Why Do Companies Need Operational Flexibility to Achieve Sustainability at Source?

We analyze the environmental benefits of operational flexibility that emerge in the form of less product waste during the sourcing process by reducing overproduction. We consider three different options for operational flexibility: (1) lead-time reduction, ...

Optimization Method for Extracting Stabilizer Geometry and Properties of REBCO Tapes

Bertrand Dutoit, Francesco Grilli, Nicolo' Riva, Arooj Akbar

A good knowledge of material properties is a critical aspect for modeling high-temperature superconductor (HTS) devices. However, the electrical resistivity of coated conductors above the critical current is limited. The major challenge in characterizing t ...

Nonreciprocity in Uniform Time-Varying Materials Using Spatial Dispersion

Xiaoqiang Wang

Conventionally, nonreciprocity in time-varying systems is achieved by exploiting both temporal and spatial modulations. In this paper, we introduce a concept of magnetless bianisotropic time-modulated systems that support nonreciprocal wave propagation at ...

A synchrotron X-ray imaging strategy to map large animal brains

Giorgio Margaritondo

Mapping the large neural networks of animal and human brains is a fundamental but so far elusive task, because of the massive amount of data and the consequent prohibitively long image taking and processing times. We developed an effective strategy called ...

Affine Combination of Diffusion Strategies Over Networks

Ali H. Sayed

Diffusion adaptation is a powerful strategy for distributed estimation and learning over networks. Motivated by the concept of combining adaptive filters, this work proposes a combination framework that aggregates the operation of multiple diffusion strate ...

Chipscale soliton microcombs

Tobias Kippenberg

Optical frequency combs provide equidistant frequency markers and have applications that encompass fundamental Physics to Engineering. This tutorial will review the fundamental operational principles and latest development in the field of soliton microreso ...

The Optimal Memory-Rate Trade-Off for the Non-Uniform Centralized Caching Problem With Two Files Under Uncoded Placement

Michael Christoph Gastpar, Saeid Sahraei, Pierre Victor Xavier Quinton

A new scheme for the problem of centralized coded caching with non-uniform demands is proposed. The distinguishing feature of the proposed placement strategy is that it admits equal sub-packetization for all files while allowing the users to allocate more ...

Exploitation of Unconventional Electrophiles in Enantioselective Pd(0)-Catalyzed C-H Functionalizations

Nicolai Cramer, Daria Grosheva

Asymmetric metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization is a powerful strategy for the rapid generation of complex target molecules from simple precursors. While aryl (pseudo) halides have been used as electrophilic substrates in enantioselective Pd(0)-catalyzed ...

Analysis of the sensitivity of the hydromorphological index of diversity, HMID

Anton Schleiss, Mário Jorge Rodrigues Pereira Da Franca, Severin Stähly, Walter Gostner

Hydromorphological conditions are a key factor for the habitat diversity in riverine ecosystems. The Hydromorphological Index of Diversity (HMID) is a tool to quantify the habitat diversity in a river reach based on local flow depths and flow velocities. T ...

A greedy non-intrusive reduced order model for fluid dynamics

Jan Sickmann Hesthaven

We introduce a greedy non-intrusive reduced order method(ROM) for parameterized time-dependent problems with an emphasis on problems in fluid dynamics. The non-intrusive ROM is based on two-level proper orthogonal decomposition(POD) to extract temporal and ...

CsPbBr3 QD/AlOx inorganic nanocomposites with exceptional stability in water, light and heat

Raffaella Buonsanti, Emad Oveisi, Duncan Thomas Lindsay Alexander, Anna Loiudice, Seryio Saris

Herein, the assembly of CsPbBr3 QD/AlOx inorganic nanocomposites, by using atomic layer deposition (ALD) for the growth of the amorphous alumina matrix (AlOx), is described as a novel protection scheme for such QDs. The nucleation and growth of AlOx on the ...

On the analytic-numeric treatment of weakly singular integrals on arbitrary polygonal domains

Juan Ramon Mosig, Sergio Lopez Pena, Athanasios Polymeridis

An alternative analytical approach to calculate the weakly singular free-space static potential integral associated to uniform sources is presented. Arbitrary oriented flat polygons are considered as integration domains. The technique stands out by its mat ...

Three-dimensional (3D) polypyrrole microstructures with high aspect ratios fabricated by localized electropolymerization

Giorgio Margaritondo

We present the three-dimensional (3D) growth of polypyrrole (PPy) microstructures with high aspect ratios (HAR) by a localized electropolymerization. The radicals formed by an oxidation of Py monomer is localized on the targeting area due to a confinement ...

A new look at atomic broadcast in the asynchronous crash-recovery model

André Schiper, Sergio Mena

Atomic broadcast in particular, and group communication in general, have mainly been specified and implemented in a system model where processes do not recover after a crash. The model is called crash-stop. The drawback of this model is its inability to ex ...

Probe measurements of plasma potential nonuniformity due to edge asymmetry in large-area radio-frequency reactors: the telegraph effect

Christoph Hollenstein, Alan Howling, Laurent Fabien Hubert Sansonnens, Hannes Schmidt, Lukas Derendinger

In large-area radio-frequency (rf) capacitive reactors, the redistribution of rf current to maintain current continuity near asymmetric sidewalls causes a perturbation in rf plasma potential to propagate along the resistive plasma between capacitive sheath ...
