The material and exact shape of a nanostructure determine its optical response, which is especially strong for plasmonic metals. Unfortunately, only a few plasmonic metals are available, which limits the spectral range where these strong optical effects ca ...

Hybrid metal-dielectric nanostructures have recently gained prominence because they combine strong field enhancement of plasmonic metals and the several low-loss radiation channels of dielectric resonators, which are qualities pertaining to the best of bot ...

The first part of this laboratory study deals with heterogeneous reactions of bromine- and chlorine-containing species relevant to the atmosphere with solid model alkali salt substrates. The second part of this work treats the heterogeneous interaction of acidic compounds with various mineral dust substrates. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of adsorbed water, H2O(a) and the influence of defect surface sites on the reactions. Furthermore, reaction mechanisms are proposed for the different in

Nanofabrication is key to many technological advances, especially the challenge of merging nanophotonics with electronics. Here, we investigate the fabrication process of plasmonic interdigitated gold electrodes having a very high aspect ratio (i.e. long a ...

We theoretically investigate the dependence of the different parameters of an optical biosensor for the detection of Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) based on absorption enhancement of Cytochrome c molecules near gold nanoparticles. H2O2 is a major reactive oxygen ...

Ammonia production at room temperature and atmospheric pressure is in high demand to assist in energy saving and the protection of the environment worldwide, as well as to help reduce CO2 emissions. Recently, plasmonic nanomaterials have been frequently us ...

After providing a detailed overview of nanofabrication techniques for plasmonics, we discuss in detail two different approaches for the fabrication of metallic nanostructures based on e-beam lithography. The first approach relies on a negative e-beam resis ...

The continuous measurement of uptake or release of biomarkers provides invaluable information for understanding and monitoring the metabolism of cells. In this work, a multiscattering-enhanced optical biosensor for the multiplexed, non-invasive, and contin ...

In this paper, we present the design, fabrication, and characterization of wire grid polarizers. These polarizers show high extinction ratios and high transmission with structure dimensions that are compatible with current complementary metal-oxide-semicon ...

The fabrication of highly ordered nanostructures over large areas is key for many technologies and colloidal lithography using the Langmuir Blodgett technique appears a simple and straightforward way of reaching that goal. While this technique has been wid ...

A novel third generation biosensor was developed based on one-shot adsorption of chemically-modified cytochrome c (cyt c) onto bare gold electrodes. In contrast to the classic approach which consists of attaching cyt c onto an active self-assembled monolayer (SAM) priory chemisorbed on gold, here short-chain thiol derivatives (mercaptopropionic acid, MPA) were chemically introduced on cyt c protein shell via its lysine residues enabling the very fast formation ( < 5 min) of an electroactive biological self-

The immense potential of optical metasurfaces is showcased by demonstrating several state-of-the-art applications with plasmonic metasurfaces along with experimental investigation of their polarization response using Mueller matrix spectroscopy. The work o ...

The Optical trapping of Au nanoparticles with dimensions as small as 10 nm in the gap of plasmonic dipole antennas is demonstrated. Single nanoparticle trapping events are recorded in real time by monitoring the Rayleigh scattering spectra of individual pl ...

Sub-micron lithography processes are continuously optimized for semiconductor products where the enormous market potential justifies investment in advanced methods and extremely sophisticated equipment. Due to the extreme process costs and due to the limited process versatility in terms of substrates, processing and materials, these high-end methods can not be applied for the engineering of multi-material and multifunctional nano/micro-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS/MEMS), such as polymer-based electronic

Reactive oxygen species play a key role in cell signalling and oxidative stress mechanisms, therefore, sensing their production by living organisms is of fundamental interest. Here we describe a novel biosensing method for extracellular detection of endoge ...

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by aerobic organisms are essential for physiological processes such as cell signaling, apoptosis, immune defense and oxidative stress mechanisms. Unbalanced oxidant/antioxidant budgets are involved in many diseases a ...

Determination of homocysteine (HcySH) is highly beneficial in human physiology and pathophysiology for diagnosis and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Unfortunately, the practicability of the existing methodologies for the determination of HcySH ...

Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) is an emerging patterning technology which shows the capability of fabricating nanostructures on a large scale. It is therefore interesting for low-cost NEMS manufacturing. As schematically shown, a stamp made of single crystalline silicon is pressed into a thermoplastic polymer at a temperature above its glass transition temperature TG. After the cavities of the stamp are filled with the polymer, the stamp is removed at a temperature below TG. The resulting residual layer can

The demand for tools suitable for deposition of small amount of material is continuously increasing. A standard SiN cantilever was modified in order to dispense single droplets of femto- and ato-liter (NAnoscale DISpensing (NADIS)). In order to open a nano fluid channel, holes down to 100 nm were milled in the apex of the cantilever using FIB. The liquid to dispense is loaded on the top-side of the cantilever extremity.

Efficient optical energy transfer is key to many technologies, ranging from biosensing to photovoltaics. Here, for the first time we show that by introducing a random medium with appropriate filling factor, absorption in a specific volume can be maximized. ...
