Car-sharing systems are an attractive alternative to private vehicles due to their benefits in terms of mobility and sustainability. However, the distribution of vehicles throughout the network in one-way systems is disturbed due to asymmetry and stochasti ...

This paper investigates the accuracy of mean density estimation from direct sensing at link and network levels. Different calculation methods are compared depending on sensor type, probe vehicles or loop detectors, and availability to quantify the magnitud ...

Complex network theory describes network performance mostly based on topological characteristics, like betweenness centrality. This work integrates concepts from complex networks and traffic engineering. We propose a new measure for spatial networks and, i ...

Connectivity and digitalization will enable new control measures in urban air mobility operations and open new ways for integrating these measures in real-time traffic management. Hence, new control strategies can be designed to regulate both demand and su ...

Balancing passenger demand and vehicle availability is crucial for ensuring the sustainability and effectiveness of urban transportation systems. To address this challenge, we propose a novel hierarchical strategy for the efficient distribution of empty ve ...

One-way electric vehicle carsharing systems are receiving increasing attention due to their mobility, environmental, and societal benefits. One of the major issues faced by the operators of these systems is the optimization of the relocation operations of ...

The evaluation of perimeter control using Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) concept is strongly related with the quality of the corresponding dynamic models. For capturing the real characteristics of traffic dynamics, an enhanced accumulation-based tra ...

Motivated by the omnipresence of hierarchical structures in many real-world applications, this study delves into the intricate realm of bi-level games, with a specific focus on exploring local Stackelberg equilibria as a solution concept. While existing li ...

An alternative approach for real-time network-wide traffic control in cities that has recently gained a lot of interest is perimeter flow control. The basic concept of such an approach is to partition heterogeneous cities into a small number of homogeneous ...

© The Author(s) 2024.Deep learning models are widely used for traffic forecasting on freeways due to their ability to learn complex temporal and spatial relationships. In particular, graph neural networks, which integrate graph theory into deep learning, h ...

It has been recently shown that a macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) linking space-mean network flow, density and speed exists in the urban transportation networks under some conditions. An MFD is further well defined if the network is homogeneous with ...

This paper presents a comprehensive framework for extracting georeferenced vehicle trajectories from high-altitude drone imagery, addressing key challenges in urban traffic monitoring and the limitations of traditional ground-based systems. Our approach in ...

Recent analysis of empirical data from cities showed that a macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) of urban traffic provides for homogenous network regions a unimodal low-scatter relationship between network vehicle density and network space-mean flow. In t ...

Buses operating in mixed traffic experience problems with delay and travel time variability in peak periods. Numerous transit priority measures are found in the literature but most rely on separating buses from other vehicles. Complete separation such as d ...

Road space distribution among multiple modes of transport in urban networks has attracted the interest of several researchers and policy planners. Traditionally, these problems are solved by ignoring operational and dynamic characteristics of multi-modal c ...

This study focuses on the morning commute problem with explicit consideration of cruising-for-parking, and its adverse impacts on traffic congestion. The cruising-for-parking is modeled through a dynamic aggregated traffic model for networks: the Macroscop ...

Traffic forecasting problems of freeway networks are heavily tackled by deep learning methods because it requires learning highly complex correlations between variables both in time and space. Adopting a graph convolutional network (GCN) becomes a standard ...

This paper proposes a receding-horizon, game-theoretic charging planning mechanism for electric ride-hailing markets. As the demand for ride-hailing services continues to surge and governments advocate for stricter environmental regulations, integrating el ...

Bus operations, due to their unstable nature, are inefficient when left to their own devices. Irregularities such as bus bunching lead to loss of time and decrease bus service quality. Development of bus transport system management schemes to avoid bus bun ...

A new gating strategy for concentric cities based on the notion of the macroscopic or network fundamental diagram and the feedback-based gating concept is introduced and successfully tested. Different regions of large-scale urban networks may experience co ...
