Electric fields can be effectively used to sense, manipulate, and move particles in lab-on-a-chip devices. Nevertheless, the throughput of such devices is a critical issue, which can be effectively improved by increasing the height of the microchannels. Fo ...

Functional bone marrow studies have focused primarily on hematopoietic progenitors, leaving limited knowledge about other fragile populations, such as bone marrow adipocytes (BMAds) and megakaryocytes. The isolation of these cells is challenging due to rup ...

Recently, there has been increasing attention toward inhaled nanoparticles (NPs) to develop inhalation therapies for diseases associated with the pulmonary system and investigate the toxic effects of hazardous environmental particles on human lung health. ...

Label-free approaches to assess cell properties ideally suit the requirements of cell-based therapeutics, since they permit to characterize cells with minimal perturbation and manipulation, at the benefit of sample recovery and re-employment for treatment. ...

This paper reports a method for label-free single-cell biophysical analysis of multiple cells trapped in suspension by electrokinetic forces. Tri-dimensional pillar electrodes arranged along the width of a microfluidic chamber define actuators for single c ...

This paper presents a switched-capacitor (SC) current integrator circuit for impedance measurement of tethered bilayer lipid membrane (tBLM) biosensors. The circuit comprises a small number of high performance components enabling enhanced experimental flex ...

In the framework of bioanalytics and multiple array detection, we developed a fully portable and low-cost detection system based on Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) in a transmission configuration (T-LSPR). The transmission approach is suitable t ...

Hydrodynamic-based microfluidic platforms enable single-cell arraying and analysis over time. Despite the advantages of established microfluidic systems, long-term analysis and proliferation of cells selected in such devices require off-chip recovery of ce ...

In the past few decades the scientific community has been recognizing the paramount role of the cell microenvironment in determining cell behavior. In parallel, the study of human stem cells for their potential therapeutic applications has been progressing ...

Microsystems combining fluid dynamics and electric-field-induced forces have emerged as powerful tools for manipulating and isolating biological species. Advances in electrokinetic theory, combined with optimized microfabrication processes, are at the core ...

This paper presents an experimental study on different microelectrode fabrication techniques, with particular focus on the robustness of the surface insulation towards typical working conditions required in lab-on-a-chip applications. Pt microelectrodes wi ...

To address limitations in the production of DNA aptamers against small molecules, we introduce a DNA-based capture-SELEX (systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment) protocol with long and continuous randomized library for more flexibility, ...

This paper presents a chip-level postcomplementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) processing technique for 3-D integration and through-silicon-via (TSV) fabrication. The proposed technique is based on dry-film lithography, which is a low-cost and simple ...

We present a quantitative numerical analysis of dielectric microbead detection experiments with nanoribbons operated in the AC small signal regime. To this purpose, a comprehensive model of nanoribbon operation in electrolyte environment and with DC/AC sig ...

The present invention relates to a device to carry out semiconductor based molecular diagnostics comprising a microfluidic chip carrier 1, an elastomer microfluidic module 2 and a CMOS chip 3, one surface of said microfluidic module facing and contacting o ...

In this paper, a CMOS-compatible chip-to-chip 3D integration platform will be presented. The developed technology allows reconstituting a wafer from diced and thinned chips. Then, chip-to-chip bonding and TSV fabrication steps are accomplished in wafer-lev ...

This paper presents a fabrication process for arrays of high-aspect-ratio micropillar electrodes, which are freestanding 3D structures that feature metal sidewalls connected to passivated planar wires. Facing vertical electrodes are considered to be a key ...

The simplicity of homogeneous immunoassays makes them suitable for diagnostics of acute conditions. Indeed, the absence of washing steps reduces the binding reaction duration and favors a rapid and compact device, a critical asset for patients experiencing ...

Field-effect transistors (FETs) with open gate structures such as Silicon Nanoribbons (SiNRs) are promising candidates to become general platforms for ultrasensitive, label-free and real-time detection of biochemical interactions on surface. This work prop ...

A more specific and intense signal is desirable for most kinds of biosensors for biomedical or environmental applications, and it is especially so for label-free biosensors. In this paper, we show that hybridization chain reaction (HCR) can be exploited fo ...
