A well-designed ventilated wall that incorporates air-space behind cladding can reduce energy use for conditioning buildings by adding a thermally resistive layer. The scarcity of thermal performance data and standardized test methods is a particular barri ...

Occupant behavior is a highly stochastic phenomenon, which is known as a key challenge for the optimal control of residential energy systems. With the increasing share of renewable energy in the building sector, the volatile nature of renewable energy is a ...

Occupants' behavior is a major source of uncertainty for the optimal operation of building energy systems. The highly stochastic hot water use behavior of occupants has led to conservative operational strategies for hot water systems, that try to ensure oc ...

Personalised Environmental Control Systems (PECS) have emerged as a solution to customise thermal conditions at individual workstations, potentially reducing overall energy consumption. However, their energy performance under diverse building operating con ...

Defining indoor environmental conditions that meet the needs and preferences of occupants in open space offices can be challenging since the same space might be occupied by people with different individual needs and preferences regarding what constitutes a ...

The presence of an air-space within a building envelope is known to have a varying contribution to the overall thermal performance of the wall assembly due to the combined effect of convection and radiation in the air cavity. In particular, the thermal res ...

The traditional sequential design of building elements, where every element performs only one dedicated function, carries significant embodied energy. Thus, modular pre-fabricated load-bearing elements could overcome the disadvantages of the current carbon ...

A ventilated air-space behind external claddings can potentially affect the thermal performance of the entire building structure. In particular, in the Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) facades, ventilated cavities are typically present between the P ...

ObjectivesThis study compared the metabolic and vascular responses, to whole-body and finger cold exposure, of a traditional population lifelong exposed to extreme cold winters with Western Europeans. MethodsThirteen cold acclimatized Tuvan pastoralist adu ...

The variation of the thermo-hydrodynamic behavior of the airflow in the ventilated cavity behind external claddings in a wall structure could potentially affect the overall thermal resistance of the entire structure. Although the impact of an enclosed air- ...

Human thermo-physiology models (HTPM) are useful tools to assess dynamic and non-uniform human thermal states. However, they are developed based on the physiological data of an average person. In this paper, we present a detailed evaluation of two sophisti ...

European energy policies are aimed at increasing the climate resilience of infrastructure, including new and existing buildings. The implications of future ambient conditions on the energy and environmental performance in buildings and respective adaptatio ...

Carbon dioxide generated by the human body and exhaled (VCO2) is commonly used for ventilation controls, while the metabolic rate (i.e., energy expenditure EE) is an important parameter defining human thermal comfort in buildings. These two parameters are ...

Space heating controls in offices usually follow static schedules detached from actual occupancy, which results in energy waste by unnecessarily heating vacant offices. The uniqueness of stochastic occupancy profile and thermal response time of each office ...

Modular multifunctional building elements can overcome major disadvantages of the traditional sequential design and become prospective design solutions for sustainable construction. Thus, this work explores lightweight glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) ...

The walls in a building envelope have the largest contact area with the exterior environment, and, therefore, a considerable portion of the thermal energy can be lost through the walls compared to the other parts of the building envelope. For energy-saving ...

Building energy modelling is an indispensable component of today’s design method. However, as per research findings, real-life buildings could utilize almost twice the amount of their ideal energy performance. Thus, it is important to understand the variat ...

As personal environmental control systems (PECS) gain prominence over conventional whole-space conditioning, accurately predicting personalized and localized thermal sensation (TS) becomes increasingly important. This study systematically evaluates the rel ...

Radiant systems allowing high-temperature cooling have been considered energy-efficient solutions for indoor climatization. In addition, radiant systems prevent local discomfort, such as air movement and vertical air temperature difference. However, the ap ...

The perception, physiology, behavior, and performance of building occupants are influenced by multi-domain exposures: the simultaneous presence of multiple environmental stimuli, i.e., visual, thermal, acoustic, and air quality. Despite being extensive, th ...
