Providing adequate glare protection and a view to the outside through fabric shading devices is challenging because these two objectives require conflicting material properties for a fully lowered shading. In a semi -controlled office-like experiment invol ...

Urban morphology, including building typology and layout, has a significant influence on the built environment’s access to the sun, which impacts its energy exchange with the environment. This energy exchange is a strong factor in determining the comfort l ...

Efficient daylighting and solar control strategies can have a tremendous impact on energy use. But any savings can only be effective if one also carefully accounts for our comfort, well-being and health criteria. This talk will explore current research efforts at the interface between architecture and building technology, with a focus on the integration of building performance in design especially as far as daylighting and passive solar strategies are concerned. We need more efforts to provide building desi

Unlike artificial light sources, which can be calibrated to meet a desired luminous effect regardless of latitude, climate, or time of day, daylight is a dynamic light source, which produces variable shadow patterns and fluctuating levels of brightness. Wh ...

Daylight plays a central role in synchronizing the human circadian system, exerting profound non-visual effects on physiology, cognition, and emotional well-being. While most research on these effects has relied on artificial lighting in tightly controlled laboratory settings, such conditions fail to capture the spectral and temporal complexity of natural light exposure in real-life environments. This paper introduces a novel experimental methodology designed to systematically compare the non-visual impacts

Saliency models are image-based prediction models that estimate human visual attention. Such models, when applied to architectural spaces, could pave the way for design decisions where visual attention is taken into account. In this study, we tested the pe ...

While architecture is composed of static structural elements, daylit space is perceived as a dynamic play of light and shadow – ephemeral qualities that add depth, texture, and movement to spatial composition. Our perception of architecture is greatly impacted by the intensity and geometry of natural light, which creates dynamic temporal effects through hourly and daily shifts in solar orientation. While most designers can agree that the composition of natural light is an important design consideration for

High-technology glazing panes are designed to meet the need for natural light, while optimizing key functions such as reducing solar heat gain in spaces and/or redirecting daylight to the rear of the spaces. However, the actual performance in terms of both ...

The perceptual performance of architecture can be greatly altered by the ephemeral quality of daylight. Unlike artificial light sources, which can be adjusted to meet performance criteria regardless of geographic location and time of day, daylight is a variable source of illumination. When used to illuminate the static environment of a building, sunlight can dramatically alter our perception of interior architecture. Despite a wide range of daylight design strategies, neither high nor low levels of contrast

The aim of this paper is to provide a systematic understanding, through simulation-based assessment, of how contemporary urban planning affects the bioclimatic features of existing historic architecture. An emblematic early 20th century Brazilian building, the Casa das Rosas in São Paulo, has been chosen as a case study to see how the deep transformation of its surroundings has altered its indoor conditions. Taking into account both the original and the current urban and environmental conditions, a two-step

Existing daylight standards encourage larger glazed areas, which often results in larger solar gains in the summer and heat losses in the winter. To avoid these, shadings, thicker frames and multiple panes of glass are required to respect operational energ ...

Light dosimetry aims to measure personal light exposure with wearable sensors, which is a complex multistep procedure. The resulting data may be used to investigate non-visual effects of light in real-life settings, to validate laboratory findings and answ ...

The design of systems for solar light collection, modulation and/or distribution requires a thorough knowledge of their optical properties. The angular distribution of the scattered incident light flux, described by the Bidirectional Scattering Distribution Function (BSDF), can be measured with a step-by-step scanning goniophotometer but requires considerable time, especially when aiming at high angular resolution over a wide range and numerous incidence angles like in typical solar applications. Considerab

Façades and light pattern composition have been shown to influence the spatial experience and physiological responses of humans [1,2]. The present study examines the effect of sunlight penetration and window size on fixations to the floor of the scene, and ...

Most energy saving applications of advanced fenestration systems (solar blinds, novel types of glazing and daylight redirecting devices) require a precise knowledge of their directional light transmission features. These photometric properties can be described by a Bi-directional Transmission Distribution Function (BTDF) whose experimental assessment requires appropriate equipment. A novel bi-directional transmission photogoniometer, based on digital imaging techniques, was designed and set up for that purp

It is now widely accepted that the standard method for daylighting evaluation - the daylight factor – is due for replacement with metrics founded on absolute values for luminous quantities predicted over the course of a full year using sun and sky conditions derived from standardised climate files. The move to more realistic measures of daylighting introduces significant levels of additional complexity in both the simulation of the luminous quantities and the reduction of the simulation data to readily inte

24-hour cycles of light and dark are one of the most significant factors in the built environment that affect human health and wellbeing. In addition to stimulating visual responses, light induces a range of circadian, physiological and behavioral responses in humans, including sleep quality, hormone production, alertness and cognitive performance. These nonvisual responses are primarily mediated via a novel type of photoreceptors that contain the photopigment melanopsin. These photoreceptors can function i

This presentation will discuss how recent findings in photobiology about the correlation between lighting and the human circadian system can prospectively be applied to architectural design, with a focus on healthcare and housing environments. Outcomes of photobiology research were used to define threshold values for illumination in terms of spectrum, intensity, and timing of light at the human eye, and were translated into goals for simulation – and ultimately for building design. While no actual recommend

Optical concentration obtained by light confinement bears unique features that can increase the efficiency of a photochemical reactor. A suitable implementation of this method for a solar reactor is a series of parallel tubular receivers sealed in a slab-s ...

The energy performance of a building is strongly influenced by its level of solar exposure, in turn affected by the climate, built context, and building morphological characteristics. Since these are typically fixed at the early- design phase, performance ...
