In this article, a soft-switched nonisolated high step-up multi-input dc-dc converter is proposed. The proposed converter has overcome the hard switching problem of the conventional boost three port converter (boost-TPC) by providing zero-voltage-switching ...

The increasing complexity of signal processing algorithms has lead to the need of developing the algorithms specifications using generic software implementations that become in practice the reference implementation. This fact can be particularly observed in the field of video and multimedia processing where reference software is the main normative reference. Adapting the algorithms specified by such software models into architectures composed by processors and dedicated HW elements becomes a very resource c

Recently, ISO/IEC standardized a dataflow-programming framework called Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) for the specification of video codecs. The RVC framework aims at providing the specification of a system at a high abstraction level so that the functi ...

The efficient implementation of multimedia algorithms, for the ever increasing complexity of the specifications and the emergence of the new generation of processing platforms characterized by multicore and multicomponent parallel architectures, requires appropriate design space exploration procedures as preliminary step for any implementation. This paper describes a new platform aiming at supporting the algorithm and architecture co-exploration starting by a pure software specification that is gradually trans

The problem of partitioning a dataflow program onto a target architecture is a difficult challenge for any application design. In general, since the problem is NP-complete, it consists of looking for high quality solutions in terms of maximizing the achiev ...

Nowadays, the design flow of complex signal processing embedded systems starts with a specification of the application by means of a large and sequential program (usually in C/C++). As we are entering in the multicore era, sequential programs are no longer the most appropriate way to specify algorithms targeted to run on several processing units. The new ISO/MPEG Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) standard is proposing a new paradigm for specifying and designing complex signal processing systems. The RVC sta

Large dataflow designs appear as a result of functional specification of modern complex digital systems and/ or a result of unfolding and behavioral transformation of looped and branched programs. Since deep-submicron silicon technology provides large amou ...

The development and progress of high-throughput sequencing technologies have transformed the sequencing of DNA from a scientific research challenge to practice. With the release of the latest generation of sequencing machines, the cost of sequencing a whol ...

Video coding technology has evolved in the past years into a variety of diff erent and complex algorithms. So far the specifications of such standard algorithms have been done case by case, providing monolithic textual and reference software specifications, ...

The current monolithic and lengthy scheme behind the standardization and the design of new video coding standards is becoming inappropriate to satisfy the dynamism and changing needs of the video coding community. Such a scheme and specification formalism do not enable designers to exploit the clear commonalities between the different codecs, neither at the level of the specification nor at the level of the implementation. Such a problem is one of the main reasons for the typical long time interval elapsing

This paper presents shared-variable synchronization approaches for dataflow programming. The mechanisms do not require any substantial model of computation (MoC) modification, and is portable across both for hardware (HW) and software (SW) low-level code s ...

The implementation of software based video/audio decoders is an advantageous solution over traditional dedicated hardware systems. However, simultaneously guaranteeing real-time performance, needed for processing video/audio bit-streams, and an efficient use of the processing power, remains a very difficult task. In this paper, we briefly discuss the main reasons of such difficulties and we present a new technique able to predict the decoding time of compressed video bit-streams without the need of the actu

Video coding technology has evolved in the past years into a variety of different and complex algorithms. So far the specification of such standard algorithms has been done case by case providing monolithic textual and reference SW specifications, but with ...

The designs fabrication and testing of low-cost readout electronics for piezoresistive MEMS-based transducers are presented in this paper. The proposed circuit architecture has a low input referred noise power spectral density of 60nV/root Hz a latency of ...

Signal processing designs are becoming increasingly complex with demands for more advanced algorithms. Designers are now seeking high-level tools and methodology to help manage complexity and increase productivity. Recently, CAL dataflow language has been ...

This paper describes a new co-processor architecture designed for CMOS sensor imaging. The co-processor unit is integrated into the image acquisition loop so as to exploit the full potential of CMOS selective access imaging technology. The processing features of the coprocessor are functional to the specific acquisition process of CMOS sensors (random region acquisition, variable image size, variable acquisition modes line/region based, multi-exposition images). Moreover, although built with pipelined or pa

This paper addresses the inter-operability problem of multimedia terminal in media content delivery over heterogeneous networks and devices. We design and implement a terminal which includes a content browser providing presentation, navigation and interact ...

This chapter presents a new development of rapid prototyping tools for system design based on data-flow specifications. In this context, the efficiency of tools for the automatic translation from the data-flow programs to C and/or HDL are assessed by means of two design cases. The chapter also introduces the new concept of the automatic synthesis of interfaces. Such generic interfaces are implemented by using an embedded microprocessor, which can support a large variety of interfaces already available as na
