In this work we introduce and discuss several mathematical models, based on partial differential equations, devised to study the coupled transport of macromolecules as low-density lipoproteins in the blood stream and in the arterial walls. These models are ...

We propose a mathematical and numerical model for the simulation of the heart function that couples cardiac electrophysiology, active and passive mechanics and hemodynamics, and includes reduced models for cardiac valves and the circulatory system. Our mod ...

Emerging studies address how COVID-19 infection can impact the human cardiovascular system. This relates particularly to the development of myocardial injury, acute coronary syndrome, myocarditis, arrhythmia, and heart failure. Prospective treatment approa ...

The aim of this paper is to introduce a new mathematical model that simulates myocardial blood perfusion that accounts for multiscale and multiphysics features. Our model incorporates cardiac electrophysiology, active and passive mechanics, hemodynamics, v ...

In order to simulate the cardiac function for a patient-specific geometry, the generation of the computational mesh is crucially important. In practice, the input is typically a set of unprocessed polygonal surfaces coming either from a template geometry o ...

Author summary Computer-based numerical simulations of the heart are increasingly assuming a recognized role in the context of computational medicine and cardiology. They are based on mathematical models describing the different physical phenomena occurrin ...

Numerical mathematics is the branch of mathematics that proposes, develops, analyzes and applies methods from scientific computing to several fields including analysis, linear algebra, geometry, approximation theory, functional equations, optimization and differential equations. Other disciplines, such as physics, the natural and biological sciences, engineering, and economics and the financial sciences frequently give rise to problems that need scientific computing for their solutions. As such, numerical m

We address the numerical simulation of fluid-structure interaction problems characterized by a strong added-mass effect. We propose a semi-implicit coupling scheme based on an algebraic fractional-step method. The basic idea of a semi-implicit scheme consi ...

This work dealt with the assessment of a computational tool to estimate the electrical activation in the left ventricle focusing on the latest electrically activated segment (LEAS) in patients with left bundle branch block and possible myocardial fibrosis. ...

While ventricular electromechanics is extensively studied in both physiological and pathological conditions, four-chamber heart models have only been addressed recently; most of these works however neglect atrial contraction. Indeed, as atria are character ...

Introduction Electrogram (EGM) fractionation is often associated with diseased atrial tissue; however, mechanisms for fractionation occurring above an established threshold of 0.5 mV have never been characterized. We sought to investigate during sinus rhyt ...

The computational fluid dynamics of the heart represents a challenging task both in terms of mathematical and numerical modeling; this is mainly due to the pulsatile nature of the blood flow, to its complex interaction with the valves, and, more in general, to the reciprocal action of the components responsible for the heart functioning. Even if one focuses on the study of the left ventricle, the blood flow patterns result to be significantly dependent on the mechanical contraction and relaxation of the mus

Before septation processes shape its four chambers, the embryonic heart is a straight tube that spontaneously bends and twists breaking the left-right symmetry. In particular, the heart tube is subjected to a cell remodeling inducing ventral bending and de ...

Flow simulations in pipelined channels and several kinds of parametrized configurations have a growing interest in many life sciences and industrial applications. Applications may be found in the analysis of the blood flow in specific compartments of the c ...

In this paper we propose a new, purely algebraic, Petrov-Galerkin reduced basis (RB) method to solve the parametrized Stokes equations, where parameters serve to identify the (variable) domain geometry. Our method is obtained as an algebraic least squares ...

We investigate the interaction of intracellular calcium spatio-temporal variations with the self-sustained contractions in cardiac myocytes. A consistent mathematical model is presented considering a hyperelastic description of the passive mechanical prope ...

Spectral methods, particularly in their multidomain version, have become firmly established as a mainstream tool for scientific and engineering computation. While retaining the tight integration between the theoretical and practical aspects of spectral methods that was the hallmark of their 1988 book, Canuto et al. now incorporate the many improvements in the algorithms and the theory of spectral methods that have been made since then. This second new treatment, Evolution to Complex Geometries and Applicati

The interaction between a fluid and a poroelastic structure is a complex problem that couples the Navier-Stokes equations with the Biot system. The finite element approximation of this problem is involved due to the fact that both subproblems are indefinit ...

Objectives: We are interested in the numerical simulation of the anastomotic region comprised between outflow canula of LVAD and the aorta. Segmentation, geometry reconstruction and grid generation from patient specific data remain an issue because of the variable quality of DICOM images, in particular CT-scan (e.g. metallic noise of the device, non-aortic contrast phase). We propose a general framework to overcome this problem and create suitable grids for numerical simulations. Methods: Preliminary treatm

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a pathological condition characterized by an abnormal thickening of the myocardium. When affecting the medio-basal portion of the septum, it is named Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM) because it induces a f ...
