The paper proposes a study of the phenomenology driving the ageing mechanisms of electrochemical double layer supercapacitors (SCs) during their most common operating conditions. In particular, the paper focuses on the so-called life endurance (LE) and pow ...

In this paper, we consider an active distribution network (ADN) that performs primary voltage control using real-time demand response via a broadcast low-rate communication signal. The ADN also owns distributed electrical energy storage. We show that it is ...

The dynamics of power system blackouts and the associated Self-Organized Criticality (SOC) behavior is a subject that receives continuous attention in view of its inherent complexity and relevant consequences. Within this context, the paper focuses on the ...

The Smart Transformer, a solid-state transformer with control and communication functionalities, can be the ideal solution for integrating storage into the grid. By leveraging the knowledge of the grid state of distribution grids thanks to smart meters and ...

Supercapacitors-based storage systems are expected to play a key role in microgrids in view of their capability to compensate high-power imbalances. We define an agent for the control of supercapacitor arrays within the context of the novel control framewo ...

This paper focuses on the description of the behavior of supercapacitors during over-temperature and over-voltage stresses and the consequent ageing processes. Specific physical evidences supporting the explanation of the experimental findings are provided ...

The recent literature discusses the use of the relaxed Second Order Cone Programming (SOCP) for formulating Optimal Power Flow problems (OPF) for radial power grids. However, if the shunt parameters of the lines that compose the power grid are considered, ...

As known, nonlinear loads in power systems originate harmonic distortion and power quality issues. Converter-interfaced loads exhibit a nonlinear behaviour as well and may largely contribute to increase the harmonic pollution. The nonlinearities introduced ...

We present an alternative method based on the time-reversal process to locate faults in transmission line networks. The proposed procedure considers different media for the forward and the backward propagation phases. Specifically, the transverse branch re ...

Key operational and protection functions of power systems (e.g., optimal power flow scheduling and control, state estimation (SE), protection, and fault location) rely on the availability of models to represent the system's behavior under different operati ...

This paper focuses on the prediction of temperature profiles on the surface of Lithium-ion cells. In particular, the paper proposes the adoption of the impulse response technique to predict cell surface temperatures consequent to generic discharge conditio ...

In this paper we present a procedure for the optimal siting and sizing of Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) owned, and directly controlled by network operators of Active Distribution Networks (ADNs). The peculiarity of the proposed planning procedure consists ...

This paper presents a systematic approach for abstracting the flexibility of a building space heating system and using it within a composable framework for real-time explicit power control of microgrids and, more in general, active distribution networks. I ...

This study explores the practical viability of repurposing aging Kaplan turbines into variable-speed propellers by employing full-size frequency converters. The motivation behind this approach is to improve the provision of Frequency Containment Reserve (F ...

The eective deployment of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in Distribution Networks (DNs) requires an enhancement in terms of estimation accuracy beyond the limits of IEEE Std C37.118.1 (IEEE Std), aiming at a Total Vector Error (TVE) in the order of 0.0x% ...

The paper presents a set of experimental investigations related to the study of the dynamic behavior of supercapacitors. The experimentally-inferred results are then used as inputs for an improved version of one of the most common supercapacitor RC-circuit ...

Dispersed storage systems (DSSs) can represent an important near-term solution for supporting the operation and control of active distribution networks (ADNs). Indeed, they have the capability to support ADNs by providing ancillary services in addition to ...

In this paper, the design and experimental validation of a prototype phasor measurement unit (PMU) that simultaneously meets the P and M class requirements of the IEC/IEEE Std 60255-118-1-2018 are presented. The device is based on a synchrophasor estimatio ...

By using the electromagnetic time reversal (EMTR) theory, the paper studies its properties in order to derive a new fault location method to be used in power networks. It is shown that, in the reversed-time stage, the current signal observed at the true fa ...

In electrical distribution system measurements, noise arises from both sensor-related distortions and grid disturbances. Accurate noise extraction is crucial for identifying and mitigating its impact on sensitive equipment. While existing studies primarily ...
