Stream processing has a long history as a way of describing and implementing specific kinds of computational processes. So far, however, it has largely remained an exotic field of endeavor, with relatively small momentum compared to traditional von Neumann computing, and a large variety of programming models, languages, tools, and hardware realizations. However, as sequential machines cease to become faster over time, and future growth in computational speed will clearly derive from an increase in parallelism

This paper presents a methodology to perform design space exploration of complex signal processing systems implemented using the CAL dataflow language. In the course of space exploration, critical path in dataflow programs is first presented, and then anal ...

In this paper, an efficient H.264/AVC baseline encoder, described in RVC-CAL actor language, is introduced. The main aim of the paper is two folds: a) to demonstrate the flexibility and ease that is provided by RVC-CAL, which allows for efficient implement ...

Maximizing the data throughput is a very common implementation objective for several streaming applications. Such task is particularly challenging for implementations based on many-core and multi-core target platforms because, in general, it implies tackli ...

This paper presents an energy and area efficient capacitively-coupled chopper instrumentation amplifier (CCIA) dedicated to implantable bridge sensor systems. Chopper stabilization is employed to decrease its offset and 1/f noise and the resulting ripple d ...

This paper presents a real-time adaptive video streaming system based on the latest standardized video codec H.264/MPEG-4 AVC scalable extension (SVC). The system provides a full MPEG-21 media access framework over heterogeneous networks and terminals with ...

Traditional media, such as text, image, audio and video, have long been the main media resources and granted full support of standard desktop tools and applications. Interactive rich multimedia documents, adding resources such as video or synthetic animati ...

Current video coding standards, and their reference implementations, are architected as large monolithic and sequential algorithms, in spite of the considerable overlap of functionality between standards, and the fact that they are frequently implemented on highly parallel computing platforms. The former leads to unnecessary complexity in the standardization process, while the latter implies that imple- mentations have to be rebuilt from the ground up to reflect the parallel nature of the target. The upcomi

Traditional design and test of complex multimedia systems involves a large number of test vectors and is a difficult and time-consuming task. The simulation times are prohibitively long on current desktop computers. Driving actual design scenarios and timing burst behavior which produce real-time effects is difficult to do with current simulation environments. This paper describes a rapid emulation framework for accessing multiple hardware IP blocks on an FPGA. This solution involves an abstraction of the F

Video coding technology has evolved in the past years into a variety of different and complex algorithms. So far the specification of such standard algorithms has been done case by case providing monolithic textual and reference SW specifications, but with ...

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as a decentralized proof of ownership represent one of the main reasons why Ethereum is a disruptive technology. This paper presents the first systematic study of the interactions occurring in a number of NFT ecosystems. We illus ...

The standardization efforts of MPEG in video coding, originally had as main objective to guarantee interoperability of compression systems. This carried with it the possibility to reach another important objective, namely to wide and easy deployment of implementations of those standards. While at the beginning MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 were only specified by textual descriptions, with the increasing complexity of video coding tools, starting with the MPEG-4 set of standards, C or C++ specifications, called referen

Heterogeneous parallel systems are becoming mainstream computing platforms nowadays. One of the main challenges the development community is currently facing is how to fully exploit the available computational power when porting existing programs or developing new ones with available techniques. In this direction, several design space exploration methods have been presented and extensively adopted. However, defining the feasible design space of a dynamic dataflow program still remains an open issue. This pa

The performance of programs written in languages following the dataflow model of computation (MoC) largely depends on the configuration (partitioning, mapping, scheduling, buffer dimensioning) chosen during the synthesis stages. Furthermore, this programmi ...

In recent years, the number and variety of heterogeneous multiprocessor system-on-chip MPSoCs, such as for instance Zynq platforms, has sensibly increased. However, today all design flow solutions capable of programming the different components of such pla ...

The growing complexity of signal processing algorithms and platforms poses significant challenges to design methods and implementation tools. High-level dataflow programs, such as those in MPEG's RVC-CAL language, provide abstraction and the opportunity fo ...

The increasing complexity in particular of video and multimedia processing has lead to the need of developing the algorithms specification using software implementations that become in practice generic reference implementations. Mapping directly such software models in platforms made of processors and dedicated HW elements becomes harder and harder for the complexity of the models and for the large choice of possible partitioning options. This paper describes a new platform aiming at supporting the mapping

Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is referred to as a multimedia streaming standard to deliver high quality multimedia content over the Internet using conventional HTTP Web servers. As a fundamental feature, it enables automatic switching of qual ...

This paper presents the OpenDF framework and recalls that dataflow programming was once invented to address the problem of parallel computing. We discuss the problems with an imperative style, von Neumann programs, and present what we believe are the advanta ...

This paper presents an analysis of the role of social media, specifically Twitter, in the context of non-fungible tokens, better known as NFTs. Such emerging technology framing the creation and exchange of digital object, started years ago with early proje ...
