Vision scientists have attempted to classify visual illusions according to certain aspects, such as brightness or spatial features. For example, Piaget proposed that visual illusion magnitudes either decrease or increase with age. Subsequently, it was sugg ...

Common factors are ubiquitous. First, we show that, however in vision, correlations of performance in similar paradigms are low even though test-retest reliability is high. Second, one might expect that correlations increase with increasing age because of ...

What is fundamental in vision has been discussed for millennia. For philosophical realists and the physiological approach to vision, the objects of the outer world are truly given, and failures to perceive objects properly, such as in illusions, are just s ...

In cognition, audition and somatosensation, performance correlates strongly between different tasks suggesting the existence of common factors. Surprisingly, this does not hold true for vision. For example, Vernier acuity and Gabor detection correlate very ...

Aging affects all kinds of human functions including perception and cognition. In most perceptual studies, one paradigm is tested and it is usually found that older participants perform worse than younger participants. Implicitly, these results are taken a ...

Unlike in cognition, audition and somatosensation, performance between various visual tasks does not correlate. Surprisingly, even tasks that appear similar, like visual acuity and line bisection task do not share much common variance. Similar results were ...

The visual representation of the world is often assumed to be retinotopic, and many visual brain areas are indeed organized retinotopically. Visual perception, however, is not based on a reference frame anchored in retinotopic coordinates. For example, whe ...

Under normal viewing conditions, due to the motion of objects and to eye movements, the retinotopic representation of the environment constantly changes. Yet we perceive the world as stable, and we easily keep track of moving objects. Here, we investigated ...

In (perceptual) learning, performance improves with practice either by changes in sensitivity or decision criterion. Often, changes in sensitivity are regarded as the appropriate measure of learning while changes in criterion are considered unavoidable nui ...

Schizophrenia patients are known to have deficits in contextual vision. However, results are often very mixed. In some paradigms, patients do not take the context into account and, hence, perform more veridically than healthy controls. In other paradigms, ...

In perceptual learning, stimuli are usually assumed to be presented to a constant retinal location during training. However, due to tremor, drift, and microsaccades of the eyes, the same stimulus covers different retinal positions on sequential trials. Bec ...

In crowding, the perception of a target is impeded by surrounding clutter. While traditional models are feedforward and local, there is increasing behavioral and neural evidence for a critical role of recurrent processing across the visual hierarchy in cro ...

A variety of aftereffects was found to be processed non-retinotopically. Other studies failed to find non-retinotopic aftereffects. These experiments relied on paradigms involving eye movements. We have developed a paradigm, based on the Ternus–Pikler displ ...

Tachistoscopes allow brief visual stimulation delivery, which is crucial for experiments in which subliminal presentation is required. Up to now, tachistoscopes have had shortcomings with respect to timing accuracy, reliability, and flexibility of use. Her ...

In crowding, neighboring elements impair the perception of a peripherally presented target. Crowding is often regarded to be a consequence of spatial pooling of information that leads to the perception of textural wholes. We studied the effects of stimulus ...

Pre-stimulus alpha (α) activity can influence perception of shortly presented, low-contrast stimuli. The underlying mechanisms are often thought to affect perception exactly at the time of presentation. In addition, it is suggested that α cycles determine ...

Perception seems to be a continuous stream and, for this reason, we often implicitly assume that perception is continuous. In fact, many models of vision rely explicitly and implicitly on continuous perception. However, continuous perception is challenged ...

Visual deficits are well documented in schizophrenia, especially in backward masking. In our task a Vernier is followed by a blank inter-stimulus interval (ISI) and then a grating mask. Observers indicate the direction of the Vernier offset (left vs right) ...

Crowding is ubiquitous: When objects are surrounded by other elements, their perception may be impaired depending on factors such as the proximity of the surrounding elements and the grouping of elements and targets. Crowding research aims to identify thes ...

Objects moving in the visual scene cause retinal displacements that are not the result of motor commands and thus cannot be accounted for by efference copies. Yet, we easily keep track of moving objects even without following them with our gaze. Here, we i ...
