In the last years Mobile Brain/Body Imaging (MoBI) has been increasingly used to study cognition in the real world to give more ecological validity to brain imaging studies currently carried out only inside the lab. To increase portability of the setup and ...

The development of more effective approaches for controlling dexterous hand prostheses is an important area of research currently addressed by several groups with the aim of improving the quality of life of amputees. It is particularly important to establi ...

Overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is associated to several cardiovascular and metabolic dysfunctions, such as hypertension and insulin resistance. Indirect biochemical measurements and surgical manipulations have provided preliminary evi ...

Exosuits typically provide limited mechanical support and rely on a user's residual functional ability. However, people with neurological impairments often suffer from both motor and sensory deficits that limit the assistance an exosuit can provide. To ove ...

A computer-implemented method of training a neural network for generating upper or lower limb motion control signals to operate a virtual, robotic or prosthetic upper or lower limb, comprising providing or receiving, at a neural network, electromyographic ...

The clinical applications of neurotechnology are rapidly expanding, and the combination of different approaches could be more effective and precise to treat brain disorders. This Perspective discusses the potential and challenges of "multimodal neuromodula ...

Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) of lumbosacral segments can restore a range of movements after spinal cord injury. However, the mechanisms and neural structures through which EES facilitates movement execution remain unclear. Here, we designed a comp ...

Muscle synergies have been proposed as building blocks that simplify the construction of movements, and as a method to study motor behavior. However, the pre-processing of the EMG signals and the factorization algorithm may impact on their extraction and m ...

We propose a novel controller for powered prosthetic arms, where fused EMG and gaze data predict the desired end-point for a full arm prosthesis, which could drive the forward motion of individual joints. We recorded EMG, gaze, and motion-tracking during p ...

This study investigates the effectiveness of a robot-mediated strategy aimed at promoting balance recovery after multidirectional slippages. Six older adults were asked to manage anteroposterior and mediolateral slippages while donning an active pelvis ort ...

Purpose of reviewWhile wearable robotics is expanding within clinical settings, particularly for neurological rehabilitation, there is still a lack of consensus on how to effectively assess the performance of these devices. This review focuses on the most ...

Hand loss is a highly disabling event that markedly affects the quality of life. To achieve a close to natural replacement for the lost hand, the user should be provided with the rich sensations that we naturally perceive when grasping or manipulating an o ...

We highlight two alternative, yet complementary, solutions for har-nessing available neural resources for improving integration of artificial limbs (ALs) through embodiment. 'Hard' embodiment exploits neural and cognitive body mechanisms by closely mimicki ...

Bioelectronic medicine is an emerging approach to treat many types of diseases via electrical stimulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Because the vagus nerve (VN) is one of the most important nerves controlling several ANS functions, stimulation ...

Objective We investigated for the first time the presence of chronic changes in the functional organization of sensorimotor brain areas induced by prolonged training with a bidirectional hand prosthesis. Methods A multimodal neurophysiological and neuroima ...

Falls are one of the most serious problems in the elderly. Although previous studies clearly link the increased risk of falls with ageing, the mechanisms responsible for the modifications of reactive motor behaviours in response to external perturbations a ...

The acquisition of postural control is an elaborate process, which relies on the balanced integration of multisensory inputs. Current models suggest that young children rely on an 'en-block' control of their upper body before sequentially acquiring a segme ...
