In cryptography, side channel attacks, such as power analysis, attempt to uncover secret information from the physical implementation of cryptosystems rather than exploiting weaknesses in the cryptographic algorithms themselves. The design and implementation of physically secure cryptosystems is a challenge for both hardware and software designers. Measuring and evaluating the security of a system is manual and empirical, which is costly and time consuming; this work demonstrates that it is possible to auto

Due to increased embedded processing requirements, modern SoCs are becoming heterogeneous computing platforms by combining traditional processing units with custom reconfigurable hardware accelerators (HAs) on an FPGA fabric. However, efficiently managing ...

With FPGAs facing broader application domains, the conversion of imperative languages into dataflow circuits has been recently revamped as a way to overcome the conservatism of statically scheduled high-level synthesis. Apart from the ability to extract pa ...

To achieve resource-efficient hardware designs, high-level synthesis (HLS) tools share (i.e., time-multiplex) functional units among operations of the same type. This optimization is typically performed in conjunction with operation scheduling to ensure th ...

In this paper, we present an FPGA synthesis flow based on Majority-Inverter Graph (MIG). An MIG is a directed acyclic graph consisting of three-input majority nodes and regular/complemented edges. MIG manipulation is supported by a consistent alge ...

Fixed-point arithmetic leads to efficient implementations. However, the optimization process required to size each of the implementation signals can be prohibitively complex. In this paper, we introduce a new divide-and-conquer method that is able to appro ...

Modern FPGAs integrate High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), offering up to 12× the DDR bandwidth distributed across multiple memory interfaces. To utilize the most of HBM's theoretical bandwidth, accelerators typically issue long bursts and exploit data locality. ...

Circuits naturally exhibit recurring patterns of local interconnect. Hardening those patterns when designing Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) clusters can both eliminate slow programmable connections from the critical path and remove the need for trans ...

Listing all maximal cliques of a given graph has important applications in the analysis of social and biological networks. Parallelisation of maximal clique enumeration (MCE) algorithms on modern manycore processors is challenging due to the task-level par ...

Variable block size motion estimation (VBSME) in state-of-the-art video coding standards is one of the key features which improves the coding efficiency significantly compared to the previous standards. VBSME hardware design is a challenging task due to it ...

Applications such as large-scale sparse linear algebra and graph analytics are challenging to accelerate on FPGAs due to the short irregular memory accesses, resulting in low cache hit rates. Nonblocking caches reduce the bandwidth required by misses by re ...

The effective bandwidth of the FPGA external memory, usually DRAM, is extremely sensitive to the access pattern. Nonblocking caches that handle thousands of outstanding misses (miss-optimized memory systems) can dynamically improve bandwidth utilization wh ...

In recent years, there has been a trend towards reconfigurable fabrics at the intersection between field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and coarse-grained reconfigurable arrays (CGRAs): using FPGA-like interconnect but word-based and built around coarse-grained primitives. These architectures often employ complex clusters with far more heterogeneous resources than FPGAs or typical CGRAssometimes over a hundred primitives, most of which are bypassable. As a result, clustering, the problem of covering the a

In this work, we develop timing-driven CAD support for FPGA architectures with direct connections between LUTs. We do so by proposing an efficient ILP-based detailed placer, which moves a carefully selected subset of LUTs from their original positions, so ...

Automated switch-block exploration gains in importance as technology scaling brings more emphasis on the physical constraints, making it insufficient to rely on abstract measures of routability alone. In this work, we take an approach that significantly di ...

Dynamically scheduled HLS, through dataflow circuit generation, has proven successful at exploiting operation-level parallelism in several important situations where statically scheduled HLS fails. Yet, although existing dataflow circuits support out-of-or ...

The selective use of carry-save arithmetic, where appropriate, can accelerate a variety of arithmetic-dominated circuits. Carry-save arithmetic occurs naturally in a variety of DSP applications, and further opportunities to exploit it can be exposed throug ...

Hardware designers and engineers typically need to explore a multi-parametric design space in order to find the best configuration for their designs using simulations that can take weeks to months to complete. For example, designers of special purpose chips ...

Nanoelectromechanical (NEM) relays are a promising emerging technology that has gained widespread research attention due to its zero leakage current, sharp ON-OFF transitions, and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatibility. As a result, NEM rela ...

Hybrid flash architectures combine static partitions in Sing le Level Cell (SLC) mode with partitions in Multi Level Cell (MLC) mode. Compared to MLC-only solutions, the former exploits fast and short random writes while the latter brings large capacity. O ...
