Aims/Purpose: Eye diseases are implicitly assumed to affect vision generally. However, only visual acuity and contrast sensitivity are usually measured to determine perceptual deficits. What about orientation and motion perception? Methods: To address th ...

We investigated how the visual system selects a reference frame for the perception of motion. Two concentric arcs underwent circular motion around the center of the display, where observers fixated. The outer (target) arc's angular velocity profile was mod ...

The obvious symptoms of schizophrenia are of cognitive and psychopathological nature. However, schizophrenia affects also visual processing which becomes particularly evident when stimuli are presented for short durations and are followed by a masking stim ...

Schizophrenic patients have serious visual masking deficits which are likely related to the genetic underpinnings of the disease because also unaffected relatives of the patients show masking deficits. We presented a left/right offset vernier followed by a ...

The electroencephalogram (EEG) is a non-invasive and low-cost tool for the investigation of human brain function. However, EEG data are typically contaminated with a number of artifacts. With the advent of both high-density EEG arrays and studies of large ...

When facing age-related cerebral decline, older adults are unequally affected by cognitive impairment without us knowing why. To explore underlying mechanisms and find possible solutions to maintain life-space mobility, there is a need for a standardized b ...

Crowding, the impairment of target discrimination in clutter, is the standard situation in vision. Traditionally, crowding is explained with (feedforward) models, in which only neighboring elements interact, leading to a “bottleneck” at the earliest stages ...

Neuroimaging studies typically compare experimental conditions using average brain responses, thereby overlooking the stimulus-related information conveyed by distributed spatio-temporal patterns of single-trial responses. Here, we take advantage of this r ...

The human visual system computes features of moving objects with high precision despite the fact that these features can change or blend into each other in the retinotopic image. Very little is known about how the human brain accomplishes this complex feat ...

Visual backward masking is a very sensitive tool for studying early visual processing deficits and a reliable endophenotype of schizophrenia. Mental diseases strongly overlap in many aspects, for example, in psychopathology, cognition, and genetics. Here, ...

Sustained attention deficits measured by the Continuous Performance Test (CPT) have been reportedly proposed as an endophenotype of schizophrenia. One requirement for an endophenotype is that unaffected first-order relatives must show deteriorated performa ...

Many of the decisions we make in our everyday lives are sequential and entail sparse rewards. While sequential decision-making has been extensively investigated in theory (e.g., by reinforcement learning models) there is no systematic experimental paradigm ...

To make sense out of a continuously changing visual world, people need to integrate features across space and time. Despite more than a century of research, the mechanisms of features integration are still a matter of debate. To examine how temporal and sp ...

The drift diffusion model (Ratcliff, 1978) is widely used to model binary decision-making. In this model, evidence for the two alternatives is integrated over time until it hits a decision boundary leading to a reaction. The drift diffusion model fits many ...

Due to the movements of the observer and those of objects in the environment, retinotopic representations are highly unstable during ecological viewing conditions. The phenomenal stability of our perception suggests that retinotopic representations are tra ...

In cognition, audition, and somatosensation, performance correlates strongly between different paradigms suggesting the existence of common factors. Surprisingly, this does not hold true for vision. For example, performance in line bisection and visual acu ...

In many daily tasks, we make multiple decisions before reaching a goal. In order to learn such sequences of decisions, a mechanism to link earlier actions to later reward is necessary. Reinforcement learning (RL) theory suggests two classes of algorithms s ...

Visual backward masking is a commonly used technique in vision research and psychology. There are two distinct types of masking. Either masking is strongest for a simultaneous presentation of the target and the mask (A-type masking) or masking is strongest ...

In chess, a series of moves is made until a delayed sparse feedback (win, loss) is issued, which makes it impossible to evaluate the value of a single move. There are powerful reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms, which can cope with these sequential dec ...

Schizophrenic patients show strong impairments in visual backward masking possibly caused by deficits on the early stages of visual processing. The underlying aberrant mechanisms are not clearly understood. Spatial as well as temporal processing deficits h ...
