Multi-polar stimulation protocols have been used in the past to increase the selectivity of electrical stimulation of the nervous system. Nonetheless, the number of possible multipolar stimulation protocols is prohibitively large and cannot be explored dur ...

The present invention provides an apparatus and a method able to estimate motor improvement in real-time during three-dimensional rehabilitation tasks and to consequently dynamically personalize the therapy. The method can be carried out by a computer progr ...

This study was aimed at investigating the intersegmental coordination of six older adults while managing unexpected slippages delivered during steady walking, and wearing an Active Pelvis Orthosis (APO). The APO was setup either to assist volunteers at the ...

People with late-stage Parkinson's disease (PD) often suffer from debilitating locomotor deficits that are resistant to currently available therapies. To alleviate these deficits, we developed a neuroprosthesis operating in closed loop that targets the dor ...

Peripheral nerve damage results in the loss of sensorimotor and autonomic functions, which is a significant burden to patients. Furthermore, nerve injuries greater than the limiting gap length require surgical repair. Although autografts are the preferred ...

The last few years witnessed radical improvements in lower-limb prostheses. Researchers have presented innovative solutions to overcome the limits of the first generation of prostheses, refining specific aspects which could be implemented in future prosthe ...

How movements are generated and controlled by the central nervous system (CNS) is still not well understood. In this work, we tested the hypothesis of a modular organization of the brain activity during the execution of voluntary movements. In particular, ...

The major challenge in upper limbs neuroprosthetic improvement is the implementation of effective sensory feedback. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) of the median and ulnar nerves confirmed, with electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings, ...

Researchers have succeeded in partly restoring damaged vestibular functionality in several animal models. Recently, acute interventions have also been demonstrated in human patients. Our previous work on a vestibular implant for humans used predefined stim ...

Goal: The experimental study of the stumble phenomena is essential to develop novel technological solutions to limit harmful effects in at-risk populations. A versatile platform to deliver realistic and unanticipated tripping perturbations, controllable in ...

Excessive beta-band oscillations in the subthalamic nucleus are key neural features of Parkinson's disease. Yet the distinctive contributions of beta low and high bands, their dependency on striatal dopamine, and their correlates with movement kinematics a ...

Background: The impact of acute unilateral injury on spontaneous electrical activity in both vagus nerves at the heart level is poorly understood. We investigated the immediate neuroelectrical response after right or left cardiac vagal nerve transection (V ...

This Review discusses non-invasive and invasive technologies for conveying artificial sensory feedback through bionic hands. ...

Introduction/aims The hand is a sophisticated tool which allows humans to interact with the external world mainly via the sense of touch. Previous evidences demonstrated that electrical stimulations of the nerve trunks governing the hand are able to restor ...

This paper proposes an EMG based learning approach for estimating the displacement along the 2-axes (abduction/adduction and flexion/extension) of the human wrist in real-time. The algorithm extracts features from the EMG electrodes on the upper and forear ...

Despite recognized as one key component for establishing a functional electrical connection with nerves, neural invasive peripheral interfaces are still not optimal for long-term applications in humans. An improvement in the field of biocompatible and nont ...

Forearm pronosupination is an essential movement for many activities of daily living as it complements hand manipulation. Despite being highly impaired in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), it is rarely assisted by wearable robots, likely due to th ...

Surface electromyography (sEMG) allows to evaluate neurophysiological aspects of movements. The traditional muscle-specific sEMG approach requires considerable expertise to correctly position bipolar derivations over each muscle of interest. This reduces t ...
