It has been claimed that video gamers possess increased perceptual and cognitive skills compared to non-video gamers. Here, we examined to which extent gaming performance in CS:GO (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive) correlates with visual performance. We tes ...

Perceptual learning is the ability to improve perception through practice. Perceptual learning is usually specific for the task and features learned. For example, improvements in performance for a certain stimulus do not transfer if the stimulus is rotated ...

Investigations of visual crowding, where a target is difficult to identify because of flanking elements, has largely used a theoretical perspective based on local interactions where flanking elements pool with or substitute for properties of the target. Th ...

Contextual elements can strongly modulate visual performance. For example, performance deteriorates when a vernier is flanked by neighboring lines. On a neural level, such contextual modulation is often explained by local spatial interactions such as later ...

How the brain integrates visual information across time into coherent percepts is an open question. Here, we presented two verniers with opposite offset directions one after the other. A vernier consists of two vertical bars that are horizontally offset. W ...

Visual backward masking (VBM) is a very sensitive endophenotype of schizophrenia. Masking deficits are highly correlated with reduced EEG amplitudes. In VBM, a target stimulus is followed by a mask, which decreases performance on the target. Here, we inves ...

Genetic variations of the alpha7 subunit of the nicotinergic acetylcholine receptor gene (CHRNA7) are linked to cognitive deficits in aging and schizophrenia. However, little is known about associations of the CHRNA7 gene with aged-related decline in visua ...

Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgical procedure worldwide and is typically associated with an improvement in visual acuity (VA). This study aimed to examine how various visual functions, beyond VA and contrast sensitivity, are affected b ...

Conscious perception is preceded by long periods of unconscious processing. These periods are crucial for analyzing temporal information and for solving the many ill-posed problems of vision. An important question is what starts and ends these windows and ...

Perceptual learning is often considered one of the simplest and basic forms of learning in general. Accordingly, it is usually modeled with simple and basic neural networks which show good results in grasping the empirical data. Simple meets simple. Comple ...

The cholinergic system is known to strongly modulate perceptual and cognitive processes, and the alpha7 subunit of the cholinergic nicotinic receptor (CHRNA7) is broadly expressed within the visual system. Here, we assessed whether genetic variations of CH ...

In motor learning, training a task B can disrupt improvements of performance of a previously learned task A, indicating that learning needs consolidation. An influential study suggested that this is the case also for visual perceptual learning [1]. Using t ...

European Journal of Neuroscience published by Federation of European Neuroscience Societies and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Within the reductionist framework, researchers in the special sciences formulate key terms and concepts and try to explain them with lower ...

Invisibility is often thought to occur because of the low-level limitations of the visual system. For example, it is often assumed that backward masking renders a target invisible because the visual system is simply too slow to resolve the target and the m ...

Even in the absence of neurodegenerative disease, aging strongly affects vision. Whereas optical deficits are well documented, much less is known perceptual deficits. In most perceptual studies, one paradigm is tested and it is usually found that older par ...

Visual backward masking (VBM) is a potential endophenotype for schizophrenia. Relative VBM deficits were also observed in high as compared to low scorers in one schizotypal subdimension (cognitive disorganisation, CogDis; Cappe et al., 2012). VBM deficits ...

The developed world is aging faster than ever before. Even in the absence of neurodegenerative disease, aging affects all kinds of human functions including perception and cognition. In most perceptual studies, one paradigm is tested and it is usually foun ...

The human brain analyzes a visual object first by basic feature detectors. On the objects way to a conscious percept, these features are integrated in subsequent stages of the visual hierarchy. The time course of this feature integration is largely unknown ...

Feature fusion reflects temporal integration. Previous studies mostly employed foveal presentations with no attention manipulation. In this study we examined the effects of sustained spatial attention on temporal integration using feature-fusion with perip ...

Introduction Unilateral movements are primarily processed in contralateral cortical and subcortical areas and additionally in ipsilateral cerebellum, leading to an asymmetric pattern of neural activation. Decrease of lateralization is characteristic of agi ...
