Reversible deformation is a unique property of elastic materials. Here, we design and fabricate highly stretchable multilayered films by patterning Y-shaped motifs through films of non- elastic materials, e.g. plastics, metals, ceramics. By adjusting the g ...

The human skin is a unique organ that embeds multiple functions that no artificial systems can currently replicate. Advances in materials science and engineering are driving the design of electronic skins-large-area sensor arrays that mimic some sensory mo ...

Implantable neuroprostheses are engineered systems designed to restore or substitute function for individuals with neurological deficits or disabilities. These systems involve at least one uni-or bidirectional interface between a living neural tissue and a ...

It is disclosed an electrical interconnection system comprising: i) an interconnection board comprising an intrinsically non elastic substrate, said substrate having a first face and an opposed second face, and at least one conductive track on and/or withi ...

A method for producing a device adapted to be implanted into the human body for purposes such as neural stimulation, sensing or the like, and device produced according to said method, said method comprising: providing a stretchable layer or membrane (21) o ...

Stretchable biphasic conductors are formed by physical vapor deposition of gallium onto an alloying metal film. The properties of the photolithography-compatible thin metal films are highlighted by low sheet resistance (0.5 Ω sq−1) and large stretchability ...

Numerous neurorehabilitative, neuroprosthetic, and repair interventions aim to address the consequences of upper limb impairments after neurological disorders. Although these therapies target widely different mechanisms, they share the common need for a pr ...

Recovery of reaching and grasping ability is the priority for people with cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) has shown promising results in improving motor control after SCI in various animal models and in humans. Nota ...

Intraoperative electrocorticography (ECoG) captures neural information from the surface of the cerebral cortex during surgeries such as resections for intractable epilepsy and tumors. Current clinical ECoG grids come in evenly spaced, millimeter-sized elec ...

We have developed two fundamental components to manufacture a prosthetic skin: a stretchable pressure sensor formed of piezoelectric elastomer/ferroelectret multilayer sandwiched between stretchable electrodes and stretchable thin-film transistors. The com ...

Transistors are often envisioned as alternative transducing devices to microelectrodes to communicate with the nervous system. Independently of the selected technology, the transistors should have reliable performance when exposed to physiological conditio ...

Long-term biointegration of man-made neural interfaces is influenced by the mechanical properties of the implant materials. Substantial experimental work currently aims at replacing conventional hard implant materials with soft alternatives that can favour ...

People with late-stage Parkinson's disease (PD) often suffer from debilitating locomotor deficits that are resistant to currently available therapies. To alleviate these deficits, we developed a neuroprosthesis operating in closed loop that targets the dor ...

Electrocorticography (ECoG) is a minimally invasive approach frequently used clinically to map epileptogenic regions of the brain and facilitate lesion resection surgery and increasingly explored in brain-machine interface applications. Current devices dis ...

Traditional microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are limited to measuring electrophysiological activity in two dimen- Attribution creative commons sions, failing to capture the complexity of three-dimensional (3D) tissues such as neural organoids and spheroids. no ...

IMPORTANCE A growing number of neurologic treatments rely on neural implants capable of delivering electrical and chemical stimulation to targeted regions of the central nervous system for extended periods. OBJECTIVE To assess the potential of a novel clas ...

In this paper, we report a fully stretchable liquid metal based sensor system for compliance detection. The system is composed of a strain sensor layer, a gap layer with a hole in the center and a pressure sensor layer from top to bottom. Inspired from the ...

Long-term bioelectronic implants require stable, hermetic encapsulation. Water and ion ingress are challenging to quantify, especially in miniaturized microsystems and over time. We propose a wireless and battery-free flexible platform leveraging backscatt ...

Next generation invasive neural interfaces require fully implantable wireless systems that can record from a large number of channels simultaneously. However, transferring the recorded data from the implant to an external receiver emerges as a significant ...

Stretchable electronics typically integrate hard, functional materials on soft substrates. Here we report on engineered elastomeric substrates designed to host stretchable circuitry. Regions of a stiff material, patterned using photolithography, are embedd ...
