Physical models are commonly used to assess daylighting performance of buildings using sky simulators for purpose of research as well as practice. Recent studies have pointed out the general tendency of scale model assessments to overestimate the performance, usually expressed through work plane illuminance and daylight factor profiles, when compared to the real buildings. The cause of the discrepancy between buildings and scale models is due to several sources of experimental errors, such as modelling of b

Daylighting is by nature a multi-dimensional quality in a space. It reveals its volumes and surfaces in a dynamic way, influences visual interest and enables visual performance while also constraining it, and has physiological and behavioral impacts on the space’s occupants. All these effects need to be brought together to lead to a satisfying space design and experience with one recurring question : how to best balance the resources we have available (solar radiation, energy, climate, natural or built surr

Lightsolve is an innovative tool that offers architects and lighting engineers a goal-based simulation platform for daylighting performance evaluation in early stages of building design. Users can import their own 3D model and define their own design goals for a comprehensive spectrum of daylighting performance perspectives regarding task illumination, visual comfort, overheating risks, health effects and visual interest of a space. The tool provides key information to the designer that is easy and intuitiv

Recent developments in the lighting research field have demonstrated the importance of a proper exposure to light to mediate several of our behavioral and physiological responses. However, we spend nowadays around 90% of our time indoors with an often quit ...

The global construction industry contributes 37% of energy-related carbon emissions and it is mandated to achieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 as a crucial step towards achieving net-zero targets by the mid-century. As we strive for low-carbon buildings that align with these targets, it is imperative to ensure buildings are comfortable for their inhabitants. Daylight, valued for providing illumination and enhancing well-being, is a key component that also influences the building's carbon emis

Building Performance Simulation (BPS), a useful tool to assess the operational performance of buildings and systems, can often be computationally expensive. The use of BPS is cumbersome for problems where the speed of response is important, e.g. real-time ...

Our visual perception of the world - seeing form and colour or navigating the environment - depends on the interaction of light and matter in the environment. Light also has a more fundamental role in regulating rhythms in physiology and behaviour, as well ...

Defining indoor environmental conditions that meet the needs and preferences of occupants in open space offices can be challenging since the same space might be occupied by people with different individual needs and preferences regarding what constitutes a ...

Despite recent developments, neighborhood-scale performance assessment at the early-design phase is seldom carried out in practice, notably due to high computational complexity, time requirement, and perceived need for expert knowledge, ultimately limiting ...

While ambitious environmental objectives are being set for new constructions in Switzerland, the assessment of urban-scale projects and comparison of their performance to national targets are made possible by a growing number of life-cycle assessment (LCA) ...

Despite recent developments, the need for adequate guidance and support in the early decision-making process of urban planners, designers, and architects has recurrently been recognized. Traditional performance assessment methods, which are often based on ...

Virtual Reality (VR) technology is increasingly employed in daylight and view-out research, yet many existing approaches rely on static imagery that fails to capture the dynamic, temporal qualities of real-world environments. To address this gap, we present a workflow that integrates real-time stereoscopic video into VR, enabling the representation of evolving daylight conditions and exterior views. This paper details step-by-step procedures for initial setup, video processing, experiment implementation, an

Previous studies have shown that the choice of the behavioural model for the control of lighting and shading devices has important implications in the energy performance assessment of office buildings and directly influences the comparison of design altern ...

More and more refined methods are currently being developed that aim to inform designers about daylighting management in a comprehensive way, many of which try to investigate annual daylighting potential through climate-based modeling. In this paper, we pr ...

A thorough knowledge of the angular distribution of light scattered by an illuminated surface under different angles is essential in numerous industrial and research applications. Traditionally, the angular distribution of a reflected or transmitted light ...

Although fabrics are widely used as shading devices, reliable simulation models are rather rare and therefore the choice of a fabric with appropriate material characteristics is difficult. This paper presents a simulation model, which can be applied to most of the common available fabric shading materials. Furthermore a comprehensive simulation study has been conducted in order to derive simple to use tables for the selection of appropriate shading properties for a designer. These tables enable the user to

This paper investigates the impact of transmittance level and layout variations of semi-transparent photovoltaics (STPV) on both energy performance and occupancy-based visual and thermal comfort, simulating a reference office with a fully south-oriented gl ...

Access to natural light – particularly precious in northern latitudes – greatly impacts how a building is experienced by its occupants. It affects their well-being, notably from their health and biological clock perspectives, but also their perceived visual and thermal comfort, or their emotional response. This lecture explores current research efforts reaching out to different fields of science to bring these considerations into the design of places of delightful – and daylightful – living.

An accurate knowledge of the directional optical properties of advanced fenestration materials is necessary for them to be adequately integrated in buildings. These properties are expressed by the Bidirectional Transmission (or Reflection) Distribution Fun ...

Given buildings’ significant share in global resource use, they have become central to international net-zero targets for 2050. However, the strong focus on energy savings, driven by regulations and densification policies, can sometimes come at the expense of indoor environmental quality (IEQ), as demonstrated by recent investigations into energy-efficient buildings. Using a simulation-based workflow that integrates the EnergyPlus and Radiance engines, validated with measured environmental quality data, thi
