The building envelope acts as a shield against varying weather conditions and modulates thermal energy flow between outdoors and indoors. The choice of layers used in the assembly impacts the heat loss and gain through the wall structure and potentially ca ...

Radiant floor heating is widely recognized for its low-energy consumption and high efficiency. Traditional systems, however, typically heat the entire floor area within a space, conditioning spaces uniformly regardless of occupancy. This study investigates ...

Assessing and optimizing human indoor comfort is challenging as physiological, psychological, and environmental variables influence it. Therefore, it is crucial to understand variability of human physiological parameters and underlying mechanisms. Metaboli ...

Sensing and projecting an individual’s human thermal comfort in buildings is a complex but crucial task for transitioning toward human-centered indoor climate control. Non-intrusive collection of physiological and personal information from the human body, ...

For many decades, ventilated cavities in wall assemblies of buildings have been essential for creating moisture resilient constructions by allowing airflow within the air gap to promote drying. In addition to that, the airflow in the cavity can enhance the ...

Despite space heating and cooling, the energy use for hot water production has not changed significantly over time and accounts for a big share in modern, well-insulated buildings. The main challenge of hot water generation lies in the highly stochastic na ...

A spatially and directionally resolved longwave and shortwave radiant heat transfer model is presented via a series of experiments in a thermal lab to input surface temperatures and geometries, as well as skin temperature readings from a human subject, in ...

A significant corpus of research has shown that occupant behaviour is a key factor of uncertainty when predicting building energy use. Building occupants affect energy use directly and indirectly by regulating their indoor environment according to their co ...

Dynamic human energy expenditure (EE) consists of energy costs for resting metabolism, food digestion, physical activity, and thermoregulation. Currently, multiple models predict EE mainly concerning physical activity, thus, discarding other factors contri ...

Metabolic rate is one of the main parameters affecting the thermal balance of the human body and perception of thermal comfort. Typically, we consider a constant value for a specific type of activity (sitting quiet, standing, etc.) despite the time of the ...

The application of Personal Comfort Systems (PCS) in the buildings demonstrated their potential to improve thermal comfort and reduce energy use by the space conditioning HVAC systems. With its personal controllability (on-demand) PCS is a practical soluti ...

This study presents a novel set-up for desiccant-based cooling and dehumidification systems. In this cycle, a solid desiccant and conventional combined cooling and power (CCP) systems, based on the ejector refrigeration cycle (ERC) and the organic Rankine ...

This simulation-based study aimed to contribute to gaining knowledge on how much the deviation between occupant-related input by the national standard and by insitu measurements might impact predictions of heating/cooling needs in offices. Analysis was per ...

Evaporative cooling systems consume high water, but low electricity for their operation. On the other hand, vapor compression systems consume no water, but high electricity. Water and energy systems are interconnected at different levels. Therefore, water ...

The role of occupants and their interactions with the building envelope and systems represent a key factor of uncertainty when predicting building energy use with simulation tools. The aim of this simulation-based study is to contribute to gaining further ...

Professionals in the building design and operation fields typically look at standards and guidelines as a reliable source of information and guidance with regard to procedural, contractual, and legal scope and requirements that are relevant to accountabili ...

The common placement of thermostats in offices might not reflect the actual thermal environment around occupants and influence the energy use. In this research, it is questioned which type of thermostat at which location better represents the conditions in ...

Buildings’ expected (projected, simulated) energy use frequently does not match actual observations. This is commonly referred to as the energy performance gap. As such, many factors can contribute to the disagreement between expectations and observations. ...

A specific range of acceptable indoor thermal conditions is stipulated by building performance standards to assure minimum dissatisfaction of occupants. Thus, the operation of buildings in practice tends to follow a cautious approach by setting the indoor ...
