The performance of a tandem solar cell depends on the performance of its constituting subcells. Although this dependency is theoretically straightforward for open-circuit voltage (V-oc) and short-circuit current, it is indirect for fill factor (FF) and thu ...

The optical performance of tandem a-Si:H/mu c-Si:H (micromorph) thin film solar cell was investigated experimentally and by means of rigorous 3-D optical simulation. The interplay of intermediate reflectors, with different refractive indices and thicknesse ...

ZnO bilayer films were deposited by a low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition technique in a single process step, by doping with boron only the nucleation stage of the growth. The resulting 2 pm thick layers are characterized by low free carrie ...

In this study, we present dopant-free back contact heterojunction silicon solar cells employing MoOx and MgFx based stacks as hole-and electron-selective contacts deposited using a thermal evaporation process at low temperature. Only two masking steps and ...

The temperature coefficient (TC) is an essential figure of merit to accurately evaluate solar cell performance at various operating temperatures and hence enabling the comparison between different cell technologies. Recently, solar cells that use passivati ...

There is general agreement that the future production of electric energy has to be renewable and sustainable in the long term. Photovoltaic (PV) is booming with more than 7GW produced in 2008 and will therefore play an important role in the future electric ...

Silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cell efficiencies are limited by parasitic absorption from the hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) front contact, but this may be mitigated by selecting an alternative carrier selective contact material with a wider b ...

Tandem solar cells that feature a high-bandgap perovskite cell on top of a lower bandgap silicon cell have the potential to reach efficiencies > 30%. Here, we present a versatile hybrid deposition method that yields conformal perovskite cells directly on t ...

We discuss here optical losses in silicon heterojunction solar cells and strategies to minimize them. Optical losses originate from most non-crystalline-silicon layers involved in the solar cell. A breakdown for typical values is shown evidencing that supp ...

This paper reports on the fabrication of In xGa 1 - xN (InGaN) layers with various compositions ranging from InN to GaN using a cost-effective low-temperature plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method and analyzes the influence of deposition ...

A full-scale pilot line for producing bifacial solar modules based on silicon heterojunction technology was set up as part of the European H2020 AMPERE project. In this study, the measurements from two outdoor test benches were used to evaluate the perform ...

Silicon solar cells are approaching their theoretical efficiency limit of 29%. This limitation can be exceeded with advanced device architectures, where two or more solar cells are stacked to improve the harvesting of solar energy. In this work, we devise ...

This short communication highlights our latest results towards high-efficiency microcrystalline silicon single-junction solar cells. By combining adequate cell design with high-quality material, a new world record efficiency was achieved for single-junctio ...

We demonstrate self-patterned insulating nanoparticle layers to define local electrical interconnects in thin-film electronic devices. We show this with thin-film silicon tandem solar cells, where we introduce between the two component cells a solution-pro ...

We present and experimentally validate a computational model for the light propagation in thin-film solar cells that integrates non-paraxial scalar diffraction theory with non-sequential ray-tracing. The model allows computing the spectral layer absorbance ...

We report on the development of hydrogenated n-type amorphous and microcrystalline silicon oxides ((n)-SiOx:H and (n) mu c-SiOx:H, respectively) by PECVD, and their successful integration as n-window layers for silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells devi ...

The window-layer stack limits the efficiency of both-side-contacted silicon heterojunction solar cells. We discuss here the combination of several modifications to this stack to improve its optoelectronic performance. These include the introduction of a na ...

Monocrystalline 1.7 eV Mg0.13Cd0.87Te/MgxCd1-xTe (x > 0.13) double heterostructure (DH) solar cells with varying Mg compositions in the barrier layers are grown by molecular beam epitaxy. A Mg0.13Cd0.87Te/Mg0.37Cd0.63Te DH solar cell featuring abrupt inter ...

An amorphous Si thin film with TiO2 encapsulation layer is demonstrated as a highly promising and stable photocathode for solar hydrogen production. With platinum as prototypical cocatalyst, a photocurrent onset potential of 0.93 V vs RHE and saturation ph ...
