Acute kidney failure and chronic kidney disease are global health issues steadily rising in incidence and prevalence. Animal models on a single genetic background have so far failed to recapitulate the clinical presentation of human nephropathies. Here, we ...

Disruption of mitochondrial function and protein homeostasis plays a central role in aging. However, how these processes interact and what governs their failure in aging remain poorly understood. Here, we showed that cer- amide biosynthesis controls the de ...

The accumulation of ceramides and related metabolites has emerged as a pivotal mechanism contributing to the onset of age-related diseases. However, small molecule inhibitors targeting the ceramide de novo synthesis pathway for clinical use are currently u ...

Inflammatory gut disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), can be impacted by dietary, environmental, and genetic factors. While the incidence of IBD is increasing worldwide, we still lack a complete understanding of the gene-by-environment in ...

The most common reported epidemic time series in epidemiological surveillance are the daily or weekly incidence of new cases, the hospital admission count, the ICU admission count, and the death toll, which played such a prominent role in the struggle to m ...

The sanitary crisis of the past two years has focused the public's attention on quantitative indicators of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The daily reproduction number R-t, defined by the average number of new infections caused by a single infected i ...

The metallome is crucial for normal cell functioning but remains largely overlooked in mammals. Here the authors analyze the metallome and copper and zinc isotope compositions in aging mice and show networks of interactions that are organ-specific, age-dep ...

Nori is a component of the traditional Japanese diet. The Japanese have a low prevalence of obesity and cardiovascular disease worldwide, and components of nori may have disease-preventive effects. Here, we focused on porphyran, which is abundant in nori t ...

ObjectiveImproving mitochondrial function is a promising strategy for intervention in type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study investigated the preventive effects of sodium ferrous citrate (SFC) and 5-aminolevulinic acid phosphate (ALA) on several metabolic dy ...

The COVID-19 pandemic has undergone frequent and rapid changes in its local and global infection rates, driven by governmental measures or the emergence of new viral variants. The reproduction number Rt indicates the average number of cases generated by an ...

Author summaryForecasting the short time evolution of the COVID-19 daily incidence is a key issue in the epidemic decision making policy. We propose a machine learning method which forecasts the future values of the daily incidence trend based on the evolu ...

Susceptibility to metabolic syndrome (MetS) is dependent on genetics, environment, and gene-by-environment interactions, rendering the study of underlying mechanisms challenging. The majority of experiments in model organisms do not incorporate genetic var ...

Mice from different genetic backgrounds have widely diverse responses to the same metabolic challenges. Only PWK/PhJ mice show significant mitochondrial dysfunction and progression to fibrotic NASH that resembles human NASH. The PWK/PhJ strain is a novel N ...
