Research in schizophrenia (SZ) emphasizes the need for new therapeutic approaches based on antioxidant/anti-inflammatory compounds and psycho-social therapy. A hallmark of SZ is a dysfunction of parvalbumin-expressing fast-spiking interneurons (PVI), which ...

This study aims to determine whether 1) individuals with treatment-resistant schizophrenia display early cognitive impairment compared to treatment-responders and healthy controls and 2) N-methyl-D-aspartate-receptor hypofunction is an underlying mechanism ...

Background: There is increasing evidence that children or young adults having acquired liver disease in childhood display neurocognitive impairment which may become more apparent as they grow older. The molecular, cellular and morphological underpinnings o ...

BackgroundThe imbalance of glutamate (Glu) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmitter system plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Riluzole is a Glu modulator originally approved for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis th ...

Redox biology and immune signaling play major roles in the body, including in brain function. A rapidly growing literature also suggests that redox and immune abnormalities are implicated in neuropsychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia (SZ), bipolar d ...

Defects in essential metabolic regulation for energy supply, increased oxidative stress promoting excitatory/inhibitory imbalance and phospholipid membrane dysfunction have been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia (SZ). The knowledge about t ...

Glycine is an amino acid present in mammalian brain, where it acts as an inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitter. The two detectable protons of glycine give rise to a singlet at 3.55 ppm that overlaps with the more intense myo-inositol resonances, and i ...

IntroductionRecent efforts have been made to apply machine learning and deep learning approaches to the automated classification of schizophrenia using structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) at the individual level. However, these approaches are less ...

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI), are non-invasive techniques used to quantify biochemical compounds in tissue, such as choline, creatine, glutamate, glutamine, γ-aminobutyric acid, N-acetylaspartate ...

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy can be applied in vivo to measure static or dynamic biochemical information, e.g., concentrations of metabolites and metabolic fluxes, using various nuclei such as 1H, 13C, 31P and 15N. The work of this thesis ...

Despite obvious improvements in spectral resolution at high magnetic field, the detection of C-13 labeling by H-1-[C-13] NMR spectroscopy remains hampered by spectral overlap, such as in the spectral region of H-1 resonances bound to C3 of glutamate (Glu) ...

The invasive behavior of glioblastoma, the most aggressive primary brain tumor, is considered highly relevant for tumor recurrence. However, the invasion zone is difficult to visualize by Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and is protected by the blood brain ...

The medulla oblongata (MO) contains a high density of glycinergic synapses and a particularly high concentration of glycine The aims of this study were to measure directly in vivo the neurochemical profile, including glycine, in MO using a spin-echo-based ...

Knowledge of T-1 relaxation times can be important for accurate relative and absolute quantification of brain metabolites, for sensitivity optimizations, for characterizing molecular dynamics, and for studying changes induced by various pathological condit ...

Knowledge of proton T-2 relaxation time of metabolites is essential for proper quantitation of metabolite concentrations in localized proton spectroscopy, especially at moderate to long TEs. Although the T-2 relaxation time of singlets, such as that of cre ...

ious mechanisms involved in schizophrenia pathophysiology, such as dopamine dysregulation, glutamate/NMDA receptor dysfunction, neuroinflammation or redox imbalance, all appear to converge towards an oxidative stress "hub" affecting parvalbumine interneuro ...

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) has been used to demonstrate metabolic changes in the visual cortex on visual stimulation. Small (2% to 11%) but significant stimulation induced increases in lactate, glutamate, and glutathione were observe ...

Metabolic changes precede malignant histology. However, it remains unclear whether detectable characteristic metabolome exists in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) tissues and biofluids for early diagnosis. Here, we conduct NMR- and MS-based metabo ...

Proton MR spectra of the brain, especially those measured at short and intermediate echo times, contain signals from mobile macromolecules (MM). A description of the main MM is provided in this consensus paper. These broad peaks of MM underlie the narrower ...

(13)C magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) combined with the administration of (13)C labeled substrates uniquely allows to measure metabolic fluxes in vivo in the brain of humans and rats. The extension to mouse models may provide exclusive prospect for t ...
