Mechanical watches are generally regulated by a balance and a spring constituting a harmonic oscillator. This mechanism is intrinsically force-balanced, which makes it essentially insensitive to gravity as well as to the linear accelerations of the watch. ...

The balancing of mechanisms consists in distributing their moving masses, inertias, and elastic components in order to achieve key mechanical properties, such as the elimination of the shaking forces and moments exported onto their supporting structure or ...

Mechanisms such as those used in space applications, robotics, micro-electromechanical systems or watchmaking must meet strict environmental specifications related to thermal exchanges, electromagnetic exchanges, radiation resistance, vacuum compatibility, ...

Buckled beams have become key building blocks in compliant mechanisms to achieve nonlinear behaviors, such as bistability, constant-force and stiffness tuning. However, designing and modeling such components is challenging due to their highly nonlinear cha ...

Binary logic gates are building blocks of computing machines, in particular, electronic computers. One variant is the programable logic gate, also known as the reconfigurable logic gate, in which the logical function implemented can be modified. In this pa ...

Despite centuries of research and significant advances, the escapement mechanism used to count and maintain oscillations of mechanical time bases remains a complex mechanism and a major source of energy losses. We showed in previous work that, instead of t ...

The balancing of mechanisms consists in distributing their moving masses, inertias, and elastic components in order to achieve key mechanical properties, such as the insensitivity of the mechanism to gravity and to the motions of its chassis, or the elimin ...

Typical flexure-based XY-stages have a serial design, and their layout results in the flexures being loaded in flection in face of heavy payloads or vertical loads. This paper presents a design with zero parasitic shift in which all flexures are loaded in ...

Sensor system (1) comprising a frame (306) supporting a force-sensing tip (310) arranged to generate a signal based upon a force applied by said force-sensing tip (310) to a material to be tested, characterised in that said system (1) further comprises:- an ...

We present a new mechanical oscillator architecture that can be made insensitive to linear and angular accelerations while keeping constant oscillation frequency. The oscillator has the kinematics of a Watt linkage, so we call it a Watt oscillator. In orde ...

In this paper, we present an experimental evaluation of tactile feedback for remote needle insertion in soft tissues. A needle with tip force sensing is used to detect changes of tissues and puncture events during insertion. This information is provided to ...

The flywheel is a widespread mechanical component used for the storage of kinetic energy and angular momentum. It typically consists of cylindrical inertia rotating about its axis on rolling bearings, which involves undesired friction, lubrication, and wea ...

A micromachined mechanism (5) for a sensing tool (1), the mechanism comprising a support, a probe, pivotally mounted with respect to the support, a beam (10) connected to the support (8), and the probe, the probe (9) being intended to apply a load (Ftool) ...

Binary logic operations are the building blocks of computing machines. In this paper, we present a new programmable binary logic gate based on programmable multistable mechanisms (PMM), which are multistable structures whose stability behavior depends on m ...

This article describes a novel method for applying a contact force in the range of 1 to 100 μN with pointed probe on a microscale sample in order to perform ohmic electrical measurements. The solution is based on the new TIVOT active load cell combining th ...

This paper presents a novel planar four-bar linkage compliant mechanism (called 4-RCC) based on four flexure-based Remote Center of Compliance (RCC) pivots. With particular configurations and dimensions, the beam shortening of the RCC pivots can compensate ...

The invention relates to a system (13) for moving a lying patient (P) from a first position to a second position according to a controlled motion comprising a back sheet, a front sheet, each comprising two lateral edges (L1, L2). The system (13) comprises ...

Flexure mechanism (1) comprising:- an end effector (3) arranged to be able to move in a first plane (XY);- an intermediate stage (7) linked to said end effector (3) by means of at least three first beams (5) extending substantially perpendicular to said fi ...
