We study a model for the initial state of the universe based on a gravitational path integral that includes connected geometries which simultaneously produce bra and ket of the wave function. We argue that a natural object to describe this state is the Wig ...

A measurement is presented of the primary Lund jet plane (LJP) density in inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions. The analysis uses 138 fb(-1) of data collected by the CMS experiment at root s = 13TeV. The LJP, a representation of the phase s ...

In this paper, we study sampling from a posterior derived from a neural network. We propose a new probabilistic model consisting of adding noise at every pre- and post-activation in the network, arguing that the resulting posterior can be sampled using an ...

A search for the production of long-lived particles in proton- proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeVat the CERN LHC is presented. The search is based on data collected by the CMS experiment in 2016-2018, corresponding to a total integrated ...

The Large Charge sector of Conformal Field Theory (CFT) can generically be described through a semiclassical expansion around a superfluid background. In this work, focussing on U(1) invariant Wilson-Fisher fixed points, we study the spectrum of spinning l ...

Through a physics-based model framework, the authors propose a central role for the nonequilibrium processes underling gene activity in shaping morphology, dynamics, and regulation of diverse nuclear condensates. Condensation by phase separation has recent ...

The log law of the wall, joining the inner, near-wall mean velocity profile (MVP) in wall-bounded turbulent flows to the outer region, has been a permanent fixture of turbulence research for over hundred years, but there is still no general agreement on th ...

We find the conditions under which scale-invariant Einstein-Cartan gravity with scalar matter fields leads to an approximate conformal invariance of the flat space particle theory up to energies of the order of the Planck mass. In the minimal setup, these ...

Janus membranes, thin permeable structures with chemical and geometrical asymmetric properties, show great potential in industrial separation processes. Yet the link between the micro- and macro-scale behaviours of these membranes needs to be established r ...

The stochastic block model (SBM) is widely studied as a benchmark for graph clustering aka community detection. In practice, graph data often come with node attributes that bear additional information about the communities. Previous works modeled such data ...

In this thesis, we propose model order reduction techniques for high-dimensional PDEs that preserve structures of the original problems and develop a closure modeling framework leveraging the Mori-Zwanzig formalism and recurrent neural networks. Since high ...

Expectiles define the only law-invariant, coherent and elicitable risk measure apart from the expectation. The popularity of expectile-based risk measures is steadily growing and their properties have been studied for independent data, but further results ...

Quantum Field Theory(QFT) as one of the most promising frameworks to study high energy and condensed matter physics, has been mostly developed by perturbative methods. However, perturbative methods can only capture a small island of the space of QFTs. QFT ...

With wind power providing an increasing amount of electricity worldwide, the quantification of its spatio-temporal variations and the related uncertainty is crucial for energy planners and policy-makers. Here, we propose a methodological framework which (1 ...

Steep streams involve shallow, supercritical turbulent flows over a permeable bed made up of coarse particles. They usually exhibit higher flow resistance and stronger mass and momentum exchanges between the stream and subsurface flow than low-gradient str ...

In this letter, we discuss certain universal predictions of the large charge expansion in conformal field theories with U (1) symmetry, mainly focusing on four-dimensional theories. We show that, while in three dimensions quantum fluctuations are responsib ...

In several domains of physics, including first principle simulations and classical models for polarizable systems, the minimization of an energy function with respect to a set of auxiliary variables must be performed to define the dynamics of physical degr ...

In this paper, we propose algorithms that leverage a known community structure to make group testing more efficient. We consider a population organized in disjoint communities: each individual participates in a community, and its infection probability depe ...

Efficient sampling of complex high-dimensional probability distributions is a central task in computational science. Machine learning methods like autoregressive neural networks, used with Markov chain Monte Carlo sampling, provide good approximations to s ...

We calculate the rate of collisional decay of the axial charge in an ultrarelativistic electron-positron plasma, also known as the chirality flipping rate. We find that contrary to the existing estimates, the chirality flipping rate appears already in the ...
