Bioelectronic implantable systems (BIS) targeting biomedical and clinical research should combine long-term performance and biointegration in vivo. Here, recent advances in novel encapsulations to protect flexible versions of such systems from the surround ...

Wearable electronic circuits based on the films of gallium and its alloys offer promising implementations in health monitoring and gaming sensing applications. However, the complex rheology of liquid metals makes it challenging to manufacture thin gallium‐ ...

Wireless implantable neural recording chips enable multichannel data acquisition with high spatiotemporal resolution in situ. Recently, the use of machine learning approaches on neural data for diagnosis and prosthesis control have renewed the interest in ...

A method for manufacturing an electrical conductor is herein disclosed, said method comprising a) providing a substrate comprising on a surface thereof a solid metal conductive layer or film; b) depositing a liquid metal on said solid layer; c) allowing sa ...

Flexible and soft bioelectronics display conflicting demands on miniaturization, compliance, and reliability. Here, the authors investigate the design and performance of thin encapsulation multilayers against hermeticity and mechanical integrity. Partially ...

A method for manufacturing an electrical conductor 43 and an electrical conductor 43 manufactured according to the method, said method comprising: providing a substrate 30; depositing a solid metal conductive layer or film 40 on said substrate 30; Depositi ...

Activation of nociceptor sensory neurons by noxious stimuli both triggers pain and increases capillary permeability and blood flow to produce neurogenic inflammation(1,2), but whether nociceptors also interact with the immune system remains poorly understo ...

Soft robotic systems are composed of active and passively deformable structures which are intrinsically compliant, flexible, and elastic. Although these features offer benefits of adaptability, robustness, and safety, controlling these types of robots is a ...

Restoring hand function in people suffering from neuromotor hand impairment is a crucial step towards regaining independence. Wearable robotic hand orthoses are a promising approach to support that aim by providing grasp assistance in daily life. For succe ...

When rigid and stretchable components are integrated onto a single elastic carrier substrate, large strain heterogeneities appear in the vicinity of the deformable-non-deformable interfaces. In this paper, we report on a generic approach to manufacture hyb ...

Recent studies investigated the hydrolysis of Magnesium (Mg) thin films, highlighting their potential use in biodegradable devices. Quantitatively monitoring the degradation rate and morphological changes of Mg through optical methods and light-delivery de ...

Regaining arm control is a top priority for people with paralysis. Unfortunately, the complexity of the neural mechanisms underlying arm control has limited the effectiveness of neurotechnology approaches. Here, we exploited the neural function of survivin ...

The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) restores hearing in patients with damaged auditory nerves. One of the main ideas to improve the efficacy of ABIs is to increase spatial specificity of stimulation, in order to minimize extra-auditory side-effects and to ...

A stretchable tactile sensor skin has been demonstrated on the dorsal side of a robotic hand for the first time. The sensors can detect normal pressures on the same scale as human skin but also in excess of 250 kPa and withstand strains in excess of 15%. U ...

The mechanical mismatch between implantable interfaces and neural tissues may be reduced by employing soft polymeric materials. Here, we report on a simple strategy to prepare and pattern a soft electrode coating of neural interfacing devices based on a sc ...

Objective: This study explored intraneural stimulation of the right thoracic vagus nerve (VN) in sexually mature male minipigs to modulate safe heart rate and blood pressure response. Material and Methods: We employed an intraneural electrode designed for ...

Hydrogels are a class of soft materials, which display unique biomimetic properties to biological tissues. Their mechanical properties, high water content, and porosity resemble that of extracellular matrix so that cell growth and proliferation can be reli ...

Integrated wearable electronics capable of transducing and transmitting biophysical information on complex and dynamic systems are attracting high interest across the consumer electronics, clinical, and research domains. Gallium and gallium-based liquid me ...

This paper details the development and preliminary testing of GaitSkin, a wearable haptic interface designed for generating sensorimotor conflicts during locomotion. The system leverages real-time gait tracking and a wireless vibrotactile skin patch to pro ...

Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) of lumbosacral sensorimotor circuits improves leg motor control in animals and humans with spinal cord injury (SCI). Upper-limb motor control involves similar circuits, located in the cervical spinal cord, suggesting t ...
