architectural Design - between the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Performance-Integrated Design (LIPID) and the Laboratory of Architecture and Sustainable Technologies (LAST), both at EPFL. NOMAD relates to a series of projects related to the optimization of the building envelope in a sustainability context. Based on comparative evaluation

This paper provides a validation of a novel sampling, storage, and evaluation method named raytraverse that can quickly and accurately compute glare and visual comfort metrics including vertical illuminance, Daylight Glare Probability (DGP), and Unified Gl ...

Findings from neuroscience are increasingly interwoven with architectural research (1,2). Understanding physiological responses to environmental stimuli in the built environment is critical when evaluating occupant health and wellbeing. Research in the fie ...

Existing research on user’s satisfaction at the workplace have shown that occupants’ perceived comfort depends on a number of environmental and non-environmental factors and that forgiveness, meant as the indulgent attitude towards inadequate indoor enviro ...

The spectral sensitivity of the average human eye in photopic conditions is represented by the photopic luminosity function V (λ). The CIE has established the photopic luminosity functions for the 2o and 10o visual fields for a standard observer applicable ...

Blurring the boundaries between art and science, this study examines how dynamic natural and architectural elements influence psychiatric care at Klinik Hietzing in Vienna. Building on prior research into virtual window views, we focus on the therapeutic potential of open, unfenced gardens, circular layouts, and historical facades that shape patient well-being. Through interviews, observational studies, and a historical review of Vienna’s evolving psychiatric facilities, we illustrate how artistic principle

Office employees are exposed to a variety of environmental and contextual stimuli that might drive them to perform control actions, such as operating windows or window blinds. These actions have a significant impact on building energy use and increase unce ...

A well daylighted space can provide a highly satisfying visual environment. However, if that environment causes us visual discomfort, it can become such a nuisance that we, sometimes literally, turn our backs on this powerful connection to the outside worl ...

Due to different temporal combinations of energy generation processes, the global warming potential (GWP) of energy supply evolves constantly. Despite this, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to the energy consumption in buildings are commonly asse ...

Humans perceive daylight as a rich and dynamic luminous composition and yet existing performance metrics most often evaluate natural illumination for its ability to adequately illuminate a two-dimensional task surface while avoiding glare-based visual disc ...

Relatively recent cultural and technological changes, particularly in Westernized societies, have led to habitat and lifestyle shifts that have gradually estranged us from daylight. Although human beings are resilient and appear able to cope with extreme variations in environmental and living conditions, this process of separation can have negative impacts on health and well-being. Further research is essential in order to understand the impact of these changes and to initiate corrective measures, from chan

Modern life in predominantly indoor environments has led to a profound alteration in the amount, spectral distribution, and pattern of light humans are exposed to daily. Given the role of light in health and well-being, and to understand how modern living ...

At the conceptual stage, building performance simulation (BPS) based evaluations are being increasingly used for tasks such as ranking of competing massing design proposals. However, such conceptual stage evaluations suffer from information deficiency in b ...

A mechanism to accurately assess the performance of complex fenestration systems (CFS) is crucial for driving the appropriate adoption of these technologies to improve user comfort and energy use in both new construction and retrofit design. Typically, CFS are not provided sufficient consideration because user intuition is lacking: existing metrics, while valid for conventional systems, fail to reveal the dynamic nature of the performance of CFS. Conducting and reporting elaborate simulation results is neit

The presence of vegetation can significantly affect the solar irradiation received on building surfaces. Due to the complex shape and seasonal variability of vegetation geometry, this topic has gained much attention from researchers. However, existing meth ...

Amid rising resource depletion and global emissions, the building sector, one of the most resource-intensive domains, has become central to energy and sustainability initiatives. Efforts, particularly through urban densification and envelope refinements, have primarily focused on improving buildings’ energy efficiency and environmental performance. However, recent shifts aim for a more holistic approach that also prioritizes occupant health, prompted by evidence that stringent energy measures can negatively

OCULIGHT dynamics engaged their collective expertise to analyse the various factors involved in how VELUX’s Living Places harnesses daylight for a healthy indoor living experience. They considered the comfort the indoor space offers, so that occupants can enjoy and appreciate daylight without too much brightness and glare. They also looked at the emotional and physiological effects of daylight, how it visually stimulates us through the composition of contrast and how it influences our vitality and bodily re

To face climate change, Switzerland proposes the 2050 energy strategy by fixing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission targets for the built environment. Designers will then have to increase operating performances while inimizing embodied impacts. This represents a ...
