The present study is focusing on the elaboration of the quantitative relationships between the primary microstructural parameters (i.e. the phase volume fractions Phi, the particle and pore sizes and the corresponding size distributions PSD) with the more complex topological features (triple phase boundary length TPBL, and specific surface area SSA) in porous Ni-cermet anodes. These relationships are crucial for the microstructure optimization and for the improvement of the corresponding electrode performan

Transition element dopants (e.g., Y, La) are commonly used as sintering aids in polycrystalline alumina ceramics, which segregate to the grain boundaries and control the grain-boundary mobility. However, due to the extremely thin (

The performance of materials for electrochemical energy conversion and storage depends upon the number of electrocatalytic sites available for reaction and their accessibility by the transport of reactants and products. For solid oxide fuel/electrolysis ce ...

A hydrothermal processing route was used to produce anisotropic submicrometer particles of potassium niobate-tantalates and pure potassium niobate. Piezoelectric activity, switching polarization, and piezoelectric hysteresis loops were observed in these ferroelectric perovskite nanorods by means of AFM assisted detection of induced piezoelectric vibrations. Both lattice and domain wall contributions to the piezoelectric response were evidenced.

By means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) the structure of chemically ordered regions in Zr-doped Pb(Mg1/3Ta2/3)O-3 has been studied. Large coherent ordered domains were obtained by the addition of 5 mol% PbZrO3. The results obtained by conventional, analytical, and high-resolution TEM are consistent with the random-site description of the B-site order, the so-called random-layer model. Image simulations showed that a careful selection of the imaging conditions for high resolution transmission elec

This paper presents a method developed to quantify three-dimensional energy dispersive spectrometry (3D EDS) data with voxel size smaller than the volume from which X-rays are emitted. The influence of the neighboring voxels is corrected by applying recurs ...

Piezoelectric thin films have existing and promising new applications in microwave filter technologies. The final performance depends on many parameters, and very specifically on the materials properties of each involved material. In this article, material ...

Site-controlled InGaAsN quantum wires (QWRs) emitting at 1.3 lm at room temperature were grown on V-grooved GaAs substrates by modulated-flux metallorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The nonplanar substrate template is shown to enhance the nitrogen uptake, evidenced by a redshift in photoluminescence wavelength twice larger for the QWRs than for the adjacent quantum well regions. The mechanism of this increase in nitrogen incorporation efficiency, achieved without degradation in optical properties, is explained b

One of the major limitations of the nickel (Ni) - yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) anode support for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) is its low capability to withstand transients between reducing and oxidizing atmospheres ("RedOx" cycle), owing to the Ni-to- ...

We have analyzed the influence of the two different Ti doping methods on the superconducting properties of bronze processed (Nb,Ta,Ti)3Sn multifilamentary wires with identical configuration, consisting of a Nb7.5wt.%Ta alloy processed to 14641 filaments of ...

Small amounts of anion impurities (e.g. Cl), which are incorporated during the synthesis of ceramic powders, can affect the properties and microstructure of the final sintered ceramic. The effect of anion impurities is a little studied and poorly understoo ...

Strontium migration from the oxygen electrode to the interface between the electrolyte and interlayer was investigated in solid oxide cells in fuel cell (SOFC) and electrolysis (SOEC) modes. Four samples were imaged by focused ion beam scanning electron mi ...

Germanium based clathrate-I compounds are considered for their potential applications due to possible thermoelectric and optoelectronic properties. Clathrate compounds may be an alternative to well known thermoelectric materials at higher temperature. In this contribution we examined the stability of these compounds annealed in air. Such experiments are important to simulate the compounds behavior under the conditions of a technological process, e.g. in a thermoelectric module.

The microstructure of ferroelectric Cd1−xZnxTe (CZT) thin films with x ≈ 0.04 grown by molecular beam epitaxy has been studied by means of cross sectional high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM). High- density {1 1 1} lamellar twins are fou ...

The activities of a series of MoS2-based hydrogen evolution catalysts were studied by biphasic reactions monitored by UV/Vis spectroscopy. Carbon supported MoS2 catalysts performed best due to an abundance of catalytic edge sites and strong electronic coup ...

Semiconductors with complex anisotropic morphologies in solar to chemical energy conversion devices enhance light absorption and overcome limiting charge transport in the solid. However, structuring the solid-liquid interface has also implications on conce ...
