Mathematical modeling of human physiopathology is a tremendously ambitious task. It encompasses the modeling of most diverse compartments such as the cardiovascular, respiratory, skeletal and nervous systems, as well as the mechanical and biochemical interaction between blood flow and arterial walls, or electrocardiac processes and the electric conduction into biological tissues. Mathematical models can be set up to simulate both vasculogenesis (the aggregation and organisation of endothelial cells disperse

Mechano-electric feedbacks (MEFs), which model how mechanical stimuli are transduced into electrical signals, have received sparse investigation by considering electromechanical simulations in simplified scenarios. In this paper, we study the effects of di ...

Background and objectives: Parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification are crucial in computa-tional cardiology, as they enable the construction of digital twins that faithfully replicate the behavior of physical patients. Many model parameters reg ...

We introduce universal solution manifold network (USM-Net), a novel surrogate model, based on artificial neural networks (ANNs), which applies to differential problems whose solution depends on physical and geometrical parameters. We employ a mesh-less arc ...

The accurate prediction of transmural stresses in arterial walls requires on the one hand robust and efficient numerical schemes for the solution of boundary value problems including fluid-structure interactions and on the other hand the use of a material ...

Cardiac in silico numerical simulations are based on mathematical models describing the physical processes involved in the heart function. In this review paper, we critically survey biophysically-detailed mathematical models describing the subcellular mech ...

Stroke, a major global health concern often rooted in cardiac dynamics, demands precise risk evaluation for targeted intervention. Current risk models, like the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepa ...

This paper deals with the mathematical model that describes the function of the human heart. More specifically, it addresses the equations that express the electromechanical process, that is the mechanical deformation (contraction and relaxation) of the he ...

This paper considers numerical simulations of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems in hemodynamics for idealized geometries of healthy cerebral arteries modeled by both nonlinear isotropic and anisotropic material constitutive laws. In particular, it ...

Reducing the computational time required by high-fidelity, full-order models (FOMs) for the solution of problems in cardiac mechanics is crucial to allow the translation of patient-specific simulations into clinical practice. Indeed, while FOMs, such as th ...

We propose a machine learning-based method to build a system of differential equations that approximates the dynamics of 3D electromechanical models for the human heart, accounting for the dependence on a set of parameters. Specifically, our method permits ...

The development of biophysical models for clinical applications is rapidly advancing in the research community, thanks to their predictive nature and their ability to assist the interpretation of clinical data. However, high-resolution and accurate multi-p ...

Systolic Anterior Motion (SAM) of the mitral valve - often associated with Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM) - is a cardiac pathology in which a functional subaortic stenosis is induced during systole by the mitral leaflets partially obstructi ...

We propose a reduced ODE model for the mechanical activation of cardiac myofilaments, which is based on explicit spatial representation of nearest-neighbour interactions. Our model is derived from the cooperative Markov Chain model of Washio et al. (Cell M ...

We propose a data-driven Model Order Reduction (MOR) technique, based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), applicable to dynamical systems arising from Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) or time-dependent Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). Unlike ...

In this paper we present a mathematical and numerical model for human cardiac perfusion which accounts for the different length scales of the vessels in the coronary tree. Epicardial vessels are represented with fully three-dimensional (3D) fluid-dynamics, ...

We review and compare different fluid-structure interaction (FSI) numerical methods in the context of heart modeling, aiming at assessing their computational ef-ficiency for cardiac numerical simulations and selecting the most appropriate method for heart ...

In this work we address the issue of validating the monodomain equation used in combination with the Bueno-Orovio ionic model for the prediction of the activation times in cardiac electro-physiology of the left ventricle. To this aim, we consider four pati ...

Mechano-electric regulations (MER) play an important role in the maintenance of cardiac performance. Mechano-calcium and mechano-electric feedback (MCF and MEF) pathways adjust the cardiomyocyte contractile force according to mechanical perturbations and a ...

This work concerns the mathematical and numerical modeling of the heart. The aim is to enhance the understanding of the cardiac function in both physiological and pathological conditions. Along this road, a challenge arises from the multi-scale and multi-p ...
