Spin hyperpolarization enables real-time metabolic imaging of carbon-13-labeled substrates. While hyperpolarized L- (1-13C)alaninamide is a probe of the cell-surface tumor marker aminopeptidase-N (APN, CD13), its activity in vivo has not been described. Sc ...

The billion tons of synthetic-polymer-based materials (i.e. plastics) produced yearly are a great challenge for humanity. Nature produces even more natural polymers, yet they are sustainable. Proteins are sequence-defined natural polymers that are constant ...

Ruthenium(II) complexes with a three-legged piano-stool structure based on an arene ring, an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-carbene ligand with a peracetylated glucose moiety and two chlorides or one bidentate ligand, were prepared and characterized by spect ...

N-formylation of amines with CO2 is base-catalyzed and studies of salt catalysts reveal that the reaction is efficiently catalyzed by "free" floating anions of high basicity, as represented in the cover image. More information can be found in the Full Pape ...

Viral infections kill millions of people and new antivirals are needed. Nontoxic drugs that irreversibly inhibit viruses (virucidal) are postulated to be ideal. Unfortunately, all virucidal molecules described to date are cytotoxic. We recently developed n ...

Social insects frequently engage in oral fluid exchange trophallaxis between adults, and between adults and larvae. Although trophallaxis is widely considered a food-sharing mechanism, we hypothesized that endogenous components of this fluid might underlie ...

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) present a promising subclass of classic heterogeneous catalysts by maximizing metal dispersion and enhancing efficiency. Although high-density SACs (HD-SACs) are reported, their synthesis is typically constrained to specific me ...

Inspired by the preferential, allosteric binding of RAPTA-T and auranofin to the nucleosome core particle, we describe the design and synthesis of a series of heterobimetallic ruthenium(II)-gold(I) complexes with varying spacer lengths ranging from four to ...

Life-history theory predicts that iteroparous females allocate their resources differently among different breeding seasons depending on their residual reproductive value. In iteroparous salmonids there is typically much variation in egg size, egg number, ...

Of the different modalities used to treat retinoblastoma, a chemothermotherapeutic regimen combining carboplatin and thermotherapy (also termed focal therapy), and the application of melphalan as a monotherapy, are particularly successful. Some studies ind ...

The circadian clock is a ubiquitous molecular time-keeping mechanism which synchronizes cellular, tissue, and systemic biological functions with 24-hour environmental cycles. Local circadian clocks drive cell type- and tissuespecific rhythms and their dysr ...

Respiratory viruses including the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) aggravate the global burden of virus-inflicted morbidity and mortality. Entry inhibitors are a promising class of antiviral drugs for combating these viruses, as they can prevent infection ...

Modulating the metabolism of cancer cells, immune cells, or both is a promising strategy to potentiate cancer immunotherapy in the nutrient-competitive tumor microenvironment. Glutamine has emerged as an ideal target as cancer cells highly rely on glutamin ...

Global drive away from fossil feedstock requires the development of synthetic procedures to enhance the efficiency of CO2 capture and utilization processes using renewable starting materials and catalysts. Here, we report an alternative reaction pathway fo ...

The controlled release of small molecular modulators of the immune response from hydrogel microspheres (MS) used for cell immobilization is an attractive approach to reduce pericapsular fibrotic overgrowth (PFO) after transplantation. Ketoprofen is a well- ...

Rationale The Analysis of Oligonucleotide Modifications from Mass Spectra (Aom(2)S) was created to support the analysis of oligonucleotide mass spectra. This application complements the existing software tools by providing a comprehensive analysis of oligo ...

Although genomic DNA is the primary target of anticancer platinum-based drugs, interactions with proteins also play a significant role in their overall activity. In this study, competitive binding of cisplatin with an oligonucleotide and two peptides corre ...

Protein crystallography and biochemical assays reveal that the organometallic drug, [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)Cl-2(pta)] (RAPTA-C), preferentially binds to nucleosomal histone proteins in chromatin. To better understand the binding mechanism we report here a mas ...

A safe and efficient lithium-ion battery requires including an additive in the electrolyte. Among the additives used, vinylene carbonate (VC) is particularly interesting, because it leads to the formation of a stable and protective solid electrolyte interp ...

The design of stimuli-responsive nanocarriers has raised much attention to achieve higher local concentration of therapeutics and mitigate the appearance of drug resistance. The combination of imaging properties and controlled photorelease of active molecu ...
