We demonstrate a method to determine the Brownian motion and the diffusion coefficient of a nanoparticle in water in a plane that is parallel to a solid boundary and as function of the distance normal to that boundary by using an optical tweezers instrumen ...

We propose a novel versatile method for the rapid and low-cost fabrication of microsphere arrays to be used as lenses of desired geometry and optical properties. Our method is based on the electrostatic self-assembly of dielectric microspheres in Parylene-C/glass well templates, with the array geometry patterned in the Parylene-C layer via standard clean room techniques. While different particle sizes and materials can be used to tune the light focusing properties of the microlenses, we demonstrate here a p

We introduce a microfluidic platform for automated on-chip worm culture, creation of synchronized embryo microarrays, and long-term parallel live imaging of Caenorhabditis elegans embryos. Our device allows studying well-defined embryo populations at unprecedented spatio-temporal resolution, via fully automated multi-dimensional imaging, covering six independent dimensions: the 3 spatial coordinates, development time, exposure duration/type (brightfield, fluorescent), and embryo number in the microarray. We

We describe a microfluidic device for automated culture and long-term high resolution imaging of Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes, which we specifically employed as model organisms for the analysis of neurodegenerative disease progression. In this platform, we integrated: (i) a microfluidic design tailored for the confinement of worms at the L2 larval stage in separate culture chambers by means of passive hydrodynamics; (ii) an optimized protocol for worm feeding and progeny removal at desired rate, allowin

Shearing DNA to a certain size is the first step in many medical and biological applications, especially in next-generation gene sequencing technology. In this article, we introduced a highly efficient ultrasonic DNA fragmentation method enhanced by needle ...

We describe the concept of magnetic particle-scanning for on-chip detection of biomolecules: a magnetic particle, carrying a low number of antigens (Ag's) (down to a single molecule), is transported by hydrodynamic forces and is subjected to successive sto ...

We describe a microfluidic platform for the automated culture, treatment and long-term highresolution imaging of Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes under normal physiological conditions. Our device features: (i) a microfluidic design tailored for the isolati ...

Background: While many biological studies can be performed on cell-based systems, the investigation of molecular pathways related to complex human dysfunctions - e.g. neurodegenerative diseases - often requires long-term studies in animal models. The nemat ...

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is an essential technology for DNA identification in genomic research. DNA fragmentation is a critical step for NGS and doing this on-chip is of great interest for future integrated genomic solutions. Here we demonstrate fa ...

Mitochondrial respiration is a key signature for the assessment of mitochondrial functioning and mitochondrial dysfunction is related to many diseases including metabolic syndrome and aging-associated conditions. Here, we present a microfluidic Caenorhabdi ...

We present a method for magneto-microfluidic three-dimensional focusing of magnetic microparticles from a dense plug into a single streamline with longitudinal inter-particle spacing. Plug formation on-chip is induced by a high-gradient magnetic field gene ...

In order to improve the throughput of the traditional “Two Electrode Voltage Clamp” (TEVC) measurements on Xenopus oocytes, we present here a chip-based non-invasive technique for the measurement of ion channels activity. We focus especially on the integration of the electrical measurement site into a microfluidic structure, allowing rapid exchange of various small-volume solutions.

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is a powerful model organism for addressing fundamental biological questions related to human disease and aging. Accurate control of the number of worms is a primary step for quantitative biological or bioch ...

We introduce a new and simple microfluidic sorting device based on adjustable filter structures that can be easily tuned by external pressure for a specific size-dependent C. elegans worm sorting experiment. A single device can be used for selecting and so ...

Separation of functional magnetic particles or magnetically labeled entities is a key feature for bioanalytical or biomedical applications and therefore also an important component of lab-on-a-chip devices for biological applications. We present a novel in ...

The invention concerns a method whereby at least a predefined zone (A) of the object (2) is irradiated with a laser beam (4) capable of heating said zone sufficiently, to a temperature less than the material melting point, to provoke a change in the microstructure (for example crystallisation or recrystallisation) of said zone, said zone being heated at a temperature and for a time interval not rendering the material amorphous. The invention is applicable for example to reversible actuators and grippers.
