During loading of viscoelastic tissues, part of the mechanical energy is transformed into heat that can locally increase the tissue temperature, a phenomenon known as self-heating. In the framework of mechanobiology, it has been accepted that cells react a ...

The aim of this investigation was to test the biocompatibility of three-dimensional bioresorbable foams made of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA), alone or filled with hydroxyapatite (HA) or beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP), with human primary osteoblasts, usi ...

The differentiation of mesenchymal stromal cells has been shown to be af- fected by many parameters such as morphogens, flow rate, medium viscosity, and shear stress when exposed to fluid flow. The mechanism by which these cells sense their environment is ...

Background/Objectives: Biological products are emerging as therapeutic management options for intervertebral disc (IVD) degenerative affections and lower back pain. Autologous and allogeneic cell therapy protocols have been clinically implemented for IVD r ...

Articular cartilage regeneration poses particularly tough challenges for implementing cell-‐based therapies. Many cell types have been investigated looking for a balanced combination of responsiveness and stability, yet techniques are still far from defin ...

Development of mechanically durable and biologically inductive hydrogels is a major challenge for load-bearing applications such as engineered cartilage. Dissipative capacity of articular cartilage is central to its functional behavior when submitted to lo ...

Current restrictions for human cell-based therapies have been related to technological limitations with regards to cellular proliferation capacity and maintenance of differentiated phenotype for primary human cell culture. In our experience, we have seen t ...

The goal of the present work was assess the feasibility of using a pseudo-inverse and null-space optimization approach in the modeling of the shoulder biomechanics. The method was applied to a simplified musculoskeletal shoulder model. The mechanical syste ...

Photopolymerization is a common method to harden materials initially in a liquid state. A surgeon can directly trigger the solidification of a dental implant or a bone or tissue filler by using ultra-violet light. Traditionally, photopolymerization has bee ...

Hyaline cartilage, a soft tissue enriched with a dynamic extracellular matrix, manifests as a supramolecular system within load-bearing joints. At the same time, the challenge of cartilage repair through tissue engineering lies in replicating intricate cel ...

Metabolism of proteoglycans and hyaluronic acid has been shown to be temperature- dependent in cartilage explants, with optimal anabolic effects between 36 1C and 38 1C. At rest, the temperature of human knee has a value of around 33 1C. We aim to show in ...

A polymer material system has been developed to propose an injectable, UV and in situ curable hydrogel with properties similar to the native nucleus pulposus of intervertebral disc. Neat hydrogels based on Tween® 20 trimethacrylates (T3) and N-vinyl-2-pyrr ...

The drive to develop cartilage implants for the treatment of major defects in the musculoskeletal sys-tem has resulted in a major research thrust towards developing biomaterial devices for cartilage repair. Investigational devices for the restoration of ar ...

The surgical treatments of injured soft tissues lead to further injury due to the use of sutures or the surgical routes, which need to be large enough to insert biomaterials for repair. In contrast, the use of low viscosity photopolymerizable hydrogels tha ...

Few biopharmaceutical preparations developed from biologicals are available for tissue regeneration and scar management. When developing biological treatments with cellular therapy, selection of cell types and establishment of consistent cell banks are cru ...

Introduction: Managing osteoporotic patients at immediate fracture risk is challenging, in part due to the slow and localized effects of anti-osteoporotic drugs. Combining systemic anti-osteoporotic therapies with local bone augmentation techniques offers ...

Rapid adhesion between tissue and synthetic materials is relevant to accelerate wound healing and to facilitate the integration of implantable medical devices. Most frequently, tissue adhesives are applied as a gel or a liquid formulation. This manuscript ...

Locally applied bisphosphonates, such as Zoledronate, have been shown in several studies to inhibit peri-implant bone resorption and recently to enhance peri-implant bone formation. Studies have also demonstrated positive effects of hydroxyapatite particle ...

In an attempt to increase the life of cementless prostheses, an hydroxyapatite-coated implant which releases a bisphosphonate has been suggested as a drug-delivery system. Our in vitro study was designed to determine the maximum dose to which osteoblasts c ...

Cell therapy for nucleus pulposus regeneration is an attractive treatment for early disc degeneration as shown by studies using autologous nucleus pulposus cells or stem cells. Another potential source of cells is fetal cells. We investigated the feasibili ...
