Rodent models are decisive for translational research in healthy and pathological conditions of motor function thanks to specific similarities with humans. Here, we present an upgraded version of the M-Platform, a robotic device previously designed to trai ...

Research on biosignal (ExG) analysis is usually performed with expensive systems requiring connection with external computers for data processing. Consumer-grade low-cost wearable systems for bio-potential monitoring and embedded processing have been prese ...

Rehabilitation is considered the most effective treatment for promoting the recovery of motor deficits after stroke. One of the most challenging experimental goals is to unambiguously link brain rewiring to motor improvement prompted by rehabilitative ther ...

Engineered grafts constitute an alternative to autologous transplant for repairing severe peripheral nerve injuries. However, current clinically available solutions have substantial limitations and are not suited for the repair of long nerve defects. A nov ...

Contrary to cats and primates, cortical contribution to hindlimb locomotor movements is not critical in rats. However, the importance of the motor cortex to regain locomotion after neurological disorders in rats suggests that cortical engagement in hindlim ...

Objective: Brain-body interfaces (BBIs) have emerged as a very promising solution for restoring voluntary hand control in people with upper-limb paralysis. The BBI module decoding motor commands from brain signals should provide the user with intuitive, ac ...

Walking patterns of persons affected by cerebellar ataxia (CA) are characterized by wide stride-to-stride variability ascribable to: the background pathology-related sensory-motor noise; the motor redundancy, i.e., an excess of elemental degrees of freedom ...

Objective. This study aims to design and implement the first deep learning (DL) model to classify subjects in the prodromic states of Alzheimer's disease (AD) based on resting-state electroencephalographic (EEG) signals. Approach. EEG recordings of 17 heal ...

Electrical neuromodulation of lumbar segments improves motor control after spinal cord injury in animal models and humans. However, the physiological principles underlying the effect of this intervention remain poorly understood, which has limited the ther ...

Severe Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) alters the communication between supra-spinal centers and the sensorimotor networks coordinating limb movements, which are usually located below the injury. Epidural electrical stimulation of lumbar segments has shown the ab ...

The neural stimulation of the vagus nerve is able to modulate various functions of the parasympathetic response in different organs. The stimulation of the vagus nerve is a promising approach to treating inflammatory diseases, obesity, diabetes, heart fail ...

Myoelectric prostheses allow users to recover lost functionality by controlling a robotic device with their remaining muscle activity. Such commercial devices can give users a high level of autonomy, but still do not approach the dexterity of the intact hu ...

The spinal cord is the main interface between the brain and the periphery. It notably plays a central role in motor control, as spinal motoneurons activate skeletal muscles involved in voluntary movements. Yet, the spinal mechanisms underlying human moveme ...

A spinal cord injury usually spares some components of the locomotor circuitry. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the midbrain locomotor region and epidural electrical stimulation of the lumbar spinal cord (EES) are being used to tap into this spared circuit ...

Recent research demonstrates that naïve users can be trained to perform complex motor tasks, including trimanual activities, using an extra robotic arm (XRA). While previous studies show task‐specific improvements with XRAs, it remains uncertain whether sk ...

Restoring dexterous hand control is critical for people with paralysis. Approaches based on surface or intramuscular stimulation provide limited finger control, generate insufficient force to recover functional movements, and require numerous electrodes. H ...

High neural selectivity is an important indicator of how well a neural electrode will perform in a clinical setup. Among other factors, neural selectivity of an electrode strongly depends on its implant location. Today, the neural selectivity is evaluated ...

Reliably interfacing a nerve with an electrode array is one of the approaches to restore motor and sensory functions after an injury to the peripheral nerve. Accomplishing this with current technologies is challenging as the electrode-neuron interface ofte ...

Objective. In this study we present the development and testing in a rat model of the self-opening neural interface (SELINE), a novel flexible peripheral neural interface. Approach. This polyimide-based electrode has a three-dimensional structure that prov ...

No adequate treatment currently exists for bilateral vestibulopathy, which can result in significant decreases of social and physical functioning. To improve patients' quality of life, vestibular neuroprostheses are being developed. Efficacy of current pro ...
